Put some GRACE....in YO FACE!!!!

I didn't know that Pull Up To My Bumper was about anal sex.....I just thought she loved doggie-style. Didn't know she was into booty shots. Looking back, though, Im not surprised! lol

Man I love grace Jones.....she was such an oddity at the time...strong black woman (was she really?...I wondered at times, being 10 and all)...secure in her sexuality and wild as they come. She's still a club legend in the deep house community.

Wonder wassup with her now. Anybody know? Last I saw of her was in Boomerang.

Welp, the "bumper" she talks about I assume is her "bumper"...lol...and I think we all know what she's referring to by the man's "long, black limosuine"...heh..

AMEN!!...Couldn't agree more, Cod...that deep, dark skin...that handsome/pretty face...the "crew cut"-type hair...the ultra-flat chest she's pretty much show all of, save the nipples...lol...you couldn't take your eyes off her when she appeared in videos performing...visually speaking, she was like a black, female David Bowie...

Grace Jones is a legend, period....

I remember in 1982,hearing that song by Angela Bofill,"Too Tough".Do you guys remember that one? It's funky as hell, but the lyrics are sorta explicit. The chorus goes...

"He's Too Tough for me,he's from another scene
He's Too Tough for me,I want him in between"

And to make sure that we get the point, she makes it perfectly clear during the break-down,where she says...

"That's right,baby....I want you right in between me
Not too big,not too small,just right....that's right!"

(reaching for my Angela Bofill 'Best of' CD:)

THE FUNNIEST thing about this is imagining myself as a kid, running around singing this shit!!! Of course I didn't realize what it meant at the time either but I imagine the adults were like, "baby, don't sing that!"

I don't remember ever being censored from singing it, but would you want your kid (your daughter, at that) signing this or Pretty Mess @ the top of her lungs?!! LOL!
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

I love songs that have "hidden" meanings...lol...back in the late 70s,I remember going around singing the 1978 hit by Musique,"In The Bush".That's the Disco song that has the chorus...."Push push,in the bush...push push,in the bush".Since I was only 8 years old,I had no idea what they were REALLY singing about:)

Then,in the summer of 1981,I remember hearing Grace Jones' "Pull Up To The Bumper".I assumed it was about a night on the town, cruising around....lol...

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE...or shall I say 70's lovers. I hope everyone is doing o.k. The Keith Jarrett concert I attended last night was awesome. And since this is a 70's thread, I have to say that in the 70's this pianist made history by performing solo concerts comprising of nothing but improvised music. Highly recommended is his ECM debut record FACING YOU which is a classic, his famous 1975 THE KOLN CONCERT and the 1977 album SURVIVOR'S SUITE. These records are among the best jazz records of the 70's decade decade. No disrespect to Ms. Keys(I congratulate her on her Grammies) but Jarrett is the pianist of living pianists living right now.

Yes.... that Grace Jones song "Pull Up To The Bumper" was a hot song on R&B radio back in 1981. It was a huge club hit. I remember me and my cousins would leave a movie theater back in 1981 and walk down the streets pass a couple of nightclub here in Atlanta and here that song blasting from inside. Man, I remember being envious that I wasnt old enough to enter the clubs. Yes that was a hot song and so was Angela Bofill's 'TOO TOUGH". Oh my goodness!!!! THAT WAS MY JAM. Man, you talking about somebody turning parties out on the floor with that song. Yes I also remember that line...."I want him right in between....that's right". Huge dance floor hit from Angela. I also remember when me and some of my buddies got passes to get into a night club (during the high school years, we were still too young to get into clubs). Now once we got in, it was on. But the DJ played KANO's HOLLY DOLLY (ARE YOU READY). NOW... how many of you remember that huge dance hit from 1980??? That was the jam back then. TAG TEAM(from Atlanta) sampled the KANO song for their 1993 hit "WHOOP... THERE IT IS" When that song came on, it was over people.I went up to this woman who turned out to be 8 years older than me( and she was fine fellas!!!) and asked her did she want to dance. She said yes, me and her went out on the dance floor and it was over man. My other partners has them a woman on the floor too. Man it was TRULY over then. All those older adults over 25 were looking at us like we had lost our minds ...out on the dance floor dancing up something fierce with women almost 10 years older than us.

