Anyone remember this song?

I Believe In Music
I could just sit around makin' music all day long, as long as I'm makin' my music, ain't gonna do nobody no harm, and who knows maybe I'll come up with a song, to make people want to stop all their fussin' and fightin' long enough to sing along... I believe in music, I believe in love

Nope..lol..but it made me think of that song called "I Believe In Love" or "I Believe In You" or some shit like that...the lyrics went something like "I don't believe virginity, is as common as it used to be/or Superman and Robinhood, are still alive in Hollywood/That gasoline's in short supply/It's rising cuz they're getting by/....But I believe in love...I believe in old folks....I believe in mom and dad....and I believe in you.."

I think it was some country song that hit on top 40 as well..lol..ring any bells, anyone??

Or what about that song "I Can Help"??..."If you got a problem/don't care what it is/If you need a hand, I can assure you this/I can help/I got two strong arms/I can help.../It would sure do me good, to do you good/Let me help'

???... wink

Both of those songs sound real familiar, but I just don't know. Damn, I think I'm having a 70's sensory overload!

Ok,guys,I think we listed enough of the pop/rock songs from that glorious decade. Now,let's see a list of your favorite R&B songs from the 70s.Here's my partial list...

***"Backstabbers" The O'Jays(1972)---There is a reason why I listed this song first. It's simply a classic!! The haunting intro, the paranoid lyrics, and the soulful vocals make it a definitive 70s soul classic.(Btw,Angie Stone samples this song on her new single).

***"Love Jones" by Brighter Side of Darkness (1973)---Critics dismissed them as Jackson 5 clones, but in my oponion, the Jacksons would have KILLED for a song as lovely and engaging as "Love Jones".The lines in the verses are spoken, and the chorus goes "Love Jones,I got a Love Jones,I got a Love Jones for you".

***"Rock The Boat" by The Hues Corporation (1974)---In the summer of 1974,you couldn't turn on your radio without hearing this catchy, charming song.

***"Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" by Tavares (1976)---Simply heavenly! Top-notch Disco by an underrated group.

***"Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder (1973)---Hell,I could place damn near EVERY Stevie single from the 70s on this list! His music during this period was inspired and simply incredible.

***"Lovin You" by Minnie Riperton(1975)---Her angelic vocals, the delicate melody, and the tender lyrics make this song a lover's classic!

***"You Can't Turn Me Off (In The Middle Of Turning Me On)" by High Energy (1977)--- Yeah, the title is bizarre, but this is a great track! A mildly suggestive song,it features strong vocals by High Energy.A number one song.

***"Tired of Being Alone" by Al Green(1971)---Al Green is known mostly for the singles that came after this, but this has always been my favorite Al Green tune.Rumor has it that,Teena Marie heard this song as a child, and it inspired her to become a singer.Soul music at its' best!!!!

***"Freddie's Dead" by Curtis Mayfield (1972)---The 'SuperFly' soundtrack is a MUST-HAVE 70s album!!!

***"Strawberry Letter #23" by The Brothers Johnson(1977)---When you hear this song,it just STAYS in your head. The melody is addictive! Great guitar solo by Lee Ritenour, and flawless production by Quincy Jones.

***"Baby,I Need Your Love" by Sweet Thunder (1978)---I bet many of you don't remember this track. It was a minor hit in the summer of '78,by this group that was made up of protege's of The Ohio Players.

***"Smiling Faces Sometimes" by The Undisputed Truth (1971)---In 1971,this song sounded creepy! It's one of those "don't trust anyone" warning songs, and in light of the Watergate scandal that was soon to follow, its' message was timely and potent.

***"Sideshow" by Blue Magic (1974)---How can you resist this song?? "So,let the Sideshow begin, step right on in,can't afford to pass it by,guaranteed to make you cry"

***"Be Thankful For What You Got" by William DeVaughn (1974)---Features the catchiest phrase of 1974...."Diamond in the back, sunroof top, diggin' the scene in a gangsta lean".

***"Summer Breeze" by The Isley Brothers(1974)---A remake of the 1972 Seals and Croft hit,the Isleys' version is my favorite.Killer guitar solo at the end!!

***"Until You Come Back To Me(That's What I'm Gonna Do) (1974)---My favorite Aretha song!!!! Alot of people don't know this, but this song was written by Steve Wonder, who recorded his own version in the late 60s.

***"I've Got Love On My Mind" by Natalie Cole(1977)---The best Natalie Cole single ever!! She was at the top of her game in 1977,when this song became a Top Ten smash.

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!!! I was out Friday, so I have to do my bonus 70's track of the day pick on today. Since Friday is the day I have set aside to do those.

