Does gothic rock equal new wave too? Also this song was 1978 and the original post asked for 80s hits.

Is the name of the group YAZOO or YAZ? Ive seen it spelled/pronounced both ways (I use Yazoo). Does anyone have a definitive answer?

i believe they were originally Yazoo and then shortened it to just Yaz.

Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, that is true. Vincent Clark and Alison Moyet's group were called Yazoo in the UK, but I think they were forced to change their name in America due to someone else maybe owning that title.

    The Stranglers - Peaches
    Blancmange - Blind Vision
Joy Division - Love will tear us apart
    New Order - Blue Monday
    Cabaret Voltaire - Sensoria
    Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Human League - Dont you want me
ABC - The Look of Love
    Duran Duran - Rio
Echo & The Bunnymen - The Cutter
    OMD - Anolas Gay

Sensoria by Cabaret Voltaire - yegads, I loved this band at one time...Crackdown was one of the first albums I bought when I got to university. I used to live in the college residence and I drove my neighbors insane playing the "2X45" and Red Mecca albums obsessively.

Enola Gay by OMD - CLASSIC, just a perfect song...

Echo and the Bunnymen - the Cutter - I saw E&tBM about half a year ago. They closed their set with the Cutter. It was amazingly intense - I wish it would have gone on for twenty minutes

It's a bit of a stretch to consider some the following bands new wave in the sense that the term is commonly considered, but I'll throw these in:

Wire - I am the Fly
Undertones - Get Over You
Ultravox - Vienna - I hate Midge Ure, absolutely f***in' hate him, but I will always love this track.
The Monks - Love in Stereo
Fun Boy Three - Our Lips Are Sealed
Madness - Grey Day
The English Beat - Save It For Later
The Jam - Going Underground
Pete Shelley - Homosapien

Gonna get obscure on ya:
Kinetic: Hilary
My Ride: Oxy
Have you Seen my Girlfriend: Oingo Boingo
AEIOU: Ebn Ozn
Just The Girl You Want: Devo
Power and the Passion: Mignight Oil
GO!: Tones On Tail
Cat People Theme: David Bowie
Cars: Gary Numan
Pretty Persusion: REM

THOSE are the songs that always remind me of real new wave - the stuff that was groundbreaking - ignoring the current trends, quirky, electronic, abstract lyrics, plastic hats and yellow jumpsuits, pink sunglasses, hair in 4 directions, capezios, (yeah, you know what I'm talking about)

But then again, there's a whole nother list of songs from local artists here in Atlanta that redefined music in 1982. I cut class to go over to an Arts Festival and saw the B52s, REM, Baby and the Pacifiers, the Georgia Satellites, RF and the Radar Angels - all sorts of wild shit that never made it to mainstream, (OR, in R.E.M.s case, really cleaned up their shit and then went mainstream).

Kinda funny to read these lists and see who was a dancer, versus who was into the new wave live music scene, versus who listened to pop versus who listened to college radio.

Nik Kershaw! hell yeah. I had his album. Shame On You kicked ass.
Romeo Void! Hell yeah again!

oh I forgot to mke my list

Joe Jakcson ( I can't remember the name) something like breaking up is hard to do
Love is a battlefield
Do you think I'm sexy Rod Stewart
Tears for Fears
Come on Eileen (hate the hell out of that song MTV played the video HOURLY)
The Romantics talking in your sleep
anything by Duran Duran, particulary hungry like a wolf
B-52, something like "I'm gonna harden my heart"
Venus was her name

Well that is all I can think of off the top of my head
To me, New wave had a driving beat that was easy to dance to, and the lyrics and music were simply and predictable... which in a dance club is not a bad thing!

I just heard the new Mobb Deep single yesterday that samples this song. The sample is slowed down a lot which makes the track sound very spooky.

Hmmm... nice thread smile

I was more into the Gap Band, Teena Marie, Rick, Michael .... and stuff by Secret Weapon "Must be the Music", Grandmaster Flash, Whodini, etc back then, but I've been collecting a lot of these songs recently that are on your lists. I see some that i've never heard of though ... nice!

The Clash and The Fixx-'One Thing leads to Another' must have been played at every party back then, lol...

what about:
Kids In America,
Yes-Owner of a lonely heart ..
Eurythmics- Here Comes the Rain, who's that girl?
Thompson Twins(?) - Lies

8. The B-52's - Strobelight

The B's performed tonight at an outdoor show across the street from my apartment, and "Strobe Light" was in the set. Definitely one of the highlights. nod

They also played two other songs mentioned in this thread: "Private Idaho" and "Rock Lobster."