True confessions of a funkateer ya'll!!!!!

SOME GREAT SONGS FROM THE 70s THAT NOBODY MENTIONED...

***"Miracles" by Jefferson Starship(1975)--- This dreamy, intoxicating ballad is one of my favorites.Pay close attention to the album version....there is a steamy reference to oral sex!

***"Fallin'In Love" by Hamilton,Joe Frank and Reynolds (1975)---Y'all know this one....."Baby,baby,fallin' in love,I'm fallin' in love again".In the summer of '75,this was a song strictly for lovers:)

***"Vehicle" The Ides Of March (1970)--- This horn-boosted pop classic can be heard in a new car commercial that is regularly shown on TV.

***"Fly Like An Eagle" by Steve Miller Band (1976)---A cool, smooth track that even made the Top 20 on the R&B charts back in '76.It features some stunning synthesizer work, and a funky bassline.

***"Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright (1976)---Man,this song makes me think of lava lamps and velvet posters!

***"Love Is Like Oxygen" by Sweet (1978)---This is a rocking track that sounds very ELO-ish,but its a great song with a memorable guitar riff.

***"December 1963 (Oh What A Night)" by The Four Seasons (1976)---Remember this delightful number? It's about a guy who lost his virginity, and features leader Frankie Valli singing "As I recall,it ended much too soon".Hey,it takes guts to admit that in a song....lol....

***"Hold On" by Ian Gomm (1979)---I absolutely LOVE this song!! It's a cool soft rock hit that got overshadowed by the more popular Disco hits of the era,but it is gem!

***"Bad Blood" by Neil Sedaka (1975)---A duet with red-hot Elton John, this is another favorite of mine.It was notable for using the word "bitch" in the second chorus,a taboo back then.

***"Magic" by Pilot(1975)---Don't ask me why,but I bet that Wellbeyond really liked this song.A telephone company was using it for their commercials a few years back. The chorus goes...."Oh oh oh it's Magic, you know, never believe it's not so....it's Magic, you know, never believe it's not so".

***"I Like Dreamin" by Kenny Nolan (1978)--- Too beautiful for words. If there was ANY song from the 70s that should be covered, this is the one! Imagine Prince remaking this!! Lawd have mercy....

***"You Take My Breath Away" by Rex Smith (1979)---Go ahead and laugh, but y'all know I have a thing for big, slow pop ballads....lol....

***"Midnight At The Oasis"by Maria Muldaur (1973)---She wasn't much of a singer (imo),but somehow, this song works! It sounds breezy, sexy and just plain exciting.

***"Too Much Heaven" by The Bee Gees (1979)---Pure bliss! This song truly sounds heavenly.I could listen to this song all day long, with my CD player on "repeat".It's a flawless composition.

***"Angel In Your Arms" by Hot (1977)---A clever song,in which a woman pulls a fast one on her cheating boyfriend.Turns out that SHE has a lil' something on the side too.The chorus is stunning...."Don't be surprised to find, that the Angel In Your Arms this morning,is gonna be the devil in someone else's arms tonight".Ouch!!

***"Couldn't Get It Right" by Climax Blues Band(1977)---In the 70s,it was all about HOOKS....catchy,sing-along choruses that would have you humming the songs all day long. This song is a prime example.

***"Fallin" by LeBlanc and Carr (1978)---A slow, hynotic pop ballad that will be ONE of my wedding songs:)

Damn, all these great songs and I haven't got to the R&B stuff yet....lol...but I think I made a pretty strong case that the best music was recorded in the 70s.Anybody wanna challenge that opinion? I didn't think so:)

OK now its time for the.....

SEVENTIES ALBUM OF THE DAY PICK (2/28/2002)

