The Van Hunt album is excellent and it’s all I’ve been playing since I got it a week ago. Fave songs are ‘Seconds of Pleasure’, ‘Dust’, ‘Down Here In Hell’, ‘Precious’, and ‘Hold My Hand’. You can here Sly, Prince, and Curtis in his music, but he does add a bit of his own flavor I think. In my opinion, though, all of the new crop of male R&B artists sound alike…Anthony Hamilton, Van Hunt, etc. D’Angelo started the Prince-influence craze and now every one is trying to get in on it.

Sorry, but I think that's bullshit. It appears that way to Prince hardcore fans because so many focus in so heavily Prince's music and relate everything else accordingly. I hear so many other influences in his work that Prince isn't even on the forefront of the list. I think what D'Angelo started was a RETURN TO SOUL MUSIC. Prince is among the influences, but certainly not singular - nor in the forefront. I hear more of Smokey, Marvin, Donny Hathaway and Sly in Van Hunt than Prince. Anthony Hamilton? I don't think I can even say A.H. & Prince in the same sentence and make sense. Al Green and Anthony Hamilton, definately, but not Prince. The "new crop of male R&B singers" are doing what the record labels tell them to - singing slow songs. Whereas the throwback era of R&B singing is "in" and it does encompass Prince, it is not all Prince by any measure. Actually, this style seems to be what Prince steered away from because he didn't want to be type-casted as a "soul singer".
btw, I like Hello Goodbye, Down Here In Hell With You, Seconds Of Pleasure, Anything To Get Your Attention, and Who Will Love Me In Winter.

Only those who subscribe to the act of "surface listening" would agree to that. If people listen as intently to other artists as they do to Prince, they would hear HUGE differences. I guess all black male vocalists sound alike or are imitating Prince on Prince.org, though. rolleyes
I get sick of this BS around here. Tone deaf mofos can't tell Kem from Musique but go into epileptic convulsions if you compare Korn to Slipknot.
Van Hunt doesn't soundd like ANYBODY out right now.

Wow, I'd never heard the of the guy until this thread.

I went to the website and had a listen, and HE'S REALLY GOOD!

I think I'll be getting this one!

Will be the first time I've bought a new artist's cd in AGES.

Yay! Good music is still alive.

Can someone tell me what he plays, if anything? I get the feeling he's the guitarist at least.

.

What the hell are you talking about? The topic is Van Hunt - a very NEW artist. All of my posts have been positive about him. I even mentioned a couple of other newer artists (Kem & Musiq). Are you sure you're reading right? I simply expressed my disgust with people on here lumping all R&B singers in the same silly ass BOX. If folks would LISTEN they could HEAR a difference. How can you say ALL R&B coming out now is alike? That's just crazy.

Oh, I'm reading right....you're the one who ain't reading right lol there is no lumping of anything going on here...it's all in your imagination.

How can you say ALL R&B coming out now is alike? That's just crazy.

there's that imagination, again...if you'll scroll up, you'll see that I said no such thing. You're making ASSUMPTIONS. That is not what I said, nor is that what I meant. the ONLY PERSON on this thread who mentioned Prince is YOU. because YOU automatically assume everyone wants to compare VH to him, when that's not even the case. I dig VH for who he is, and so do most of the folks on this thread.

I simply expressed my disgust with people on here lumping all R&B singers in the same silly ass BOX.

relax, man...nobody's doing that.

If folks would LISTEN they could HEAR a difference.

you act like you're the only person here who IS LISTENING...look around you, man...okaypimpin is listening....I'm listening...Joi's listening...you're ranting and raving about people not giving VH a chance when there are tons of people here who are, yet you act like you don't see 'em lol

All of my posts have been positive about him.

EVERY thread about van hunt has been positive, you're not so unique in that regard.

1. Have you listened to Van Hunt's CD?
2. Why don't you post some thoughts/reviews/comments instead of blabbering at me? What do you think of "Down Here In Hell With You"?

Contribute to the thread. I could break your posts down and refute, but I'd rather talk about Van Hunt's music for now.

btw: "In my opinion, though, all of the new crop of male R&B artists sound alike…Anthony Hamilton, Van Hunt, etc. " is lumping all R&B singers in the same box. READ. It was said on this thread. rolleyes

No, I didn't miss anything, because that's not what you said she said.

There's a big difference between saying:

"ALL R&B coming out now is alike" and,

"all of the NEW crop of MALE R&B artists sound alike."

Not that I agree that "all" is the case either way.
