There really isn't a good biography out there, but this is pretty interesting...

if you took the ten best songs from this album (take your pick) and made it into a single album, you would still have an album that rivals 'Innervisions' and 'Talking Book'.

damn true! and I would even go further and say: u can randomly pick any 10 songs outta SITKOL and it probably still would be my fave...

but there's another point: in some way u have to take the length of an album into consideration when rating it. otherwise it would be real easy to turn any average album and turn it into a great "15 minute album" by just dropping the fillers and leaving 2 or 3 standout tracks...

this brings up the inevitable question...

Let's assume that,in 1976,Motown told Stevie to trim down 'SITKOL' into one album.Yeah,I know it's difficult, but what songs would you keep? These are the vinyl days,so choose five songs for each side. Here's my list...

Stevie Wonder 'Songs In The Key Of Life'---

SIDE 1---
Sir Duke
Have A Talk With God
Village Ghetto Land
As (edited version)
Summer Soft

SIDE 2---
I Wish
Knocks Me Off My Feet
I Am Singing
If It's Magic
Another Star (edited version)

It breaks my heart to have to remove stuff like "All Day Sucker","Isn't She Lovely","Ordinary Pain" etc,but even with just those ten songs that I picked, you still have an incredible album.

tough choice!! but my pick probably would look like this

LP Side 1:
Love's in Need of Love Today
Have a Talk With God
Village Ghetto Land
Knocks Me off My Feet
Joy Inside My Tears

LP Side 2
Sir Duke
I Wish
As
Another Star
If It's Magic

Bonus Single (is this cheating lol ??)
Saturn
Ebony Eyes

and let's get the rest of the songs in another album 8 months after!!!

lol great tracklist! I'm so glad that Motown allowed Stevie to release it as a massive double album with a bonus 4-song EP.

Both albums are incredible.

That said, Innervisions is the best project, WITHOUT A DOUBT. As much as I love SITKOL, it has a decent amount of filler ("Ordinary Pain", for example). Even some of the more brilliant tracks overstay their welcome, with ridiculously lengthy running times.

Not only do I feel that Innervisions is a superior album, but I also feel that Talking Book is a better album than SITKOL. I would probably rate SITKOL third, however...

Interesting analysis. That's probably my only criticism of SITKOL...a few tracks ("Black Man","Isn't She Lovely") do seem to go a little too long. But then I think, would we REALLY want these songs to be edited? Sure,"As" is a lengthy song, but it's so beautiful and amazing that I really don't mind one bit (it seems to have a never-ending chorus, lol).

Some people say this album has a few filler tracks, but I think every song fits perfectly and there isn't anything I would remove."Ordinary Pain" is one of the most interesting songs (tell me that second part isn't funky). It all flows together like one big concept album, taking you through the journey of life. It's easily the most consistent double-album that I've ever heard.Even the four "bonus" songs are great, and notably, these four songs don't sound like anything else on the album. The underrated "All Day Sucker" is the funkiest Stevie Wonder jam of all time, imo.

I never listen to SITKOL in bits and pieces...it's one of those albums that deserves to be played from beginning to end. When it's over, all you can do is scratch your head in amazement. It's the work of a true musical genuis.

I could'nt agree more nod take any so called "filler" track from SITKOL and it would still be a standout track on practically any album by any other artist!

Haha lol well this was a very spontaneus editing, I might choose different tracks if I do the same thing in 2 days or a week from now biggrin
