That 70's Thread

Ok, you know the routine...start slappin' up things about the 1970's that you hate to admit you loved, songs you hate to admit you owned, groups you hate to admit you followed, clothes you hate to admit you wore...or all of the above, only that you love to admit to..lol..either/or...

I'll start...ready?..here we go..

* Heatwave...LOVED this group..."Boogie Nights", "Always and Forever", "The Grooveline"...I thought they were the funkiest shit around for about 4 months or so..heh..

* Top 50 Bachelor issues of Ebony...lol...those pics cracked me up back then, and do even more now when I'm able to stumble upon an issue...guys leanin' up against their Monte Carlo with big-ass fro's, thick sideburns, and collars so wide that a wind gust would make them airborne...So fly.. wink

* ELO...I admit it, I was also a big ELO fan...lol..."Turn To Stone" was my jam for about 2 years...I thought Jeff Lynn was a musical master, and I still get a rise out of hearing "Living Thing"...when that came at the end of the movie "Boogie Nights", I thought it made the perfect ending to an almost perfect movie...lol

*"Seasons In The Sun"...lol..don't remember at all who sang this tripe, but at the time I thought it was just a beautiful song...what was I, 8 or so??...what did I know..lol...

* Who sang that one song that went "The child is black/the child is white", blah, blah, whatever whatever??...lol..."the word is black/the page is white", or some shit...help me out here...but used to like that one, too...

* Anything by Bill Withers...

*"Round In Circles", by Billy Preston...was addicted to that one as well...!!...

There's more, I'm sure...I'll get back to ya... wink

Donna Summer - hell, I fell for all that disco shit! throw on the Summer of Sam soundtrack & I'm happy!

I was so young, I missed out on the whole afros & bellbottoms deal (and don't EVEN say "they're back!" - OY!)

reading Ebony & Jet religiously

making scrapbooks out of Ebony & Jet, LOL! (I still have one for memories, the silliest shit you've ever seen)

eating Superstar popsicles (the banana/fudge ones too!), Now'A'Laters, FruitBowl punch - okay, now I'm just getting nostalgic, I loved all this stuff!

*

I'll think of more & come back... hey WB, what's wrong with Bill Withers?? I loved that guy! The beat to Use Me Up is STILL hot!

Why would anyone be afraid to admit they liked Bill Withers? He was a significant artist who still today has his songs sampled, covered, used in commercials, etc.

Finally,a thread devoted to my favorite decade! Thanks,Wellbeyond, for starting this thread.I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who is stuck in a time machine:) Anyway, here are some of my favorites fromn that era...

***'Saturday Night Fever'--- This soundtrack is a classic from beginning to end.I remember in 1978,everywhere you went, somebody was playing this. The entire Side One is a masterpiece...."Stayin Alive","How Deep Is Your Love","Night Fever","More Than A Woman","If I Can't Have You".But that's not all. There was the thunderous "Disco Inferno",the funky "Open Sesame",and several cool instrumentals (the best being "KJEE" by Mfsb).I can't imagine any CD collection without this soundtrack.

***Donna Summer--- Anybody remember her awesome 1978 "MacArthur Park" Suite? Or,her 17-minute long songs "Love To Love You Baby" and "Try Me,I Know We Can Make It"? Donna is one of my favorite artists. She defined the Disco generation, with hugely successful concept albums that kicked ass (check out her 1977 'Once Upon A Time' album).

***ELO--- Yes,Wellbeyond,I am also a fan of these guys.I get misty-eyed when I play songs like "Strange Magic","Turn To Stone" and the Disco-flavored "Shine A Little Love".

***TV shows---In the 70s,you had great shows like "Good Times","Alice","What's Happenin","Laverne and Shirley","The Brady Bunch","The Jeffersons","Three's Company".....shows that KILL anything on TV right now!

***Heatwave--- I agree with you,Wellbeyond,Heatwave was one of the best Disco bands from this era! They were fortunate to have Rod Temperton as their leader (before Quincy Jones "stole" him away...lol...).I especially like the "haunting" quality of their songs....."Boogie Nights" and "Ain't No Half Steppin" have a delightfully eerie sound that I can't explain, but you know what I mean....lol...

***Movies--- This is the decade that gave us 'Grease','Saturday Night Fever','The Exorcist','Thank God It's Friday',and a ton of blaxploitation movies ('The Mack' is the best of this genre).