SEVENTIES ALBUM OF THE DAY PICK (3/04/2002)

* Stevie Wonder-Fullingness First Finale.....This album is considered to be Stevie's "weakest" 70's album. Sandwiched between "Talking Book" "Innervisions" and "Songs In The Key Of Life", FFF is a true r&b gem. This great album starts off with the Gamble and Huff influenced "Smile Please". This is a great opener. Also on Side 1 of the album is "Too Shy To Say"which boasts some great lyrics from Stevie...."I want to be more than a friend, until the end of an endless end". This song has been remade several times. "Boogie On Reggae Woman" was an R&B staple back when it was released as a single. But to me the stunner on this album is "Creepin". Luther Vandross does justice to the song. But still the musical soundscape that Stevie lays down on the track is awesome, (it sounds really good on the 20-bit digitally remasterd version of this CD). Side two starts out with the anti-President Nixon number #1 Billboard smash "You Haven't Done Nothin" with background vocals by The Jackson 5. "It Ain't No Use" is another brillant emotional track with Minnie Riperton and Deniece Williams (part of his background group WONDERLOVE)supplying brillant background vocals. "Bird Of Beauty" once again another great track with a jazzy backdrop as Stevie urges one to stay away from those "white, red or yellow pills" and get off on the joys of living life itself. The album closes with the gospel climax of Please Don't Go (which boasts an outstanding vocal turn from Stevie). This album won the grammy for Album Of The Year in 1974. Could it be that this album is overlooked because TALKING BOOK, INNERVISIONS and SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE are so awesome and great that it borders on the verge of being musicial miracles???? Only God knows, but "Fullingness First Finale" is not a weak album by any strectch of the imagination. An R&B GEM!!!!!(Released in 1974)

SEVENTIES TRACK OF THE DAY (3/04/2002)

* Shaun Cassidy-Da Doo Ron Ron.....This guy was all over the place in the 70's as a teen hearthrob. This was a number #1 Billboard song. Can you justhear those little girls screamig as this play over your speaker???? Notorious B.I.G took a piece of this song and used it in one of his rhymes brillantly on his 1997 hit "Hypnotize". (Released in 1977)

* Deniece Williams-Free....This song used to sound so good coming from my AM radio in 1976. This song came from Deniece Williams' 1976 album "This Is Niecy". Produced by Maurice White from Earth Wind And Fire. Niecy sounds beautiful and confident on this piece (Released in 1976)

* America- A Horse With No Name.....Brillant acoustic guitar driven 70's track. Singing along to the chorus of this song is almost guaranteed. Nice melodic laid-back kind of tune....."LA LAAAA.LA-LA-LA-LA LA...LA-LA LA....LAAAA.LA"!!!!!

Have A Nice Day smile

More great R&B songs from the 70s....

***"Walking In Rhythm" by the Blackbyrds(1975)---Put this song on,and you'll be humming the melody all day long.

***"Getaway" by Earth Wind and Fire(1976)---One of their funkiest jams of all-time! The arrangememt is fast and fierce.

***"Stuff Like That" by Quincy Jones(1978)---"Although I felt naive,I did not want to leave, fever was in the air and all of a sudden,I didn't care,no reason why,I've got to testify..." Quincy is da man!!!

***"The World Is A Ghetto"by War (1972)---A lazy, jazzy groove that is hypnotic, this song is great!!

***"Summer" by War (1976)---"8-track playing all your favorite songs",they sing in the first verse. You can tell that this is a 70s song alright:)

***"Native New Yorker" by Odyssey(1978)---To those of you who dismiss Disco as repetitive, mindless music with no message,I present this song to you!

***"This Masquerade" by George Benson(1976)---An elagant jazz classic that features a stunning arrangement.

***"Mindblowing Decisions" by Heatwave(1978)---This song reflects contemporary romance in the carefree 70s..."Marriage or shackin',which way do we go? One of us must let the other know".

***"Use Ta Be My Girl" by The O'Jays(1978)---I saw the O'Jays in concert a few years back, and they opened their show with this classic song. One of their best!!

Btw,one song you will NOT see on my list is that absurd "Float On" song by The Floaters (1978).That is truly a low point of 70s soul. It's not really a "song" at all--just a lame hook that is frequently interrupted by silly "smooth talkin" that sounds genuinely campy and dumb.

This is one of those albums where you (most people I think) would think it's only "weak" in the context of the roll Stevie was on back then. I don't think it's "weak" on a stand alone basis really, but I do think it's the lesser of all the albums you mentioned above if I was going to rank them. But had it come from most other recording artists back then it would be considered a landmark album. Stevie's fans usually base it on the standard Stevie set for himself. And that's pretty darn high.

