DavidEye- Pat Benatar new wave? Hmmm....I have to disagree.

Pat Benatar wasn't really New Wave, but I always considered "Love Is A Battlefield" to be a New Wave song. It's certainly a different sound than her other hits from the 80s,which were definitely more rock.

That is simply NOT true. Duran was all about the music. Corporate creation? Please! You obviously know NOTHING about Duran Duran. 5 guys who all played their instruments and wrote their parts. Creativity was most important to them. Duran formed in 78. http://www.durandurantime.../1978.html

Not only is Duran Duran "New Wave", they are "New Romantic" as well:

eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek

OH NO!!!!! HOW COULD I HAVE MISSED THIS THREAD????!!!!!

NO ONE STARTS A NEW WAVE THREAD WITHOUT ME!!!!!

sigh

Anyways, I'm gonna put an end to all these arguements:

Duran Duran is New Wave/New Romantic, at least in the 80's. Now they're Alternative Pop/Rock.

INXS began as a New Wave band in their native OZ. Don't believe me? go out and get their first few albums. They evolved into a Funk/Pop/Rock/Dance outfit in the late 80's, but they were still New Wave for all intents and purposes.

I can't believe Chrisslope said New Wave died by the time of Falco's hit single. NEW WAVE IS FOREVER, MOTHERFRUCKER!!!! BELIEVE THAT!!!!!

Anyways, off the top of my head, here's 10 New Wave songs that I love (in no particular order):

10) Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
9) Song For A Future Generation - The B-52's
8) Hang on Now - Kajagoogoo
7 It's My Life - Talk Talk
6) Just Got Lucky - JoBoxers
5) A Girl In Trouble(is a temporary thing) - Romeo Void
4) Promised You A Miracle -Simple Minds
3) Rainy Day - APB
2) Cars - Gary Numan
1) Poison Arrow - ABC

I've got so many more tunes than that, which is why I didn't put those songs in order. I'll list some more later. Including some Duran Duran too, not to worry. wink

as far as I am concerned, once you hit the mainstream you are no longer NEW WAVE. that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!! when 11 and 12 year old kids are running around junior high school paroting out the words to 'my name is rio, ' you ain't NEW WAVE anymore. you're mainstream. maybe Duran Duran was New Wave for like a minute but by the time 'hungry like the wolf' came out it was over. I MEAN REALLY, that song must have been played ten trillion times on top 40 radio stations like Z100 and WPLJ New York. These were NOT NEW WAVE staions . THEY WERE SUPER MAINSTREAM. You are not part of the NEW WAVE anymore when your record goes into the top ten and you're booked on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. YOUR MAINSTEAM POP. that doesn't mean that the music wasn't good (i have nothing against duran duran and was actually quite fond of Power Station) but they were a pop band.

Yes, Duran Duran might've been pop when they were popular, but for all intents and purposes, they're still New Wave. No matter how you look at it, they were and still are New Wave. And that goes for any other New Wave band who was popular or had hits. Because they had hits on the pop charts doesn't make them any less New Wave.

Hell, if Hip-Hop groups have hits, they're still Hip-hop even if they're mainstream. They just happen to be popular. And the same goes for any other non-pop genre.

well , maybe because i lived through it, i never considered 'New Wave' to be a genre. i considered it to be a 'movement' .like the bands who started it were saying 'stand back! get out of the way because we are coming in with a new style and a new attitude towards music. once you become the mainstream then there is a new NEW WAVE waiting to take your place . anyway , i never thought duran duran to be new wave . to me they were just another big 80's band . high on style and THE LOOK. was the music good ? sure. but not new wave.

lol yeah,it's not always easy to determine exactly what a "new wave" song is.Many songs from this period get lumped into the new wave category.I have a New Wave compilation CD that has Johnny Hates Jazz's 1988 hit "Shattered Dreams" on it!

Of course it was New Wave. Wham! themselves were New Wave too. Yeah, it was bubblegum, pre-boy band, soul/pop/rap, but it was also very much New Wave.

I'd have to agree with David Eye and Purplegypsy, Wham wasn't even on the fringe of being New Wave. They were pretty much bubblegum pop/soul, and I loved Wham back in the day. You could easily distinguish their style from Psychedelic Furs, Duran Duran, and Modern English. Wham never had a sound close to that. Here I go jumping in after saying that it doesn't matter. lol