* Spinners-Mighty Love.....One of the best soul albums of the 70's. This group from Detrot had a run of long hits in the 70's. Their debut Atlantic record "SPINNERS was a classic but this one if sheer greatness as well. The thing that made the Spinners so great is the amount of times they switch lead vocals on one song. You'd hear Bobby Smith sing lead for a line and POOF just like that you'd hear Phillpe Wynn singing then POOF you'd hear Henry Fambrough singing lead. This is a case where you have a win-win situation. A great producer/songwriter Thom Bell and 5 great vocalists all working together for one common purpose. This album starts out with "Since I've Been Gone" with features Bobby Smith singing lead compassionately. Listen to the way we sings..."I refuse to cry over things we've done to each other". Every song on this album is a winner and almost every song on this album was a R&B staple in 1974. You will regularly hear "Love Don't Love Nobody" pop up on old school r&b station now-a-days. Other winners on the album are I'm Coming Home and He Don't Love You Like I Love You"in which Phillpe Wynn sings proudly..."Social ratings don't mean nothing if you can't give good loving". But the stunner on this landmark R&B/soul album is the title track. This is R&B/soul music being ran into a head-on collision with gospel...especially at the amazing climax of the song with Rev. Phillpe Wynn on the mike testifying like a preacher....talking you to church PHILLY STYLE!!!!!(Released in 1974)

SEVENTIES TRACK OF THE DAY (2/28/2002)

* Evelyn "Champagne" King-The Show Is Over.....From the great disco/R&B debut album SMOOTH TALK, Evelyn closes out this album out in style. Now we all know that "Shame" was the big jam off this album. But this is a great album all around. The song "I Don't Know If It's Right" was a big R&B followup hit to "Shame". Also, "We're Going To A Party is a nice album track. But the song "The Show Is Over" is so beautiful..it's the last song on the album. It's the kind of
song that would sound good on your local old school R&B radio station today. Nice laid back mid-tempo jam that is soothing to this ear. Snippets of this song was sampled by ICE CUBE for his 1993 hit "YOU KNOW HOW WE DO IT". This is great stuff.(Released in 1977)

See ya back here tomorrow for Friday's 70's album and track of the day.

Have a nice day smile

Heh heh..you KNOW I did, David..lol...that was bike-riding music at the time for me..lol...

And don't forget these ditties...

***"I'm Not In Love", by 10CC(no idea what year)...that guy was in TOTAL denial..lol..."I hang your picture, up on the wall...it hides a messy stain that's lying there...so don't you ask me to give it back...you know it doesn't mean that much to me...I'm not in love...no no.."...lol..Yeah, RIGHT!..lol wink

***"Theme from 'SWAT'"...I thought, at the time at least, that it was the coolest thing on radio...lol...

***"Reminiscing", by the Little River Band(once again, blank on the year of release)...I remember riding in the car with my sister and her friends on the way to the mall to see a movie one night, and that song came on...everyone sang along to it so damn loudly..and off-key as well..lol...

***"Wham Bam Shang-A-Lang" by Silver(1976)---Its' corny title notwithstanding, this is a GREAT track!

***"Lonely Boy" by Andrew Gold(1977)---Ok,I admit, this is a strange song. The lyrics deal with a young boy who is jealous of his new baby sister. But,it's an engaging little record that I only play when NO ONE else is around:)

The song "Dancing In The Moonlight" is by King Harvest, while the song "Brandy(You're A Fine Girl)" is by Looking Glass. If I'm not mistaken,I think both songs are from 1973.

And yes,the Gordon Lightfoot song "If You Could Read My Mind" is another favorite of mine.Did you like the Disco version that appeared in the film '54'?

Do you remember a spring 1976 song called "Falling Apart At the Seams" by a gruop called Marmalade? It wasn't a gigantic hit or anything, but I love this song. The chorus is brilliant....

"Until you came,it seems like my world was Falling Apart at the seams....oh oh...all of my childhood dreams were empty and meaningless....Until we kissed, seems like the rain was turning my hopes into sand...oh oh...I was a yesterday man, until I found you"

Btw,most of these songs I'm listing can be found on Rhinos' "Have A Nice Day: Super Hits of the 70s" compilations, volumes 1 through 25.And yes,I have them all:)

Most of the geeky girls in Jr High ususally grew up to bomb-ass lookin' babes. i found that out first-hand that they grow out of it. Maybe there was music I didn't get, that happened a lot with jazz and blues: I wasn't ready for it culturally, but pop- music I found geeky back then still rings geeky today.

Way too weird!!!

Anyone remember this song?

I Believe In Music
I could just sit around makin' music all day long, as long as I'm makin' my music, ain't gonna do nobody no harm, and who knows maybe I'll come up with a song, to make people want to stop all their fussin' and fightin' long enough to sing along... I believe in music, I believe in love
