new Van Hunt interview http://www.darkerthanblue...y&ref=5012
When Alicia Keys name drops, people listen. So when she said Van Hunt was one of the most incredible musicians she knew, DTB got on it. "We the people who are darker than blue?!" Van Hunt exclaims down the phone call from his base in Hot-lanta. Recognising DTB from its original context without prompt? This interview is gonna be easy. Capitol Records have made much of new artist Van Hunt. His well-publicised press quotes about legalising prostitution and growing up with a father who was a part-time pimp, have garnered as much attention as his music. His self-titled debut is a blend of soul, funk and a whole lotta rhythm has resulted in Prince comparisons and a host of jam-packed performances across the US. There has been a lot of press about you lately, and the hype machine is working overtime. Do you keep track of what is said about you? I got to admit, I read everything. Somebody told me not to, but I can't help it. So far, in all of the reviews I've read, I've only heard three bad things, so I can handle that. It doesn't keep me up at night. How are you finding the promotion schedule and dealing with the press? It's all so much fun I almost feel guilty about it. You haven't had anyone ask you crazy questions like, what kind of fruit would you be? Yes. (laughs) Some dude actually just asked me what I thought about my own record. And what did you say? I said it was hot! You're originally from Ohio. Would you break that lifestyle down for the UK? Sure. Dayton, which is where I grew up, is in the middle Ohio which is an agricultural state. Different cities in Ohio basically give you different pockets of urban life. You've got Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus - they're like mini Detroits or Chicagos - grimy, working class, factories. There isn't much to do except make some music and play basketball. Have you been to the UK before? Yeah, I was there with Rashaan Paterson in 2000. I didn't get much of a chance to see the city though. Oh, but I did see the uh . . . the Piccadilly. Ok. . . London looked like fun. . . if you have money. continues online... "Pedro offers you his protection." | |
