I'm just wondering if anyone could recommend any funk artists for me, and the best albums to get, because I'm really not that clued up on the matter.

Thanks

Are you looking for CD's rather than vinyl? here are a few off the top of My Head:

James Brown -- ummm...wow...well, you could start off with --"James Brown - 20 All-Time Greatest Hits" and go from there...

Sly Stone - Stand, There's A Riot Goin On or Fresh! -Or, to save money, you could start with - Anthology , and see what you like...

Parliament - Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome or again, an anthology--Tear the Roof off 1974-1980

Funkadelic - Standing on the Verge, One Nation Under A Groove, Let's Take It To The Stage

Cameo- Cardiac Arrest, We All Know Who We Are, or again, start with a best of compilation--or the Anthology

Slave - Stone Jam, and Stellar Fungk -The Best Of Slave

Ohio Players- Funk on Fire anthology or if you can't do that, their greatest hits

Rick James - Street Songs, Bustin' Out of L-7

Kool and The Gang - Wild and Peaceful

Average White Band - Pickin' Up the Pieces: The Best of Average White Band (1974-1980)

Earth Wind And Fire - All n'All, That's The Way of The World

Isley Brothers - Showdown and Go For Your Guns

Fishbone -The Reality Of My Surroundings or Give A Monkey A Brain

Steve Arrington - Steve Arrington's Hall Of Fame

Mother's Finest - Live

Bar Kays -- You MUST get some album with Holy Ghost on it--I don't care if it's a compilation, or the original album, or whatever --just FIND THAT TRACK...

Mandrill-- Find something with Fencewalk on it!

Obviously, youre a Prince fan, but ,if you don't already have albums by The Time--well, The Time and What Time Is it?

I'm sure there are lots of others that i'm not thinking about at the moment ...but I hope this helps...

Thumparello

Start with James Brown, Sly and The Family Stone and Parliament/Funkadelic then work your way foreward. That's the DNA of it !

James, Sly, & Clinton

Lots of great funk acts--we talking 70's & 80's

Kool and the Gang
Isley Brothers
Commordores
Earth,Wind and Fire
The Gap Band
Rick James
Bootsy's Rubber Band
Brothers Johnson
Slave
Cameo
Brick

Way to many to list. I say start with the Masters.

you gon luuuv these....

pleasure-the album "future now" wil make you a fan 4 life...

maze-my favorite albums from them are "back 2 basics" "and "joy and pain"

ohio players- all i got 2 say about these brothas is 2 suggest u get "pain" "fire" "skin tight" and "honey"...

chic-despite what you might hear abou them bein retro disco, the bass, drums and guitar sounds of benard edwards (r.i.p.) tony thompson (r.i.p.) and nile rogers make chic a funk band so check out "ces't chic" and "risque"

lakeside-"shot of love" and "fantastic voyage" are some very funky beginnings but their even funkier live...

johnny 'guitar" watson- check out "giant" "funk beyond the call of duty" and "a real mother for
ya"

You nailed most of the standard bearers.

For more progressive funk:
Headhunters - especially Thrust

and for some funk/soul with a capital S:
Tower of Power - any album released from '70-'74 and their newest - Oakland Zone.

Btw, I used to play with Neftali (drummer on Fencewalk).
He told me that Harvey Mason gave him props for stealing the Fencewalk beat he used on Chameleon (Headhunters).

You know, sometimes threads like these can provide useful information completely unrelated to the topic at hand.

I was not aware until I read this thread that Tony Thompson of Chic had passed away! That surprises me, as I usually keep up with those things...not sure how I missed that one...

Also, have any of yall heard of Dyke and the Blazers. I hear they were bad, sort of like James Brown and His Famous Flames or The J.B.'s (either of his backing bands)
