lionel richie was tour de force while he was in commodores,
he have his distinctive (sugarfoot like) "owwww".
he is great keyboard and saxophone player.he wrote or co-wrote some of the funkiest songs ever, one of them was brickhouse.
his solo work isn't a bit as legendary as his funky work with commodores, but he realy was and is one of the greatest funk icons.

listen to his singing on funky situation or hard funk rock of look what you've done to me...

Because he turned into the Kenny G. of R&B music.

And I don't think people hate his earlier stuff, just what he's become.

Pretty much answers your own question. He's the Black Barry Manilow without the Commodores.

I think he's tied with Ronnie James Dio as the worst Lyricist ever...

That says it all, doesn't it?

I really don't dislike him...I just don't care for his solo stuff.

But I do like the pop/country songs he did with the Commodores, like "Sail On" ... and stuff. biggrin

The "Hello" video is just so corny it's funny! That doesn't help! Always makes me laugh!

Though I do like the "All night long" video, cool vibe to it! Good song too!

I love his first two solo albums, especially 'Can't Slow Down' which I consider to be one of the defining albums of the 80s and the 2-CD Deluxe Edition is fantastic.Early 80s singles like "You Are","Penny Lover","All Night Long (All Night)" and my favorite "Stuck On You" are great.("Stuck on You" is his finest moment as a solo artist, imo). But in 1986,when he released the crappy 'Dancing On The Ceiling',that's when I lost interest. The title track is one of the worst songs of all time and "Say You Say Me" is atrocious. When I heard this album for the first time,I remember thinking "Where is the Lionel Richie that used to make great songs??".I never really bought anything after that, but I did like his 1992 slow jam "Do It To Me",which was probably the last decent single he released. He just released a new CD but I wasn't impressed with the samples I heard.

co-sign on every word you said nod after Can't slow down he headed for R&B crossover and selling-out like no other artist ever did, before or after

but make no doubt: he's still a legend, just for what he acomplished before

loading "You Are" in my CD right away.... music
Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Can't slow Down was the end. I don't think he was ever "funky" but he was a good song writer up through that album. People only have so many songs in them. Some fewer than others. shrug
