Rap Sucks! I swear...I would like to hear good music again.
Usher gets on my nerves, yet they play him so much. I hate the rap they incorporate into these songs. Can we please get back to music and creativity and away from formats? GeSmi1 Baby, Baby, Baby...what's it going 2 b?

That's because you're not hearing the good Rap. All you're being fed is that mainstream crap/ You gotta check out Madlib, MF Doom, and the entire roster of Def Jux Records. That's where you can get the good Rap. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Right now, rap sucks because all of the rap on the air is from dirty south rappers and they have absolutely nothing to talk about...Now the only one I can gives props to MAYBE is Ludacris. I cant even think of anyone else immediately. SO for now, yes, rap sucks. &

Stop right there. This is why I disagree. NWF is absolutely correct. The underground material coming from Madlib, JayLib, MF Doom et al. is much slept-on. Also, people tend to ignore the releases of Talib Kweli and the Roots when they drop. Kanye West is promising, tho his production styles are tiresome. Ghostface is an underappreciated genius. And I hear that Common's new joint is gonna be sick. See, last year I would have agreed with you. But after getting exposed to more new joints, I must disagree. Real hip-hop will not be heard on the radio. If the genre had to depend on radio-driven cuts to survive, it would have died with MC Hammer and Skee-Lo. Search the 'net, follow your instincts, and you'll discover that hip-hop still has a pulse. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

This is what you said: Right now, rap sucks because all of the rap on the air is from dirty south rappers and they have absolutely nothing to talk about . . . You can't condemn the genre on the basis of what gets on the radio. As I am sure you're aware, judging the state of hip-hop by what's on the radio can be misleading. Unless of course, you're distinguishing between rap and hip-hop. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I've had it with rap these days. I just listen to the older artists like Public Enemy, De La Soul, Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest. Now and then there is a song I like from somebody like Mos Def or Jurassic 5, but rap is pretty much dead IMO.

There is SOME good hip hop out there, you have to dig though. And of course the good stuff never gets played. Check out any Slum Village cd. Check out these cats from North Carolina by the name of Little Brother. I will do today what you won't, so tomorrow I can do what you can't.

I agree to an extent. Like others have said, there's some good rap music out there but it's not getting a lot of airplay (Neither is a lot of good music that I like). Unlike most of the record buying public I like diverse rap artists that fuse other styles of music and actually have something to talk about outside of their bank accounts.
I also agree with whomever said that formats should be done away with. I remember when you could hear Hall & Oates or Tears for Fears on the same station as The Gap Band.

Interesting...when I heard Russell Simmons speak last year, someone was complaining about hip hop and his answer was that the ghetto and the trailer park are in control of the mic right now and no one wasn't to hear what THEY have to say. He said this is what goes on in the dirty south, in the trailer parks, etc. If you want to say something, grab your mic. There's very good hip hop out there....you're not looking for it.

If it does not sell it will not be around much longer. So yes the rap that is crammed down earholes does suck. Let's stop living in a fantasy world and expect that days of Public Enemy are over. Rap is just a part of the evil corporate music world.

OutKast have made some of the best rap albums EVER in the past 5 years or so.
Aqemini, ATliens, Stankonia and yes, their latest Speakerboxxx, Love Below is dope, too, though I prefer their previous work. . [This message was edited Sat May 22 5:56:24 2004 by mrdespues]

If you simply listen to what's promoted on TV and the radio, you'll assume (rightly) that the genre is no longer viable. But the underground joints won't sell if you don't even bother to find them. Most of the better crews in hip-hop never sold well. They never got on the radio. So why would radio be an arbiter for the real hip-hop? It has never been a forum for great hip-hop. So you can assume that most of the stuff on the radio these days is corporate. The days of PE are over (well, kind of, because they still put out records). But that doesn't mean no one's putting out good stuff. Tell you what, try these sites: www.stonesthrowrecords.com or www.undergroundhiphop.com We shouldn't live in a fantasy world, but we shouldn't keep our blinders on because the good old days are gone.
