***DAVID BOWIE: My god, that man can sing. STILL. And he's always been five minutes ahead of everyone else. Not a lot of other people can say they've had Luther Vandross as a backup singer, written songs with John Lennon, had a top ten hit with an Iggy Pop song, and started out as a drag queen from outer space. Watching interviews with the man, I'm amazed at how positive and happy he always seems to be. I adore this guy. Innovator, pop star, consummate performer, what else???
***ANNIE LENNOX: That voice. Those eyes. Her pores ooze stage presence. That she took time off to be a mama is so beautiful to me, and that she works with homeless children without much fanfare at all is just downright inspiring. Then there's Eurythmics, the gender bending, the fact that she's a major icon of the 80s. Love her. ***JOHN WATERS: One of the funniest people alive, and certainly one of the coolest gay role models out there. His movies are always about outsiders triumphing over "normal" people, and he chooses laughter over preaching. I'll always catch his movies on opening weekend, without fail. ***JOHNNY CASH: Read his autobiography, "Cash", and tell me this is not a beautiful human being. I hope when I'm seventy years old, I'm singing along to Beck and Soundgarden songs, or whoever's considered "hip" when I'm old. A walking American landmark. ***LAURIE ANDERSON: Her records are like digging through big piles of cool tchotchkes - she's so innovative, yet at the same time so silly and at the same time so dark. True story: a few years ago, she took a job at a McDonald's restaurant near her apartment just for the experience. She held the job for six weeks, working the register, and she claimed most people didn't even recognize her. Meanwhile, she's dating Lou Reed and has albums produced by people like Brian Eno and Nile Rodgers. Amazing, funny, humble woman with a fascinating body of work. ***ANDY WARHOL: Without him, I couldn't imagine what pop culture would be like today. We owe him more than we know, and I'm not quite sure his efforts were completely intentional. He's the grandaddy of everything we know about popular culture. I know there are more...

Ya gotta love Avid Merrion. Bo'Selecta is the funniest show on TV. His David Blaine, Marilyn Manson, David Beckham, Kelly Osbourne and Michael Jackson skits are HILARIOUS. There are some short clips of the MJ one here: http://members.lycos.nl/j...vrs40.html . Oh how I wish the US would get his show. The DVD is out this Monday.

I'm not too much an admirer of celebrities. They're people, as are the rest of us. So, instead, I'll list people I think exude coolness that adds to their celebrity. OK? OK.
1. Denzel Washington. 2. Samuel L. Jackson 3. Bruce Willis 4. Sting 5. Lisa Bonet 6. Juliette Binoche 7. Kevin Spacey 8. Tony Shalhoub 9. Stanley Tucci 10. Angela Bassett *posthumous shout-out to Carey Grant.

How could I forget...
***SANDRA BERNHARD: Forget what you think you know about her, this woman is funny and wise beyond her reputation. Watch "Without You I'm Nothing" or catch one of her live shows. You'll be in stitches. She's someone who "gets" celebrity, and all the foolishness it entails, while still having fun with glamour and popular culture.
