Is MTV still cutting edge??

Does anyone think that MTV is still cutting edge? why or why not. I remember back in the early 90's, MTV was very cutting edge. I can remember them being the first to show the grunge movement in its infancy stages and it seemed as if you were watcng something so new and fresh in music. These days, it seems as if MTV is so dictated by demographics, Billboard charts, etc. It seems to be less about the music but more about attracting a target audience. what do you think?

MTV is about as cutting edge as Wonderbread.

Why?

1. More reality TV programming than actual music videos.
2. Caters to the tween crowd. Which means a lot of dumb, soulless empty music videos.
3. Stupidly bans videos based on puritanical policies (ex. Janet Jackson)
4. Has odd obession with P. Diddy, who they seem to view as some sort of musical visionary.
5. Plays Clay Aiken (and idiots vote for it).
6. No matter what Britney releases, it will air 24/7. And it will go to No. 1. D'ya hear me? It will
7. Considers the following to be incisive journalism:

Hey Usher!
I LOVE your new song “Burn” so much because I can really relate to it. But, I just want to know if you wrote that song for a specific person, or if you were just writing? OK, well thanks so much! Much Love!

The song wasn't for a specific person, it was for all of us who are going through it.

Well, even then, they hardly show REAL hip hop. It's the kind of shit that Bad Boy churns out at an alarming rate. There's a program on MuchMusic on Canada called "RapCity" that actually tries to correct that little injustice.

Cutting edge would mean that Mtv is musically relevant, but nowadays it's about as musically relevant as Rolling Stone. Both entities are musically irrelevant, but they've become hubs of pop culture. The music isn't what's important anymore, it's not primary, or even secondary for that matter. They're more concerned with fly by night stars with little to no longevity, or long term artistic impact.

I see this as part of a domino effect with regard to how record companies are signing performers who wouldn't have had a chance in hell of getting a recording contract 20 or more years ago because of lack of talent or skill. But this doesn't absolve the likes of Rolling Stone from breaking from the mold. Which is exactly what they were doing for at least the first half of the magazine's existence.

When Mtv went on the air in 1981 the music industry was in a sort of cyclical slump, and they blazed their own path as a video station. That doesn't mean they didn't play what was commercial, it means that they played both what was commercial, and what had little chance of becoming commercial on radio (e.g., songs by Gang of Four and Peter Gabriel) - and it took them about a year and a half to even play videos featuring Black artists'. Now both RS and Mtv are about fitting in and not rocking the boat. It's safer.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

MTV hasn't been cutting edge since the 80's. And they weren't "really" cutting edge then.

They are all about the Flop 40 now.

Established businesses and institutions can't afford to be cutting edge. They've got payrolls to meet and stockholders to answer to. That's why they have to monopolize the media because if anything of any true value leaked out they would lose money. Of course when their own artists actually put anything out worth talking about they promote the hell out of it ala Outkast.

Hip-hop and Rock as we know them are basically dead (rock has been for decades now). Hopefully, somebody can incorporate them into a new sound and roll with that. As it is, the guitar is an archaic tool, and should be laid to rest. I'm tired of promising musicians trying to walk down the same tired roads as their predecessors. Try something new for a change. lol

This thread sounds like a bunch of grumpy old men sitting on a park bench feeding the birds and bitching about the world.

Kids love dance music.

They buy the music.

Kids watch MTV around the world.

MTV plays hot dance music.

There you have it.

not when they keep playing Alicia Keys, Mario Winans, Beastie Boys, Usher, Beyonce, D-12, Lloyd Banks, Coheed-whatever, Sugar cult, Hoobastank, Jessica Simpson, Franz whoever, Lenny K, and Petey Pablo over and over.
I don't sleep well most nights and they are killing me with their insomniac theater!
Maybe a better name would be LTV for "Loop Television."
"Pedro offers you his protection."
