RATE my Aretha Franklin purchases! So today was ReeRee day in the wrekka stow. Here's what I had already (not much)
Best of Aretha Arrives (my fave) Young, Gifted & Black Sparkle *** Here are the albums I bought today: I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You Spirit in the Dark The first 12 sides This Girl's In Love With You Jazz to Soul I'd waited 4 hours to eat so I was starving & listless - my judgement sucked when it came to song overlap, I may have bought virtually the same album over & over again. But so far I like what I'm hearing So tell me - how did I do? What are the absolute essentials for Aretha? What should I buy next? Thanks for any info!

I'm from Detroit so I'm a little more than a fan of this amazing woman.
Spirit in the Dark is a must have, I'd by that next. Live at the Filmore isn't on your list but it's one of my favs at the moment (Ray Charles shows up and it just makes me giddy talking about it) Overall just keep checking out all of her stuff, she's just amazing.

Good lookin' out 4 buying the "Jazz To Soul" album, I made a post about it last year.
This album includes her obscure songs from the obscure columbia eras-->>MY FAVE PERIOD far as ReRe's music concerns. Its a complitation which includes her singing famous jazz standards(also paying tributes to Dinah Washington & Lady Day). One of the highlight in this album is her rendition of "Skylark"(You'll run out of air in yo lungs when this songs ends) and her breath-taking rendition of Lady Day's "God Bless he Child", I tell ya, I heard MANY people cover this lil' ditty but NOBODY made it justice like Aunt ReRe did. My only complain about this compilation is the absence of the hear-wrenching ballad "Try A Little Tenderness" but its waaay too cool 4 school never the less. Oh chile, you're gonna love this to pieces

Far as what should you buy next? Here:
-Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky): Quincy Jones said that this is THE BEST session he produced since his work with Dinah Washington. This album was NOT a commercial move at all! - Let Me in Your Life: A feel-good album(Which includes her Stevie's remake hit "Untill You Comeback 2 Me, Thats What I'm Gonna Do"). Donny Hathaway is one of the session musicians [This message was edited Wed May 26 9:07:39 2004 by Harlepolis]

Go and find her 4 cd box set Queen Of Soul, The Atlantic Recordings - no "ifs" "ands" or "buts" about it! Do it! This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

First of all..you bought some great selections! You can never go wrong with most Aretha records. I agree with the above two records posted. LIVE AT THE FILMORE is just an amazing live record. It was a vert significant record in that Aretha played in a venue which catered to the white/hippie crowd at the time. This show was witnessed by that crowd and she proved how her voice and music transcended cultures at the time of war and Civil Rights movement. WHAT YOU SHOULD BUY NEXT: I'm not much of a church goer but AMAZING GRACE...her live gospel album is one of my favorite albums of all time. Her version of 'Amazing Grace' bring me to tears everytime. This is a must-have regardless of what your spiritual beliefs are. LADY SOUL-This is essential to your Aretha collection. After NEVER LOVED A MAN...this one took Aretha to an even greater level of ...well...greatness! You also get the full non-edited version of "Chain Of Fools" and how could you not own the origianl album that included her heart-wrenching ballad 'Aint No Way' (in which Whitney's mama, Cissy herself hits some pretty high notes in the background) There are no filler tracks here as the whole album is just amazing. Like me you will be mesmerized and like me...you should then go all the way and by the QUEEN OF SOUL 4 disc box set. Then take a long road trip and hear it from beginning to end. I promise you...it will change your life! Happy buying! All Hail The Queen! Harlepolis said: This cd is essential in any Aretha collection and is probably her best work in my opinion. It's worth it alone for her renditions of Song For You, Until You Come Back to Me, I'm In Love and the Masquerade is Over. [This message was edited Wed May 26 12:03:16 2004 by psykosoul]
