George Michael only at no.29 on Billboard album charts

What's up with you USofA?

Back in the late 80s you just couldnt get enough of our George. The "Faith" album produced numerous chart toppers.

Then what... did he get too sophisticated for you?
Lately has he offended you?

Come on. He is one of the best songwriters of the last 20 years and his album is languishing at number 29 in it's first week?

At least you redeem yourselves with the great Morrissey at number 11 this week. But George..? I'm really surprised.

I'd be interested as to why his fortunes seem to have slipped so dramatically.

Morrisey are good. "Irish blood English heart" or however it's called is totally great. On the other hand George Michael is simply boring and he has been boring for more than a decade. I never quite understood all the George Michael mania over here. I liked the singles from older but when I bought that album I couldn't stand it (I gave it away). Now I don't even like the singles from this one

Patience is way too slow and somber for America. Plus, "Amazing" hasn't really taken off here yet. And let's be honest, Patience is a decent album, but it's not as good as "Older," "Listen Without Prejudice," or even "Faith". Patience is overrated by critics.

I mean, it's decent, but anyone else could've taken eight years to make an album and come up with something just as good as this, if not better.

I haven't heard the album, but every pop star in America goes through this, for whatever reasons. Why should he be any different? With very few exceptions to the rule, there's like a 10 year window, max, where most recording artists in pop music are still within the mainstream's consciousness. The fact that his album is at #29 is nothing to sneeze at compared to where it could be languishing. He still has an audience, he still has the ability to make a good living at what he's doing.

um, i love george and all...but...maybe when he tours and does more interviews in he US he will see some sales. he doesn't seem to interested in selling things here, and good for him because he still has the same credibilty as far as i'm concerned (thankfully he's never jumped on a trend bandwagon!). in america, you need to be in the public eye for folks to remember you. not saying i agree with that but its just the way it is. if he doesn't do some massive promos, his record is just gonna sink.

Agreed, I'm a fan of GM's but I didn't really know when it was coming out over here either. Unless you were actively looking for it I doubt most people had a clue that he was even releasing a new album. Sony has done very little to market his album over here.

Still, he did Oprah the other day and I've seen his video on Vh-1 so perhaps it'll get a boost.

Well perhaps it's because it took him 8 years to make this records, and people forgot about him in the interim.

Hmmm. I think "My Mother Had a Brother" is the best song on there, and one of his best songs ever. But yeah, "Flawless" is very weak and cheesy. And that song "Precious Box" is a waste of time too. I'm not feeling his "dance" songs on this album (although Freek is cool), but as usual, he can pen a really good ballad.

Precious Box is fucking BEAUTIFUL, that song just entrances me. I love the album and I wish George would do a show or two to promote it, I'd fly anywhere to see him. I love that George makes music for himself, he could give a fuck if people can't dance to it. "Amazing" and "Precious Box" are awesome dance songs.

No patience with:

Patience (Reprise) - why?
American Angel - nice tune, dreadful lyrics
Mother Had A Brother - snore
Through - bore

The rest, however, is superb. I hope this isn't his last album. He's too good to quit.

I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of fans bought the import already. If I were interested in buying the album, I would buy the import (which isn't very much on Amazon.com) just to hear "Shoot the Dog", banned by Sony.Con in America!

The 3 first singles "Freek", "Shoot the dog" and "Amazing" are superb - the rest of the album isn´t as good - but it´s growing on you - like most of Princes albums does!

I'm glad I bought the import -
I had no idea that Sony cut Shoot The Dog from the USA cd.

Stupid of them too. Who's the song going to offend? It's funny - and bizarre - as hell.

He's right. I emailed a friend of mine to ask her if she's had a chance to get it. I know how much she liked Older and I knew she would want this one. She had no idea that he released a new album. I actually saw a story about him on CNN a few months back that had mentioned something about George wanting to give his music away -blah, blah, blah - so I read it. This is when I heard about the new album. Outside of Oprah and People magazine giving it 4 out of 4 stars, there's been very little promotion. Also, like Supernova said #29 isn't really that bad for such little promotion. Personally, I really like it. l hope it does well for him.
pray God bless everyone. NO exceptions. pray

i really want the album, but i didnt like Amazing...it sounds kinda like bored euro pop. Oh and yes..George may turned "sophisticated" as u say, but he can at least get funky on couple cuts.

How is it that Prince can become a Jehovah and still crank it up. Well I gotta hear this album and maybe ill change my mind again. When I heard older it was like ... ugh.... come on!

Album plays and love for vinyl records.
