Songs so sad/beautiful they bring you to tears...

Not songs so horrific they cause you to weep, but songs that are so beautifully crafted or containing such moving lyrics, they make you cry...

disbelief

prince bastardized that song...ruined the meaning and overkilled his vocals.....

by complete contrast, "sometimes it snows" has been known to bring me to tears every now and then....

"jonathan" by wendy and lisa.. sigh

and....

"let her down easy" by ttd..

Perfect by Alanis... when I heard this live for the first time it just hit me. I didn't expect it to, but it did.

Winter by Tori Amos... Same thing, I heard it live and it must have been the right time...

Your Cloud by Tori Amos... When I heard this the first time on cd, it got me bawl When I heard it live, I lost it. I wanted to hear it so bad and by the encore I had given up hope of hearing the song live. She played it at the very end, last song of the evening.

Silent All These Years by Tori Amos... (again! LOL) I hadn't connected much with this song until I heard it live last August. Again, just the right time. Unexpected.

That I Would Be Good by Alanis... same thing, didn't hit me until I heard it live...

Top of the World
by Patty Griffin... I went to the show with my boyfriend who was into her. She played this rare track that not everyone had heard before... I certainly hadn't... Half way into the song I lost it. I'm thinking, I'm going to cry, why I'm I gonna cry? I don't even know this song! I'm not even a fan!!! There was soooo much emotion in her voice.

I wished I was smarter
Wished I was stronger
I wished I loved jesus
The way the my wife does

I wished it'd been easier
Instead of any longer
I wished I could've stood
Where you would've been proud
That won't happen now
That won't happen now

There's a whole lot of sinners
That ain't gonna be heard
Disppearing every day
Without so much as a word
Somehow

I'm afraid I broke the wings
Off that little songbird
And she's never gonna fly
To the top of the world How
To the top of the world

I don't have to answer
Any of these questions
Don't have no guide to
Teach me no lessons

I come home in the evening
Sit in my chair
One night they called me for supper
But I never got up
I stayed right there
In my chair

There's a whole lot of singing
That ain't gonna be heard
Disappearing every day
Without so much as a word
Somehow

I think I broke the wings
Off a little songbird
And she's never gonna fly
To the top of the world
How
To the top of the world

I wished I'd had known you
Wished I had shown you
All of the things I
Was all these are
But I'd pretend to be sleeping
When you'd come in in the morning
To whisper goodbye
Go work at the rain
I don't know why
Don't know why

Cause everyone's singing
We just wanna be heard
Disappearing every day
Without so much as a word
So how?

Gonna grab a hold
Of that little songbird
And take her for a ride
To the top of the world
Right now
To the top of the world

Fuck, yeah. smile

My others are...
Jeff Buckley's cover of 'I Know It's Over' by the Smiths.
'Grapefruit Moon' - Tom Waits
'Loving Hannah' - Bill Jones
'Julia' - Lennon (or Lennon & McCartney if you like)
'You and I' - Stevie Wonder
'What will you say' - Jeff Buckley (& Alim Quasimov) - stripped down version from Live at l'Olympia.
'Life in Art' - Mojave 3
'Gran Partita' - without fail. Most beautiful bit of music ever written.
At my most beautiful - REM
And i'm such a soppy twat, but Somewhere out there (from the soundtrack to An American Tail - remember that kids' animated film about the Mouse called Fieval who lost his family?) holds memories for me. The version released as a single sucked, but the one sung by very young child actors in the film gets me in a big way.

Memories 4 me too, that song gets to me as well! Reminds me of child girlfriends and general good times as a kid! Talking of toons, I always liked the Heuy Lewis song he did for the Disney film "Oliver and company"! It's the song at the very beginning of the film! I bought the soundtrack cheap 4 that song, again 4 nostalgic childhood memories! Song is called "Once upon a time in New York city", lyrics are nice, but the synth breaks r gorgeous sounding! Lovely melody, lovely song in every respect! Anyone remember the song in the movie?

I think that "A Different Drum" by Peter Gabriel is the most moving song I have ever heard. Vince Guaraldi's "What Child Is This?" is a heartbreaker.

Ooh, I agree. Have you heard the live version, with Lisa Stansfield and George Michael (recorded at Wembley)?. That's probably my favourite version. The harmony is beautiful.

I know everybody hates country music, and I posted this on the P&R board, but:

There's a song called The Little Girl by John Michael Montgomery that makes me cry every time I hear it.

It doesn't move me to tears, but I swear that when I lay down and listen to Alice Coltrane's Transcendance, something funky starts going on in my head and I feel like I'm floating before the album's done. It's one of the most beautiful, powerful, most spiritual pieces of music I've ever heard.
