I love both of these artists very much, and I hate when people do these Kate vs Tori debates. Kate is a pioneer, and she most surely inluenced Tori. I think to a certain extent, the reason a lot of Kate fans have to rag on Tori is because she's had the success that many feel Kate should have had. Well, I don't view success as being that of album sales. Both of these brilliant women have produced some of the best music I've heard in my lifetime.

Actually, I think the artists that Kate is closest to in style is her frequent collaborator, Peter Gabriel. Both take sounds from varied different ethnic styles, and mesh it into their own extremely English pop/rock.

Tori definitely learned a thing or two from Kate, but she also got a whole lot from Led Zepplin, Joni Mitchell and others. While, at first listen, you can really hear the similarities to Kate in her voice, the more you delve into her music the more you see that she is really going in a very different direction. Tori has crafted some of the most amazing, heart-wrenching songs I've ever heard.

All in all, its a disservice to both these women to compare them. They both are just truly fantastic artists. I just wish Kate put out albums as often as Tori!!!

Although I haven't listened to much Kate Bush, what I have heard hasn't FLOORED me. I didn't like Tori at first either, but she hooked me in with Boys For Pele. I worked in a record store at the time and we played it in store a lot. It was the harpsichord that did it for me. Caught A Lite Sneeze, both the song and the video were just magical.

Vina, pick up Hounds Of Love. In fact, try to find the import, since it was remastered with bonus cuts (you can usually find it pretty cheap online). You MUST hear this album!!! I know you'd love it. The import has a B-side called Under The Ivy that is one of her most beautiful songs!

They're VERY much on the same wavelength, much more so than Tori and Kate are. I do hear a bit of Gabriel's influence on Tori as well, but to a much lesser degree (and, I think, people occasionally mistake that for Kate influence).

Also, Kate's style of piano playing is DRASTICALLY different than Tori's. SInce that is such a keystone of Tori's work, I'm amazed more people don't note that.

Ummm... I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. Are you speaking purely in terms of US success? 'Cos over here in the UK Kate's album sales shit all over Tori's.

And yet another example of Kate fans ragging on Tori. You could have simply said "Kate outsells Tori by far in England,' but instead phrased it in a way that channels venomous superiority.

Everyone knows anyway that once you become successful in the U.S. (as Tori has), then you're really successful. Why else would Robbie Williams move there?

I only meant that the states being so big, a platinum album there pulls in a lot more money than a platinum album in England, right?

Fuck it Vina!! Just get her anthology! It has Japanese remasters of all her albums up untill 1990, plus bonus material. smile
It also has some killer linear notes. nod
It's only $180 bucks new. lol But I did see it on ebay for $90 bucks and it's still sealed! omg
I might even rebuy it at that price. Then I won't feel so bad about playing the set I already have. It's a true gem. If I had to go with any of her single releases I would say get The Kick Inside, Hounds of Love or The Dreaming. biggrin
