The REAL "Prince" of today - Van Hunt

After giving this CD a second listen, I can safely call this brother D'Angelo ver.2.0 You hear a lot LESS of Prince's influence in his music and a lot more of Prince's influences (Sly, Smokey, Marvin, etc.). As a matter of fact, the only thing that reminded me of Prince was "Hold My Hand", which was reminiscent of early Prince. The musicianship is top notch, especially the bass and keyboards. This guy is destined for greatness if he keeps it up at this rate. Most of the vocals are a cross between Smokey Robinson and Sly. The music - Sly meets Grahm Central Station mixed with Stevie with a dash of Heatwave. I think "Dust" is probably the weakest track on the CD and its a pretty good single. There is lot of soul in this guy and he explores it in depth on this CD. He has nowhere to go but up. You can't even say Van Hunt and Andre 3000 in the same sentence. He IS what Andre would like to be. Here's a CD better than Musicology - EASILY. I wonder if Prince considers Van Hunt a threat? Wonder how long before Van Hunt gets the offer to come over to Paisley Park and "jam"? Van Hunt is the next generation of multi-instrumentalist/writer/composer/producer. He's got the skills.

Your opinion my friend but wouldn't it be nice if we could stop looking for the next Prince? Let Van Hunt, Andre 3000 and whoever else be themselves so that they can be influential in their own way the way Prince has been. And let it be known, there will NEVER be another Prince.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I posted in this way because it seems to draw a bit more attention than "Van Hunt - the lastest musical badass". If you've seen my posts in the past, you'd know that I respect each talent as individuals. Prince.orgers think in this fashion much more than the average person because some seem to think everyone is impersonating Prince. Van Hunt is most definately an individual and brings his own artistry to the table. Props to the brotha. Who wants another Prince?

Who's looking for another Prince? Who wants to limit their musical experiences to just one artist?

Van certainly has the talent...I hope the Industry allows him to grow like Prince had a chance to grow, but it's certainly a different playing field now...again, Record companies used to give artists a chance to grow and develop , and at the same time build up a loyal audience (they were looking at longevity, they weren't necessarily expecting an overnight sensation.... Nowadays, you're lucky if you get a 2 album deal and if you don't sell a certain amount of copies, you're through!....Even Stevie Wonder had to grow and develop his gifts, so, again, I hope people like Van Hunt get the opportunity in Today's climate...

I'm not understanding the buzz around this cat. I gave his album a few listens and was totally unimpressed. He's not even the next Maxwell if you ask me. Let alone Prince.

Andre 3000 is much more interesting to me than this cat. VH does have a better voice than Andre no doubt. But Andre has the sense of engery a rawness that I used to get from Prince. Van Hunt is missing this as well as the ability to craft a song and make it interesting. I'm not sold on this dude as a either a song writer or producer (from what I've heard of his work with Rashaan Pattersen). We'll see what the next couple of years brings, but I think he's just going to end up being another one of those cats you ask "whatever happened to"

Spare me. Please. I think it's great that there are new artists coming out that don't sound exactly like the last three "hot new artists." The first time I heard people hyping this guy a couple of months ago I went to Tower Records online and listened to some samples of his album and didn't like his voice or the quick snippet of music accompanying it. Needless to say, I quickly forgot about the dude. I log on tonight and see this post and go back to listen to the samples again and was reminded of what didn't like the first time around. lol

I bought this CD based on comments I've read on the Org for awhile.... and I was highly disappointed.

I found it to be for the most part fairly bland. Yes, there are some good moments, but not enough to justify the hype.

Tony Rich Project's "Resurrection" CD is far superior, IMHO.

The road is littered with "the next Prince".....Georgio, TTD, D'Angelo, Beck, Lenny Kravitz,
Van Hunt...talented cats, but THERE IS ONLY ONE.

Realize that, and you will sleep a little mo betta wit yoself!

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Lots of people didn't like Prince at first either. "For You" was not an immediate success. Van Hunt is the sh*t for soul music. Y'all betta recognize. As far as talent goes, the arrangements on that CD are impeccable, the instrumentation is great and the vocal layers are proper. I think a lot of you just don't like SOUL MUSIC. Lots of R&B haters around here. Andre 3000 is dabbling, but who re we kidding? He's MILES from this guy. Instrumentation speaks for itself. What does Andre play (besides the mpc 3000) anyway? Who has seen him play something? Van Hunt is out on tour with Angie Stone...proving himself. Like D'Angelo, Van Hunt is working one genre really well without feeling the need to blend genres like Prince, which is an unmarketable, unacceptable practice in today's music business.

I was with you until that last sentence.A true artist doesn't always care about what's acceptable or "marketable" in the music business. That's one of the qualities that make up an innovator. Going against the status quo. If an artist feels the need to blend genres in order to complete their musical expression, then by all means they should, whether people like it or not. Blending genres is not a crime, especially for artists who do it well.
I hope Van Hunt is successful, because R&B needs a wake up call.
