SEVENTIES ALBUM OF THE DAY(3/06/2002)

* Bootsy's Rubber Band-Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy Baby....Truly a FUNK masterpiece. This is good from beginning to end. This album is a clinic on how to pluck and slap that BASS from one of the masters of the instrument. "Can't Stay Away","Munchies For You Love" and "I Rather Be With You" are all stellar. But the true funk masterwork is the title track which finds Bootsy grooving with a vengeance. One of the top 10 best funk albums of the 70's!!!!!(Released in 1977).

SEVENTIES TRACKS OF THE DAY(3/06/2002)

* Issac Hayes-Don't Let Go.....One of the best disco records of the 70s as Ike shows off his versatility. Some people felt that tampering with disco messed up Hayes's career. But here he lays down a substantial funk groove on this piece with a disco backbeat to be reckoned with. This is great stuff indeed. I remember when Dick Clark debuted this song on American Bandstand. When the song came on, people went beserk. Check out the long version with that awesome bridge which features those violins and cellas in the mix. Ike is one of the most underrated and underapprciated artist of our time. I has contributed so much more to music than the Theme From Shaft(Released in 1979).

* Dionne Warwick- De'ja Vu....Beautiful.. beautiful song and a lost classic. This is from Dionne's album entitled DIONNE. This is Barry Manilow's masterwork as a producer right here. Dionne's voice is smooth as silk on this piece. Nice melody as well. Manilow penned the gorgeous lyrics as only he could. And guess who composed this beautiful music....ISSAC HAYES. He is a marvel of a talent. I arrest my case!!!!!(Released in 1979)

Have A Nice Day smile

Isaac Hayes along with David Porter wrote a lot of those great SOUL songs fro Sam & Dave and Otis Redding and others rfom Stax. In addition to his solo albums, he has a really marvelous catalog of copyrights.

Wasn't the Baretta theme "Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow" sung by a woman? I'm sure it was done by a female R&B artist!

Um. No.

Actually,I have a bunch of old 'Soul Train' videos from the 70s.On one of them,there is a female artist singing "Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow".This performance is from 1975.Don't know who recorded it first,or whose version was used on the TV show,but the song was indeed recorded by a woman.

It may have been, but I'm talking about the theme song for the tv show. Anyone can sing it on Soul Train.

Oddly enough, I was just listening to this album yesterday. Bootsy is a cut-up!

Ike is a badass. A Memphis cat that gives you straight up Hot Buttered Soul. It's hard to imagine what Soul music would be like without Isaac Hayes, his writing partner David Porter, and how the Stax record label was built.

Other great artists/bands from the 70s....

***Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods---These guys are primarily known for their 1974 smash "Billy,Don't Be A Hero".That's a great song,but check out their follow-up hit "Who Do You Think You Are".It's an even better song,imo.

***Blue Suede---Wellbeyond,I know you remember their 1974 hit "Hooked On A Feeling".It was a nice song,but wassup with that weird "ooga chucka,ooga chucka" chant at the beginning?????

***Jigsaw---Their big hit was "Sky High" from 1975.The chorus goes...."You've blown it all Sky High,by telling me a lie,we could have touched the sky,but you've blown it all Sky High".They also hit in 1976 with "Love Fire",a song that I think Duran Duran should cover:)

***The Hudson Brothers---In 1974,these guys had a minor hit with "So You Are A Star",an underrated gem that sounds influenced by Paul McCartney.Speaking of him....

***Paul McCartney and Wings---I love the songs "Jet","Silly Love Songs","Band On The Run","Let 'Em In"(reminds me sooo much of the summer of '76),"With A Little Luck",and their 1979 stab at Disco,"Goodnight Tonight".

***England Ford and Dan Coley---In September 1976,one of the biggest hits on the charts was their "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight".A gorgeous song that STILL sounds great to this day!!

