Favorite Female Vocalists

I'm gonna copy off you, paligap! lol

I believe it was Luther Vandross that said "there's nothing like a female vocalist...she can't touch any male singer out there" and I truly understand what he means now. thumbs up!

The first four are my all-time favorite...

Aretha Franklin-no explanation needed! worshipworshipworshipworship

Twinkie Clark (of The Clark Sisters) worshipworshipworshipworship

Karen Clark Sheard (of The Clark Sisters) worshipworshipworshipworship

Caron Wheeler-so underrated it's not even funny. neutral worshipworshipworshipworship

Lauryn Hill

Roberta Flack

Tremaine Hawkins

Beyonce-when she's not hollaring

Whitney Houston-everything from The Bodyguard soundtrack and before

Mariah Carey-with her crazy ass. lol

Minnie Riperton (R.I.P. pray)

Chaka Khan

Dionne Warwick

Brandy-judging from her work on Full Moon

I know there's more, but for some reason I'm drawing a blank. confuse

Diamanda Galas

I don't think there's a more frightening person on the face of the planet than this woman - she's about as sexually inviting as an STD education film. I mean that in the most complimentary sense, of course...

Anyway, I cast my votes for:

Joni Mitchell (obvious, I know...)
Sarah Cracknell (St. Etienne)
Belinda Butcher (My Bloody Valentine)
Harriet Wheeler (Sundays)
Patty Donahue (Waitresses)
Liz Frasier
Lucinda Williams - she seems to have lost it a bit in recent years, but I will be in awe of "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" till the day I die...

Shirley Caesar
Evelyn "Champagne" King

I'm sure I'll think of more later...

well, i didn't say I'd DO her - I just said I find her voice amazing. (though she IS an amazing looking creature, and she HAS kissed me on the lips once, and apparently i survived it)

Sarah Cracknell (St. Etienne)

OOF! good call. even though they used to throw tons of reverb on her voice back in the day to hide the fact that her voice was flatter than a week-old can of shasta. lol still, her voice has that adorable kittenish quality that i can't help but adore, and her vox on "tiger bay" and "good humor" make me swoon....drool

That she has an astonishing vocal range cannot be denied: she's really an amazing talent. (I've said the following elsewhere on this site, sorry for being redundant...)

BUT - Plague Mass is the only album I own that I'm simply incapable of listening to for more than five minutes. I know this music is not intended to be pleasant or "enjoyable", and I suppose it accomplishes what the artist intended, but...I just can't take it...she makes me feel depressed and uncomfortable, and those are moods i'd just as soon avoid.

You have to tell me the story of how you met her though, and what you did to earn a kiss. She doesn't seem like she'd be the touchy-feely type...

Yeah, I felt a little chagrined putting her on my list because, well, obviously she's not blessed with the greatest set of pipes, but I do love St. Etienne and her coquettish style suites their sound just fine.

...and, naturally, I'm hopelessly in lust with her...

grammar and spelling edits galore...I'm very tired...

You bet...maybe she is my kind of woman after all. Diamanda and me under a full moon...

...and if nothing else, she's got attitude, y'know? I mean, if you were in traffic and some person pulled up next to you with Diamanda blasting on their car stereo you would know this is not a fellow to be trifled with.

one time when my college roommate was trying to give the ol' brush-off to a girl who kept following around and bugging him, she called to invite herself over to our room so we both got gothed up in our best eyeliner and black lipstick, blasted some diamanda galas and sat on our beds drawing psychotic murder fantasy drawings with red crayons as she walked into our dorm room. oh, and it was the dead of winter and we opened our window all the way so it was snowing into our dorm room. lol when she saw our little performance, i then picked up a stuffed bunny and started stabbing it repeatedly with an x-acto knife as my roommate asked her if he ordered the pizza, would she eat it if he bled on it.

and so yeah, that did the trick. never heard from ol' girl again. i'd like to think diamanda was primarily to thank, even though i'm sure the sight of us in eddie munster drag was no treat for the eyes either.

diamanda galas is awesome!! although i have most of her more tame or accesssible work with the exception of plague mass, she is overly talented & i can really appreciate her message even though it is dark. i've heard she's quite easy to get along with as i've had friends weho've seen her live & even met her nearly nine times. for those not quite accustomed to her darker material, you might try the sporting life or the singer first. better yet, malediction & prayer which is my favorite album to date.
