I love me some Maxwell. drooling Urban Hang suite is a classic. Can't wait for the new album. Didn't he push back the date for its release?

I thought the CD was pretty decent overall. Unfortunately, it seemed to decend in quality as far as production went on a couple of songs, but I liked quite a few songs on this CD. The vocals and lyrics were still top notch.
I liked "Get To Know You", "Lifetime", I LOVED "Changed", "Was My Girl" was classic Maxwell, "This Woman's Work" was great and everybody seemed to have slept on "Silently". I understand the sparseness of "Symptom Unknown" becasue it was a listen-to-the-lyrics type song, even though it could have used a couple of more instruments. I didn't care much for No One and Now/At The Party or Temporary Night. "For Lovers Only" sounded too generic for my taste, and starting a ballad out with a banjo sound is never a good idea in R&B. I guess experimentation is the key? Granted, this is not on par with his first record, but I don't think it sucked. I thought he should have stuck "Fortunate" on here somewhere. I'm sure many folks didn't know it came from a soundtrack and may have been expecting to get it from the CD.

Here we go. Every Maxwell post seems to end up with the "Now" sucks theme. There was nothing wrong with "Now" besides a running time that was much too short (around 45 minutes) Lifetime, Get TO KNow Ya, Changed and Noone are all classic Maxwell. I'll take another album as good as "Now" yesterday.

I guess for me the lead singles misled my expectations for Now. Urban Hang Suite: for a debut it was a cohesive mood setter from beginning to end. Despite being lyrically pretentious, the music on Embrya expands on grooves from Urban Hang Suite with the addition of strings, electronica. In the end, I still heard musical growth. Plus with the tours for each album, he was putting on a hell of a show. With Now, I expected him to incorporate those elements of the live show into the next album but all I heard was rehash. Get To Know Ya was okay..a spinoff of Sumthin' Sumthin'. When I heard Lifetime, my faith was restored that the album was going to kick ass. But aside from Lifetime and Changed, I just didn't hear anything as good as the previous material. It just didn't sound focused.

One more thing. He had Michael Bland as his drummer and you wouldn't know it unless you looked at the liner notes.

I swore I wasn't a Maxwell fan. Then, I looked up at my CD case, one day, and realized I had all his discs. omg

That bein' said, I loved the banjo on that slow jam, BK.

Great pipes, wonderful song ideas. A little self-indulgent at times, but a real talent.

this thread prompted me to visit Maxwell's stuff and it appears as if he's done a lot of the work himself a-la-Prince. http://www.musze.com/bio.html