***John Sebastian---His only big hit was the theme song to the TV show 'Welcome Back,Kotter'.In 1976,the song,titled "Welcome Back",made some noise on the charts.Btw,that was a hilarious show,huh??

***Ace---You remember "How Long" from 1975,dontcha? This song even got some attention on the R&B charts."How Long has this been going on??....How Long has this been going on???" (Btw,the lead singer of this song was Paul Carrack,who also sings lead on the 1981 Squeeze hit "Tempted".That is another one of my favorites,which I will discuss when we do a "That 80s' Thread"....lol).

Actually Sebastian was the leader of The Lovin' Spoonful back in the 60s. With them he had a lot of hits.

Btw,that was a hilarious show,huh??

Oh yes,I knew he sang that song too.He also did a solo album in the late 80s',with the hit "I Need You".He deserves much more success than he's had so far.He's a great singer!

Oh,I meant John Sebastian as a solo artist.I knew he was in the Lovin' Spoonful and yes,they had a lot of hits.I don't think he fared that well as a solo artist,but "Welcome Back" is a nice song.And the show is funny as hell...lol...

Saturday Night Fever might be my favorite movie of the 70's. And the soundtrack is a bonafide classic. Like I said, I will always stand in defense of disco. The genre produced some great music. And yes as I've stated before me and friends were doing some serious grooving(dancing) back in the 70's.....Here are some of my favorite disco tracks--which also happen to be some of the best disco records EVER!!!!

* The Trammps-Disco Inferno.....Here it is...out of all of the disco songs this is the greatest IMO. The energy,power,conviction and urgency of this song makes it monumental. Reggie Jackson(baseball legend) used to take batting practice before games to this tune. Lead vocalist Jimmy Ellis turns in the vocal performance of a lifetime on this track. Sorry Bee Gees, Donna Summer. I have to give the crown to these guys. Please check the long version for the time of your life. You can easily dance yourself into a frenzy on this song. Saturday Night Fever album producers put this as the last song on the soundtrack album. They save their best stuff...FOR LAST

* Heatwave-The Groove Line...A masterwork from Rod Temperton and the Fellas. I remember buying this song (on 45 vinyl) in 1978 at a Kmart store for only 97 cents. I still have the single and it stills plays well. The track is the excellent balance of great musicianship, serious grooves, great vocals,funky guitar riffs, and a chant that came to be very popular all over the world in nightclubs. It cost you absolutely nothing to ride on this train....just hope on board.... OOOOO-OOOOO!!!!!

THE album from the 70's was and forever will be..."Physical Graffiti", by, of course, Zep.

I have been listening to that since about '77 when I discovered it in my cousins basement (I was 8 years old). My cousin ended up giving it to me for my 9th birthday...and I have been a Zephead ever since. I hear "Trampled Under Foot" and I immediately think of playing pool in the basement with my friends (we played that song CONSTANTLY...all acting like we were John Bonham).

The whole album rocks though...I completely igonored the 2nd disc for a long time, and finally started getting into it sometime in high school. "Down By The Seaside" is just a killer track!

You know where John Paul Jones got the idea for the keyboard riff for "Trampled Under Foot"? STEEEVIIIEE! JPJ says he wanted to do something like Stevie's "Superstition."

Well, let's revive this old classic thread from Wellbeyond on its' 1 year anniversary. Because we are such BIG FANS OF THE 70's...right?

Seventies Album Of The Day{2/23/03)

*Earth Wind And Fire-Gratitude
- Certainly a highlight in the career of this amazing group. This is a good album for neophytes who are interested in this group. You get dynamite live playing from this group{including some classic live version of Reasons, Yearining Learning and their collaboration with Ramsey Lewis titled "Sun Goddess". Plus the studio tracks are smoking{through songs like the excellent "Celebrate" and the classic "Can't Hide Love". It's a very nice overview of The Elements during this period. CLASSIC STUFF!!!

