Look out Prince - Van Hunt is gainin' on ya! this dude is serious. get this cd people, lots lots of grooves on here and a real cool mature soul sound. not as cartoonish as old Prince but real cool.

This cat has only one album out, Prince has 2 decades of material! Let's just say Van has a LONG WAY to go. We'll be lucky to hear a second release from this dude. | |

[/color] i know, van worked with him, but rahsaan is a bit too light for me. i do like several of his songs though. he could be great if he had a bit of attitude or funk in his songs. a lot of his 2nd cd sounded like ultra classy adult soul-pop from what i remember. the 1st album is still his best IMO. |

Van is a cool brotha indeed.
When a new artist arrives on the scene, critics and whomever else tend to familiarize themselves with anyone worth paying attention to by comparing them to other artists. In the case of "soul" artists, the requisite Marvin, Curtis, James and occassional Prince are mentioned. Flattering? Yeah but an artist whose vision is solely their own is given the option to attempt to live up to a "hype" created by others. There's a big difference between influence and inspiration. Van Hunt is just the most recent in the supposed "next Prince" tribe that comes along every few years. This type of namedropping, not by Van now, lends a certain amount of credibility and attention to him. However, Van's album and works before its release, are worth accolades and are hardly attempts at the Purple Crown. I for one don't hear a single song on the album and say "that's something P would do." For some people around these parts, anything good in music since 1978 is somehow derived from Mr. Nelson since everyone wants to be him, play like him...look like...you get the...nevermind. Van was on The Tavis Smiley Show last week and of the 15 minute interview, at least 10 was spent on the subject of Prince, at the directive of Tavis. I love Tavis but I was like "damn, let the brother be himself." Its hard enough to be a black artist promoting an album that doesn't have cameos from Lil' Jon or R Kelly on it but to say that the only other person to ever perform on your show was Prince and that he'd better "bring it" was belaboring a moot point that ended what could have at least been an semi informative piece on an artist who deserves more than a dubbing of the "next" whatever.
