I love "Forever Changes", but I think calling Arthur Lee a genius is a pretty serious overstatement. I'd categorize him more or less as a talented and entertaining drug casualty.

My votes would be for Cole Porter, Lennon/McCartney, Frank Sinatra and Miles Davis - I think these are the names most likely to be remembered centuries from now.

people i would consider to be musical geniuses would be:
prince
miles davis
john coltrane
charlie parker
frank zappa
duke ellington
because each one of these folks were both song writers and instrumentalists, who were innovators

I guess I take things like this slightly too seriously, but it seems to me that if you start describing someone like Arthur Lee as a genius then the word loses all meaning. I have a friend who always says things like "Lou Barlow is brilliant!!!"...and he's not, y'know. He's a moderately talented indie rocker. F.A. Hayek, Kurosowa, Bernard Lewis, John Coltrane - that's genius. Arthur Lee's a talented guy who made one of the great unheard albums of all time, but a lot of people could make similar claims. Brilliance is an exclusive club - if you let Arthur in, you'll be opening the doors to a lot of "medium talent".

I agree with most of the posts... but, no one's mentioned Michael? C'mon, regardless of how fucked up his life is, you gotta admit, MJ wrote some of Pop's best songs.

So, let me add to the list, Michael Jackson. nod

I thought Michael did not really do his own writing. Mostly Quincy Jones and Rod Templeton (from Heatwave).

Exactly!! Dylan is a genius. There isn't a writer that equals him IMO! His lyrics and melodies are untouchable. I also think Carlos Santana is a guitar genius and of course Prince!

By Michael: Billie Jean, Beat It, Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', The Girl Is Mine, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Smooth Criminal, Dirty Diana, Black Or White, Who is It, Heal The World, Will You Be There, Stranger In Moscow, Earth Song, to name a few. And it's Temperton, not Templeton.