This is the one lame-ass song you came up with that is a classic. True it's lame in all the ways you mention, but it is a (black) frat classic cuz we'd spin off a little narcissitic rap in the middle of a slow grind. Lip synchin' at it's finest

LOL!

In my adult years I realized how silly Float On actually was. Back when I was a kid I didn't realize it. But one redeeming factor is the instrumental long version. Otherwise I can't stand it.

I'm gonna take this thread in a different direction.Let's discuss other things we love about the 70s,besides just the music. Here are a few random thoughts....

***"Taxi Driver"----This 1976 movie stars a young Robert Deniro, and it's regarded as a classic. But,NOTHING happens in this film!! Deniro plays a disturbed New York cab driver who drives a cab all day long. When I saw this film,I kept waiting for something to happen, but it never does! Yeah,he kills that young girl's pimp at the end,but the rest of the movie is a bore.

***The Pet Rock---During the Christmas shopping season of 1975,people were rushing out to buy a pet rock.Yes,a rock that came in a box, which people "adopted" as their pet!! What was all this about???

***"Looking For Mr.Goodbar"---Now,this 1976 film is excellent! Diane Keaton plays a teacher by day,but at night, she's out at all the singles bars, looking for the perfect one-night stand. The ending is tragically shocking.

***Saddest song of the 70s...."Bluer Than Blue" by Michael Johnson(1978).When I hear this song,I just get so depressed. The lyrics are just sooooo sad. This is the best "heartbreak song" of all-time.Check out these lyrics....

"After you go,I can catch up on my reading
After you go,I'll have alot more time for sleeping
When you're gone,it looks like things are gonna be alot
easier....life will be a breeze you know
I really should be glad

But,I'm Bluer Than Blue, sadder than sad
You're the only life this empty room has ever had
Life without you is gonna be Bluer Than Blue

After you go,I'll have alot more room in my closet
After you go,I'll stay out all night long if I feel like
it...and when you're gone,I can run through the house
screamin. No one will ever hear me,I really should be glad

But,I'm Bluer Than Blue, sadder than sad
You're the only life this empty room has ever had
Life without you is gonna be Bluer Than Blue

I don't have to miss no TV shows
I can start my whole life all over
Change the numbers on my telephone
But the nights will sure be colder, and I'm

Bluer Than Blue,sadder than sad
You're the only life this empty room has ever had
Life without you is gonna be Bluer Than Blue
Bluer Than Blue.....Bluer Than Blue

Damn!! I wish the girl would just come back to him....lol...no man should EVER have to be that sad!!

SEVENTIES ALBUM OF THE DAY(3/05/2002)

* Joni Mitchell-Court And Spark.....Regarded by many critics as the greatest female artist of the latter part of the 20th century, Joni here created a masterwork in 1974. This is truly one of the greatest records of the 70's. The album seems to deal with relationships(from all types of angles). There is so much beauty, sheen and charm to this record. "Help Me" was the big hit off of the album. Of course you know LIL MAN referenced this song in his 1987 song "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker". However "Free Man In Paris" is a stunner too. Just get the record if you don't have it. The music and her lyrics(she's one of the greatest songwriters EVER)can say much more than I could convey.(Released in 1974).

SEVENTIES TRACKS OF THE DAY(3/05/2002)

* Main Ingredients-(Spinning Around)I Must Be Falling In Love.....A classic R*B/Soul slow dance song right here. These dudes are doing some serious crooning on this track. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN...they don't make em like this anymore. So all the fellas, grab you a woman and take her out on the floor. It's time to get close and personal. Lolinex..may I have this dance?????

* Roy Ayers-Runnin Away.....Tell me you don't remember this 1977 classic funk/disco/jazz jam. One of the best dance/funk songs of the whole decade. Until the 90's vibraphonist Roy Ayers never really got his due. But ,in the 90's his songs were being sampled by the likes of A TRIBE CALLED QUEST and MARY J.BLIGE. I remember watching him and his group perform this song on SOUL TRAIN back in 77'. This song monopolized R*B radio back in tha day. From his 1977 album LIFELINES. Once you hear this song...you won't be able that "DIPPY..DO....RUN RUN RUN" line out of your head. I'm surprised that little line hasn't been sampled yet. (Released in 1977)

* Gloria Gaynor-Anybody Wanna Party???...This song came from one of the best disco albums of the decade(The album was called "Love Tracks"). Everybody knows about that number #1 disco smash" I Will Survive" but this song was a huge r&B smash too. This is great dance floor stuff.

