What Artists Will Carry The Torch Of Artistic Bravery Into The Future???

Come up with some new artists or artists that have been on the music in only a short period of time that YOU think will go on to produce great artistic work in the near and distance future. I surely got to nominate ERYKAH BADU(just gave her props on the female artist thread. I really think this woman is going to produce some great work(recordings) in the future. Her last record MAMA'S GUN was a stunning achievement!!!!! Excellent recording!!!!!

Jamiroquai---Based on their most recent CD 'A Funk Odyssey',I'd say that these guys are headed to the top. They need better promotion though.Perhaps they should consider re-locating to the U.S.,getting a new record deal, and a more aggressive manager.

Joi---She has a hot new song called "Missing You",which sounds VERY Prince-like,by the way.It was produced by Dallas Austin.I don't know too much about her,but based on this song,I predict big things ahead for her.

Lauryn Hill---Hard to believe, but Lauryn is still a relatively new artist on the scene. There were the two Fugees albums, and her own solo CD.I am going nuts waiting for her new CD,which is due this summer!!!

There are alot of artists out there who have been inspired by P and are doing some great creative music in their own right. Apart from the nu-soul crowd (Macy, Jill, Erykah, Bilal etc.), I love the new music from Kelis, NERD (aka The Neptunes), Joi, Basement Jaxx and Daft Punk - all of which is P inspired.

Craig David rules, D'Angelo, and maybe Prince if he gets Jimmy jam and Terry to produce his next record.

I agree with you Brother 915. Erykah Badu is definately one to watch for, artistically. Mama's Gun is still in heavy rotation in my player. It's a shame that it was virtually ignored while something like Alicia Keys gets more play. Christ! Life is not fair.

What did it for me, however, was to see her live. She blew me away. I saw her twice here in Los Angeles, last year. She's beyond diva and all that malarkey associated with "pop" stars. I mean the woman is amazing live. I had not felt that giddy about a live performance since I saw Prince for the the first time when I was 14. Yup! She made that big an impression on me.

Others artists that I think are going to be around with much artistic merit are Bjork and Radiohead.

I am schocked that nobody has mentiond the obvious choice. The artist that took up the slack just as Prince started to wain. The artist that has revolutionized our current music. Dance/Hip-Hop/Electronica/Rock/Jazz..she does it all....and she has even achieved something Prince hasnt..An acclaimed film. Who is this you might ask? None other then...BJORK!!! She is the most artistic and create person on this universe. HANDS DOWN!!!

On a sidenote: 2nd most innovative: Curtis Jones AKA Green Velvet AKA Cajmere. You have all heard his music. Beats thats are heard on the dance floor. The FUNK perfectly incorperated into the house groove. So many times I have heard people comment, "Damn, this is what Prince should song like..if he were playing todays music". "Brighter Days", "Answering Machine (the I DONT NEED THIS SH**T song", "LA LA LA (the little pills song)", "The Perculator" ,"Red Light (the red light, green light song"). he is the future of FUNK.

These artist are the natural progression of music. In ten years...you all will know what i mean...hehehehe (okay, maybe im a lil full of myself..but i still believe this to be true). wink

ok, davideye, i rspect ure opinion but; OMG how can u say that. jamiroquai have been around in the uk 4 a decade now and all their songs/albums sound the same. in a whole decade they have not progressed musically at all. instead, like ALOT of big british acts (notable exception being Blur and Radiohead) they have stuck 2 their same tried formula over the years. if u want them in the us-please feel free 2 take them. smile

as 4 carrying the artistic torch-IMHO;
erykah badu
jill scott
nelly furtado
-early days 4 her, hope sucess doesn't go 2 her head and she decided making music 2 please the masses overtakes her eclectic nature
talib kweli-his album with dj hi-tek (train of thought)is the BOMB, a true testement 2 how hip hop should b; enlighting, insightful lyrics and brilliant beats. if after hearing this album u don't feel like bum rushing the nearest government office and calling 4 social change and revolution, please check your pulse cause u might b dead! i CANNOT rave about this album enough exclaim

Jill Scott and Musiq Soulchild are the two most talented young artists I've heard in a while.....

Princess Superstar, clearly. Girlfriend has run her own label from day one, is a Jewish/Italian white chick rapper who's never bared her titties, started out playing punk rock, plays a mean guitar, has written at least TWO songs about Kool Keith's ass, and currently has the #11 single in the U.K. with her song "Bad Babysitter".

She freakin' rocks. She could teach Prince a thing or two about thriving outside the major label music industry system.

When you say artistic bravery, I'm thinking in terms of "creating" a mold that other artists must play "catch-up" to break. And, truthfully, I can't think of any artists doing that right now.
Of course, B'jork's a step ahead of the rest. I really dig her; and, I haven't heard Me'Shell's recent work.
I'd like to see Erykah and Jill fly high above what's been labeled the NEO-SOUL pigeon-hole (into some jazz and rock). And, I've got my eye on joi. I dig ELECTRIC performers and she's got potential.
