D'Angelo's version of "Cruisin'" wiped the floor with Smokey's. Although I love his songwriting skills, I can't stomach his annoying voice.

co-sign on both points. Smokey was the shit, but he did suffer from that "cornbread stuck in the throat" syndrome a la Alexander O' Neal when he sang. It was really exposed whenever Smokey sang ballads. And YUP D'Angelo's version of Cruisin' smokes Mr. Robinson's.

Thank you, psychosoul. clapping

Yeah, rolleyes the lyrics were altered to the point of cartoonishness, singing "you ain't never caught a rabbit, and you ain't no friend of mine" over the sanitized music for middle America.

While Thornton's original version by Leiber & Stoller was about a freeloading gigolo, "you ain't nothin but a hound dog snoopin 'round my door" sung over the music of a gritty, gutbucket juke joint swing.

Elvis' vocal stylings and technique on the song are far superiour. The sound is more explosive. It loses all meaning coming from a man, but it ROCKS cool

In your opinion.

I still say: the lyrics were altered to the point of cartoonishness, singing "you ain't never caught a rabbit, and you ain't no friend of mine" over the sanitized music for middle America.

There ain't nothin rock and roll about the sanitized version for Ward and June Cleaver.

What about "I´m Easy" by Faith No More or "Gangsters Paradise" by Coolio (okay, not exactly a cover, but close enough).

I really like those.

Besides that, two covers that I absolutely hate come to mind:

T.a.T.u.-How Soon Is Now
Scissor Sisters-Comfortably Numb
See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...

Tori Amos' "'97 Bonnie & Clyde" - if you have to ask why... nevermind.

Jimmy Buffet's "O Mexico," because he sounds drunk & stranded in some tequila bar, & sings the song as if he gives not a sheet.

Garth Brooks doing "Shameless " - you can feel him feeling it in his gut.

Duran Duran - "Watching the Detectives," just because i heart to hear Simon Le Bon's voice crackin like that. drool

For me: "Stripped" by Rammstein, the hidden track on the "Sehnsucht" album. (As a black chick who likes Rammstein, I get plenty of weird looks) I liked it way better than the original by Depeche Mode.

Who did this song before them?

My Votes:

Twist & Shout--The Beatles
All Along the Watchtower--Jimi
Nothing Compares 2U--Sinead
Got to get You Into My Life--Earth Wind & Fire
With a Little Help From My Friends--Joe Cocker

I can't believe people think MJ's version of Come Together is better. Come to think of it, Lennon was sued for stealing that song from Chuck Berry, so I think that the Beatles Come together should go on my list. Along with My Sweet Lord by George Harrison. And George Michael's version of Prince's I Want Your Sex.

My brother says Lucy in the Sky--Elton John--but I don't agree.

The Isley Brothers' version of Summer Breeze comes to mind.

I can't believe people like D'Angelo's "Cruisin". He can't sing. Roger's version of "I Heard it Through The Grapevine" sounds like a joke. It can't seriously be compared to the original. hmph!

Wow, there are soo many:

1.) Jordan Knight-- "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" (Prince)...he made this upbeat, Prince song into a ballad and pulled it off nicely.

2.) Whitney Houston-- "I Will Always Love You" (Dolly Parton)....100 times better than Dolly Parton's version...Duh, right. lol

3.) Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey-- "Endless Love" (Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross)...don't like Diana Ross, never have; she made "The Wiz" barely watchable, glad Micheal was there to make the movie enjoyable.

4.) Luther Vandross and Beyonce-- "The Closer I Get To You" (Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway)....they did a great job, only reason I bought Beyonce's album was for this song.

5.) Prince-- "Gotta A Broken Heart Again" (Prince)...I think the version on the Aladdin DVD was 10 times better than the original.

6.) Chaka Khan-- "Don't Talk To Strangers" (Prince)....like her version better, more soul-filled.

7.) Lil' Mo-- "Time After Time" (Cyndi Lauper)....for some reason I like Lil' Mo's version more; I still like the Cyndi version, but Lil' Mo puts that little extra sumpin' sumpin' in it.

8.) Christina Aguilera-- "Like A Virgin" (Madonna)....sorry, but when she came out on that VMA stage and sang that song, she buried Madonna and Britney. Screw the kiss, I go for vocal ability and Christina made the song better and the performance worth watching.

9.) Mariah Carey-- "I'll Be There" (Jackson 5)...love the original, but Mariah's version was on point, especially with those backup vocals.

10.) Meli'sa Morgan-- "Do Me, Baby" (Prince)...really, I like both versions, but I like Meli'sa just a smidgen more, just because it sounds sexier with a woman singing those lyrics.

11.) Whitney Houston-- "I Believe in You and Me" (Temptations)....just like this version better as a solo effort than the group sound.

12.) Mya, Pink, Lil' Kim, and Christina Aguilera-- "Lady Marmalade" (LaBelle)...love the original and Patti is tops, but the newer version hooked me, especially Christina's part.

I actually like Micheal's version of "Come Together" more than the Beatles'.

I still think that Prince's version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" is better than Sinead's....but, for the record, his version and Alicia Keys' version of "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" both suck. It's just such a stupid song to me. neutral

Seriously, "Nothing Compares 2 U" is the only song on The Family's album that I don't like. Sinead smoothed it out and made the hook more prominent and likeable. In Prince's version, he kept more to the original composition so I still don't like it that much. Sinead's is way better.

I know I'm at least 1 out of 14 by mention Whitney's "I Will Always love you" over Dolly's. wink Check out some of these covers, because I know most of them were never released as radio singles or videos. Most of these songs for me are just equal in comparison to the original...or just good enough to even be considered. Very few covers can top the original. Some of these songs were completely re-done from the original version, like "Gotta Broken Heart Again". I hated the album version, until Prince completely changed it on the DVD. It just sounds better as a slow jam to me, as did Jordan Knight with "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man." Sorry, Sinead's version didn't do anything for me, and the only reason I liked Prince's version better was because of Rosie Gaines. But, hey, different stokes for different folks. wink