* Millie Jackson-If You're Not Back In Love By Monday.....This woman was a bit of an influence on LIL KIM.In the 70's, she made those raunchy but intelligent "tellin it like it is" rap/soul records. This was one of her best songs and made the top ten on Billboard R&B singles chart in 77'. This song is from her album "Feelin Bitchy". Millie specialzed in giving the 411 on relationship. Some times she'd give advice to her girlfriends on how to keep her relationship with her men intact, or sometimes she'd get harsh with her girlfriends. She's tell them if you spent more time in the bedroom with your man than talking on the phone gossipping then that "other woman" wouldn't have your man. Either way, she's your friend and she wants you to be happy...sincerely!!!

Have A Nice Day smile

***Roy Ayers---His 1976 hit "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" is mesmerizing! A totally laid-back,intoxicating jam that just blows your mind when you hear it.

***Millie Jackson---Her albums are hilarious! Many of her songs have a spoken "rap" on them, and she really tells it like it is.On her 1977 hit "All The Way Lover",she has some very "imaginative" advice to those folks with lazy, unsatisfying lovers...lol....(Bro915,I know you know what I'm talkin' about)

HELL no...lol...I always thought the saddest song of the 70's was "Alone Again(Naturally)"...he rambles on about all these sads things in his life, and always sums each one up by saying he's once again alone...it's so defeatest and suicidal...remember the lyrics??...

"In a little while from now, if I’m not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself and visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who ever what it’s like when you’re shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church, Where people saying "My God, that’s tough, She's stood him up...No point in us remaining. We may as well go home"

As I did on my own...Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to,well who wouldn’t do, the role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down, reality came around
And without so much, as a mere touch, cut me into little pieces

Leaving me to doubt talk about God and His mercy
Well if he really does exist why did he desert me in my hour of need

I truly am indeed....Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that there are more hearts broken in the world that can’t be mended...left unattended

What do we do? What do we do?

Alone again, naturally

Now looking back over the years and whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died, never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old, my mother, God rest her soul
Couldn’t understand why the only man she had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me no words were ever spoken

And when she passed away, I cried and cried all day

Alone again, naturally

Alone again, naturally"

Now don't TELL me that ain't sad...lol...Don't TELL me that doesn't have you wanting to run and call your mamma right NOW..lol... wink

The runner up for "Saddest 70's Song" would have to be "Without You", because the guy who wrote it committed suicide shortly after the song came out...kinda makes the lyrics "I can't live....if living is without you..." a bit more haunting...

Man, talking about sad Eric Carmen's ALL BY MYSELF sounds sad. Homeboy sound like he has been without a woman FOR A WHILE. ALLLLL BYYYYY MYSSSSEELLFFFF...don't want to be ALLLLL BYYYY MYSELLLFFFF" sounds like he has a stomach ache too on that piece. Compassionate vocals though.

In my adult years I realized how silly Float On actually was. Back when I was a kid I didn't realize it. But one redeeming factor is the instrumental long version. Otherwise I can't stand it.

my favorite parts of that hideous song:

CANCER... and my name is LARRY!

*

Float with Paul, y'all!

*

Sharing yo' love with LARRY! LISTEN!

Float, float on
come'o
come'o
come'o, baby
float on, float on

*

damn, who said this part (I'm gonna botch it!):

and I love everythang and everybody
and I want a woman who loves everybody and everythang

something like that, I know I fucked it up. I love hearing that song, it's fucking hilarious! mr.green

LOL! I think it was Charles, the Libra. It's amazing how these type of campy lyrics stick in your memory forever.

Trivia Time!!!!

* What was the name of the 70's show that Cheryl Lynn got her big break on??? Cheryl Lynn had that big late 70's classic song "Got To Be Real"

The Gong Show.

* What star from the show Starky And Hutch had a number #1 Billboard pop hit? Who was the artist and the name of the song????

David Soul "Don't Give Up On Us Baby" or something horrible like that.

* Who was the artist and name of the song who had a hit from the great 70's t.v. show "Baretta" starring Ron Blake???

Sammy Davis Jr. singing "Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow". You mean Robert Blake, by the way. The song was originally intended as an instrumental, but lyrics were eventually added to it. The music was composed by Dave Grusin.

Wasn't the Baretta theme "Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow" sung by a woman? I'm sure it was done by a female R&B artist!

Actually,I have a bunch of old 'Soul Train' videos from the 70s.On one of them, there is a female artist singing "Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow".This performance is from 1975.Don't know who recorded it first,or whose version was used on the TV show, but the song was indeed recorded by a woman.

Good Morning Everyone!!!!! Wellbeyond got 2 out of three right. Good!!! However, Supernova got all three questions right. Way to go Supernova!!! DAVIDEYE, a woman may have covered the song, but the version I'm thinking of was done by Sammy Davis Jr.. I'll have to research and see how many versions of that song exist.....
