WHO ARE THE BIGGEST 'SELL-OUTS' OF ALL TIME?

One of the worst things about being a music fan is when you are with your group or artist from the beginning or early on and then they completely sell out for mainstream success or other reasons.

Here is my list of the worst sell outs and with explanations ...

Lionel Ritchie -- Awesome funkateer/soul singer with Commodores, then turned, as someone else on these boards has said, into the black Barry Manilow (and you know that cannot be good!)

George Benson -- Lendary jazz guitar player threw it all away to become a lame pop balladeer

Kenny G -- Believe it or not, he was once with a funky-ass group known as the Jeff Lorber Fusion

Kool & the Gang -- One of the all-time greatest funk bands hired a new vocalist in J.T. Taylor and traded in the funk for becoming an AM-radio wedding band

Larry Graham -- Forged groundbreaking, legendary funk with Sly & the Family Stone and then abandoned it first in favor of Jehovah Witness rhetoric and then lounge singer balladry

Stevie Wonder -- Motown legend developed into one of the great singer/songwriter/musicians of all time, but then turned out dreck like Ebony and Ivory, I Just Called to Say I Love You and Part-Time Lover

Earth, Wind & Fire -- Wildly inventive jazz-funk-soul ensemble kicked ass for most of the 1970s, then began the beginning of the end with Boogie Wonderland, After the Love Has Gone and more drivel

Aerosmith -- Raw, electric, bluesy hard-rock quintet from the 1970s that made an unbelievable comeback in the 1980s ... but at what price? Their new blues album is OK and they have turned out some good songs, but most of their recent hits have been wimpy bullshit

This is why you really have to appreciate the artists that stay true to their roots and art. People like Prince, George Clinton, Bootsy, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Ohio Players, Allman Brothers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy or ones that were cool when they disbanded or died like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine. These people do not pretend to be what they are not and do not compromise.

Who would you add to this list and why???

Peace,
Scott

looks like u got every1.

Hmmm.

Cameo is one i guess. They ditched their raw big band funk horns escapade to turn in2 a drum machine. Although it still was somewhat funky.

I don't feel your definition of selling out. A change in musical direction to me...isn't "selling out".

The Red Hot Chili Peppers. confused

hee-hee, I just noticed that you (Hardcorejollies) mentioned them in your original post. I just haven't liked them for at least the past ten years or so. Everything sounds exactly the same to me IMO.

Elton John ~ Disney Bitch

Sting ~ Movie scores & commercials whore

MC Hammer ~ Sat AM Cartoon?

Madonna

I disagree about the ROLLING STONES...they sold START ME UP to
promote Windows and are always touring arenas behind corporate
sponsorship. Just recently, they had an exclusive DVD deal with
Best Buy. Seems like bottom line for them is...$$$, not music anymore.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I aint digging your definition of 'sellout'. Some of the artists you mention, Stevie Wonder for example, just burnt out. I don't mean that as derogatory comment. Just that all artists have their peak. Same thing happened to Sly. It happens to all artists. would you consider Prince a sellout?

METALLICA.

They cut their hair, put on make-up, and turned Alternative on their fans a few years ago with their "Load" cd which was a load of crap. They definitely did this to fit in with what was happening at the time. They were always strongly against making videos for singles from their albums in the 80's. Money talked and then came a video for their song "One". Money talked for the years following their "And Justice For All" album and they've had a sell-out pop sound ever since.

Metallica is a joke. The biggest sell-outs of all time. Period.

I truly love the Red Hot Chili Peppers but they used to be funky and sold out for a more pop oriented sound.

That's why they are losing fans.

Lionel Richie gets my vote for No. 1 Crossed over so far he can't get black!~ lol

Kool and the Gang definitely take second place.

Commordores go to No. 3 They got extremely cheesy towards the end.

The biggest sell-out ever by far is Jefferson Airplane.
When they went and changed to Starship, talk about a joke.

He's one of th ebiggest but thank god he regained his intergrity in th e end..he wanted that ppop crowd waay back before Purple rain and then later bitched about it. His 1999 is one of the biggest sell out albums ever for many reasons.