Seventies Song Of The Day{2/23/03}

*Grover Washington Jr.-Mister Magic
- This one takes me back to the days when radio station were good{as in experimentally GOOD}. Back in the 70's you would be exposed to so many different styles of music on the radio. This song surely falls in the jazz field, but radio stations gave it many spins back in 1975. This is one of saxophonist Grover Washington Jr's finest moments.Plenty of good playing {and tight improvisational solo}from all the musicians featured here. The groove on this number is fierce and has been sampled by Soul For Real on their hit "Candy Rain" in the 90's. I remember as a little boy, my father would blast this 8-track almost non-stop when it first came out. The whole album is good.

Enjoy and have a nice day lol

Why would anyone be afraid to admit they liked Bill Withers? He was a significant artist who still today has his songs sampled, covered, used in commercials, etc.

I LOVE Bill Withers!! "Use Me" and "Who is He?" are two of my all-time favorite songs.

***On the song "Staying Alive",I always thought they were singing "The New York Times effect on man",but your lyric is probably the correct one.Likewise,on "More Than A Woman",it sounds like they're really singing "Bald headed woman"...lol...

***Steely Dan 'Aja'---The first track on this album,"Black Cow" was sampled by a rap duo a few years back and it became a big hit.I can't remember the name of the duo,but wasn't the song called "Uptown Baby(Deja Vu)" or something like that? One of the rappers was named Peter Gunz,right?

***Yes,Calhoun,the Ohio Players were nototrious for their album covers...lol...I have a few of 'em hanging on my wall!

***Back to Disco...I love 70s Disco,and I know alot of people make fun of it,but to me,Disco is the "ultimate" party music.How can ANYBODY sit still when songs like Foxy's "Get Off",GQ's "Disco Nights",Evelyn Champagne King's "Shame",and Musique's super-nasty "In The Bush" comes on? Those are straight up JAMS!!!

I dont know if your question has been answered but the Staying Alive lyric you quoted is correct. Barry Gibb talked about the song in depth and explained the signficance of that line. How it was basically the bible to a lot of New Yorkers and they lived by what was in it.

Bonus Seventies Album Of The Day{2/24/03}

*George Duke-Brazilian Love Affair
-A true great record.
This is one of George's greatest efforts. Of course these songs are in the Brazilian mode, and the musicianship on this 1979 release is just incredible. The album starts out with the title track which got a lot of airplay on R&B radio back in 79'. George's falsetto on this track is so great. He really sounds confident and delivers a great keyboard solo as well on this number. Then the allbum really kicks into high gear with "Summer Breezin" one of the many great highlights on this record. Another winner on this album is "Brazilian Sugar" . Please check the melody and chord changes on this awesome piece. Vocalist Flora Purim turns in a great performance and delivered the kind of attitude this song required. Also, Raul De Souza turns in a beautiful trombone performance on this piece as well. Everything comes together beautifully in a display of creativity and originality...DON'T MISS IT!!! Another great highlight is the smoking "Sugar Loaf Mountain" in which everyone plays their behind off. This song features Ricky Lawson on drums and Shelia Escovedo(better known as Shelia E.) on timbales. This is a great record and one of my favorite jazz recordings EVER!!! You'll be delighted with pleasure from this record.

Bonus Seventies Songs Of The Day{2/24/02}

*David Ruffin-Walk Away From Love
- A huge hit for former Temptations front man. David's gritty, yet powerful, delivery gives this song it's winning appeal. A great mid-70's soul song.

*Candi Staton-Young Hearts Run Free- A big number #1 1976 r&b hit for this singer who was mainly a gospel singer. After a few frustrating years as an r&B/disco diva she returned back to gospel.

*The Ebonys-You're The Reason Why. Out of the Philadelphia International Records factory comes this great underrated classic song. Some great singing can be found on this puppy here. Great falsetto leaps and yells as well. Superb stuff!!!

Enjoy and have a great day lol