***Starbuck---Anybody remember this group? They had a huge summer of '76 hit with "Moonlight Feels Right".Funny, right now I am listening to their 1977 follow-up hit "Everybody Be Dancin"smile

***Soul Train--- A typical Saturday morning consisted of waking up and watching cartoons. But,at 10:00,we turned on 'Soul Train',then 'American Bandstand' at 11:00.

***Other delights from this decade...."Makin' It" by David Naughton, the theme song from the 1979 show of the same name...ANYTHING written and produced by The Bee Gees, such as Samantha Sang's 1978 hit "Emotion" (which has been destroyed by Destiny's Child)...Earth Wind and Fire....the 1977 film 'The Goodbye Girl',which has the BEST ENDING of any film that I've ever seen....those big, heavily orchestrated soft rock hits, like "Precious and Few" by Climax and "Alone Again(Naturally)" by Gilbert O'Sullivan....Bill Withers and his stream of classics, the best being "Ain't No Sunshine"(1972) and "Lovely Day"(1977)...Natalie Coles' sexy back-to-back hits "I've Got Love On My Mind" and "Our Love"...epic TV series like 'Roots' and 'Rich Man,Poor Man'....bellbottoms and Afros (y'all should see this kindergarten pic of me,where my Afro is like 10 inches high....lol...)....I could go on and on,and I'll certainly be visiting this thread again:)

Wellbeyond...the song "Seaons In The Song" is by Terry Jacks,if I'm not mistaken. And that other song you mentioned about "black and white",I'm wondering if it's "Brother Louie" by Stories? That song was about an interracial romance.I'll have to pull out my 70s' compilations and investigate for 'ya....lol...

Wellbeyond, here's a few trivia questions for you,or anyone else who can answer them...

***In late 1975,The Ohio Players scored a huge hit with the catchy "Love Rollercoaster".There is an infamous rumor regarding the recording of this song. What was the rumor?

***In 1976,Andrea True scored a huge Disco hit with "More,More,More".What was her previous occupation?

***In 1972,1973,and 1974,Stevie Wonder won the Grammy for album of the Year (deservedly so).He didn't win for 1975 because he didn't release an album that year.Which pop star won that Grammy that year, and even made a little joke about it onstage, thanking Stevie for NOT making a new album?

DAVIDEYE ....answer to your questions...

* Answer to question #1 is there was a rumor that the woman screaming in the middle of LOVE ROLLERCOASTER was the sound of a woman being murdered.

* Answer to number #2...Andrea True's former occupation was that of a porn star.

* Answer to number #3 is Paul Simon.

The period from 1970 - 1978 was a period of intense musical creativity in r&b/soul and funk and jazz fusion. I find it depends on what side of the trax you were born. Unfortunately, a lot of the chaff floated to the top and folks tend to focus on stuff like disco and smooth jazz more. Things got real cheesy towards the end of the decade. That's about the time of Prince's arrival, but I ddin't find him worthy of deeper scrutiny until later on around '82.

Looks like Brother915 answered before I could..lol...but those would have been my guesses as well, except for Paul Simon...I knew it was a male recording artist who said that cuz I remember someone saying that back then..lol..

Hmmmmm...Ok, lemme throw out a few 70's trivia myself then..!!

* What 70's song was based on a real-life incident about a fugitive running from the law in Indiana??

* What huge hit instrumental started off as a B-side, and slowly grew to be played more than whatever the original single release was supposed to be?

* What disco act had their first 5 singles all reach #1?(and I gotta admit, I could be wrong about this..lol..it might have been their first 4 singles, or their first 6...)

I love these 70s songs:

van mccoy, the hustle
change, searching
rose royce, is it love you're after
sly and the family stone, family affair
positive force, we got the funk
emotions, best of my love
a taste of honey, boogie oogie oogie
the sugarhill gang, rappers delight

plus others but these come to mind.

***First question....I have no idea

***Second question....don't know the answer, but did you know that Donna Summer's 1977 hit "I Feel Love" was originally a B-side too? It was the B-side of her song "Can't We Just Sit Down(And Talk It Over)".Radio DJs flipped the record over, and "I Feel Love" became a Top Ten smash.

***Third question....I'm gonna take a guess.KC and The Sunshine Band?

The Bee Gees? Nah,it can't be them.Their first 5 singles came out in the 60s,when they experienced only moderate success.I'm thinkin' it's KC and The Sunshine Band,a group which scored several Number Ones in the 70s.
