I've connections in law enforcement. And, from what I've heard, Richmond, Va., authorities are quite sure he's hiding out in
this Philadelphia drummer's afro.

Seeing as he releases an album every five years, expect to hear from him next year. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

He and Raphael Saadiq are working on his next album. Supposedly, they've only laid down tracks with drums (some courtesy of the ever-sucking ?uestlove), bass and guitar-no keys whatsoever. Who knows if this will be the finished product or not, but it sounds interesting so far.

I hope he comes with a CD that truly blows everyone away. I've made my dislike for "Voodoo" well known around here, so I won't go into that, but it bugs me that he is taking so long. The guy has a lot of talent. You'd think songs would just be pouring from him.
All I know is, if the album isn't significantly better than his last, I'll be done with him. His first CD showed a whole lot of promise (even though it didn't really do anything innovative), and I'm still waiting to see that promise fulfilled. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

D'Angelo can take all the time he needs to put an album together. I'm sure the end result will be worth the wait.

To be honest, Jedi, as I was importing tracks from "Voodoo"on iTunes last night, I had to admit that the LP is better than i thought it was back in '00. I am very much looking forward to new D'Angelo material. He has set the benchmark for future funk that is still to be topped.
Erykah Badu, MeShell NdegeOcello, Lewis Taylor & Omar are up there with him but Voodoo is the best, most forward thinking, progressive funk album of the last 10 years. It sounds like nothin else out there, even now. Most musicians that I know are still talking about how good the sound is on that album - but so many people didnt 'get it'. That sometimes happens with albums that challenge - maybe it will be a discovered again by future generations. In the meantime Im looking forward to him coming back with the goods - Im sure he will. The Funk, the whole funk & nothin' but the funk, ya dig?!

Did anybody catch D'angelo jammin' with Eric Clapton on the tune "Sunshine Of Your Love" a few years back(New Year's '99) on a show (on ABC )called,"After New Years with David Sanborn"? I mention it because we're used to seeing D do the soul/ Funk thing , but it was fun watchin' him rock out... also proof that the best musicians can jam with anybody... Yeah, they really need to have something like that again...BTW, I'm sure you saw your boy Pat Metheny on there, right? Had I known I definitely would have been all over it. That show back when I was watching it had all kinds of artists on there. I will do today what you won't, so tomorrow I can do what you can't.

Voodoo has gotten better with age, or maybe my ears have.
I used to think it was rather bland, but it is actually quite DENSE and packed with more soul than even his soulquarian associates' albums. It's just that the approach isn't to bulldoze your sensitivies with crashing percussion (Just a subtle, tight kit) and blaring horn sections (much more muted). All the layers are there though. I've become much more of a jazz fan since 1999/2000 when we first heard these songs, and I think I "get it" now.

I've become much more of a jazz fan since 1999/2000 when we first heard these songs, and I think I "get it" now. well, i had trouble getting into 'playa playa' at first---but no more. this is my funk. i love it to death. the groove is amazing. in-the-pocket funk. deep snare and steady kick, heavy but subtle bass (especially during "play on play on" pino hits the spot), reversed hi-hat on the 3 and 4 every 4 bars, some rhythm guitar and those subtle hornlines---you should just focus on the horns all the way through to the end. crazy. and then d's specialty: the vocals. especially the harmonizing ("we're the playas number one" and "play on play on") is excellent as well as his distorded ad-libbing ("each and every niiiiight"). a good old-fashioned funk jam. the rest of the album didn't take that much time for me to get into. i still love it. can't wait for something new to drop. don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
