my parents would play Al Jarreau's "After All" religiously. A beautiful melody indeed.

While skimming the 70's tribute thread I was reminded of how much music has changed over the years. Those songs were all about the melody. Dont get me wrong..groove is important too, but thers just something about a sweet melody that you can hum.I kinda miss that. touched

That was a helluva thread paligap started. I'm with you regarding melodies.

The other day Who's Zoomin' Who (Aretha Franklin) came on the radio and I was so impressed how this pro, well into her divadom, handled this tune. Faithfully establishing the melody during the first verse/bridge and using the most relaxed ad libs, ad libs that just effortlessly oozed out of her throughout the rest of the song. None of the frenetic vocal gymnastics some of the new crop of wannabe divas think they're obligated to unleash upon the listener at every opportunity. The kind of thing that leaves you wondering "What exactly IS the melody of this tune?"

Didn't Fox Mulder have a poster that said The melody is out there.?

I think the rap explosion took care of that. It was like the last spike in melody's coffin. It's like people have forgotten how to write them now. Most pop and R&B just isn't as catchy as it used to be. And what's touted as great frankly sucks (ex. Justin T.)
