20 Songs That Prince should cover

http://www.splendidezine....73100.html

I found this article on one of my favourite music websites - alot of the choices are a little left field, but interesting none the less. If you like music a little ouitside the mainstream, you should check out http://www.splendidezine.com, http://www.neumu.com, http://www.peopletalktooloud.com or http://www.pitchforkmedia.com - alot of great music out there.....

"14. A spiritual, "My Redeemer Lives" -- But I'd prefer to hear Prince do a whole album of religious songs as written by himself"

Direct this guy to Tower records and plop a copy of TRC in his hand...

I still say Prince should cover "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group...he'd tear that shit up something fierce!!..

* "Frankenstein"...Edgar Winter

* "Pick Up The Pieces"...Average White Band

* "Rockit"....Herbie Hancock

I say, just stick to instrumentals as cover material..

LoL..I KNOW he didn't write it...I just meant that it has that same vibe goin' thru it that a lot of his better songs have, so it would be a natural for him to cover...sheeesh...

Stevie Wonder wrote "Tell Me Something Good" and flat out gave the song to 'em. Sound familiar?

Like I said...something tells me Prince did NOT get his funk from Rufus...lol....Now Stevie, that's another story..actually, I'd think we'd all pretty much agree that Prince got his funk from James, Sly, and George...those are the most obvious and the most direct influences...Stevie's a little further down the list...

I am personally mortified that Prince has actually released cover versions on his albums.

I used to love the fact that he is such a great musician and had so much work of his own not to have to sing anyone elses lyrics - isn't that the reason he didn't sing on "We are the world"?

1) "Tempted" by Squeeze---This bluesy pop classic deserves to be covered by SOMEBODY,so why not Prince? smile

2) "A Love Of Your Own" by Average White Band---This haunting 1976 song would benefit from Prince's falsetto.

3) "Movin" by Brass Construction---As Wellbeyond suggested,Prince should do covers of instrumental jams.This one,from 1976,is a funk classic that Prince could do MUCH damage to.

His funk is multilayered ya'all! He stole many 'sounds' from all around, as many great musicians tend to do. He gave it his own sound though.
If you listen to "Ask Rufus" you know where he first fell in love with Clare Fisher's sound.
And what should he cover? I wish there was an album with some of the live-stuff. "Just My Imagination" ya'all?
And it is nice to hear him cover the stuff that inspired him. I love to hear things like La, La, La Means I Love You. Wish he and Rick James were friends, though and not competitors. Would have loved to hear Prince do Superfreak.
