Though dang, this thread made me realize that my record collection was running dangerously low on Cameo, so I went to the wrecka stow today to try to remedy that, and they only had ONE measley ol' Cameo CD in the whole store. mad

Look, guys, I do know a lot about funk, but living in Australia, Cameo to my knowledge never made much of a splash here....of course I love EW&F, Sly, P-Funk, James et al, but Cameo really took me by surprise the other night. So I looked them up on All Music and you can see for yourself that they are listed as being rap/funk or something or other. Also it mentions they are Prince influenced and whether they are or not, there is definitely something Black Album-ish in the humour I saw and heard. Not saying they took anything from Prince....I copuld just draw a faint comparison from the closest reference I could find.

So, forgive this ignorant Aussie just the once....seriously hadn't heard of them!

Never rely solely on Allmusic.com for accurate info. Over the years that's something I've learned the more I go to that site. One time I even saw a Louis Jordan song credited to Prince, and if you know who Louis Jordan was you know how ridiculous that is. It's not hard to find inaccurate info on there, and Cameo sure as hell was NOT rap group.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

If I am not mistaken, wasn't there another lead singer before Larry Blackmon? That's not him on 'Shake Your Pants.'

'tis mr. blackmon. if you have a copy of the cameosis album on vinyl, go pull it out and look at the back of the album cover, read the list of band members that's printed on it.

nod

the lead vocals were shared mainly by three people:
larry blackmon, who sounds more like a "sugarfoot" clone (ohio players)
tomi jenkins, prolly their best 'pure' lead singer
wayne cooper, falsetto, who's featured on "why have i lost you"

not mentioned in past threads is cameo's 1989 release "machismo", which is, IMHO, one of the best funk horn albums/CD's of all time. check out the track "skin i'm in" with maceo and fred wesley

Wayne Cooper was a much better singer than Tomi, who was damn good.

They struggled for years as a strictly black funk act until they had their first big hit Word Up in 1984.

Actually "Word Up" came out in 1986 lol

In 1984,they were topping the R&B charts with "She's Strange".

hehe, funny thread lol

but seriously, let's cool down with the guy now, shall we? no no no!
Considering his age and the fact that Cameo didn't hit that big for quite some years now it is forgiveable. No one is born with all the funk wisdom out there and everyone of us had to learn about it at some point. And the ORG can sometimes be a good way to get information and to exchange thoughts. But hey, if reactions continue like this mrdespues will be scared 2 start a new thread ever again! ...I'm sure I would be biggrin
Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

I just know that he was just taking the p*ss right!!! If not it just sums up the sorry state of the music fan in this day & age. Someones gotta take the blame for the fact that people are unaware of bands like Cameo & their undoubted influence on Many artists, including Prince. I find it quite insulting if Im honest. They were a top cutting edge funk band for 11 + years, up until their last great album in 1988 (Machismo). Even thier last 2 albums 'In The Face Of Funk' & 'Sweet Sexy THing' have some serious funk cuts contained within.

Its a sad sad sorry state of affairs. How can you come on here & say that funk is a passion if you haven't even grasped the basics.! Man, I give up. !! mad
The Funk, the whole funk & nothin' but the funk, ya dig?!

John joined Cameo in 1995 and was with the group for 3 years. In 1998, he moved on to drum for Patti Labelle where he was seen by Larry Graham and Prince...and then...well, u know the rest of the story wink
