Al GREEN or RONALD ISLEY I was just curious: Ronnie's been around since the 1950's, But Al Green seems to be on everyone short list for Great Singers; I always thought their range was very similar...any preference? I was thinking about it because they both just dropped new albums; Ronald Isley with Burt Bacharach ( "Here I Am")and Al Green's "I Can't Stop" , his first secular album in Years... I'm gonna go with Al, just because he and Willie Mitchell had that Memphis sound on lock back in the day! That's true soul to me. 
Don't get me wrong, I like Ron Isley, but really dig his stuff in the 70s, which was more funk to me. | |

in their heyday, i'd find it hard to pick one over the other... al green has always been more rooted in soul, but has also done his fair share of funky numbers... the isleys have a bit more stylistic range: soul, funk, rock, shouters, folk, hip-hop, and pretty much any other form of music that has come around since the 1950s....
as far as range goes... i'd say that once upon a time, they both had equal range... ron's high range was more polished, but that didn't hurt al at all, because of the more raw soul sound that he was going for... but then, take a song like "the pride" or "fight the power" and ron can get pretty gritty, too... now, if i'm comparing the two today... al green is making the better music... the last isley brothers album ("body kiss") was hideous... the al green album was a muthaf'kin classic... however, i think ronnie's voice has stood the test of time better... ronnie's voice today sounds exactly like it did in the 60s... it hasn't aged... he has lost none of his range, and there are still no rough edges around his falsetto... al green's voice has weathered well, but some of his higher range isn't there the way it used to be... and you can hear him struggling sometimes on some of the songs... i ain't knockin' him, though... man still has the voice of an angel... ok... i can't pick one or the other...
