Al Green or Teddy Pendergrass The Commodores or Earth Wind & Fire Otis Redding or Sam Cooke James Brown or Smokey Robinson Curtis Mayfield or Luther Vandross The Spinners or Stylistics Aretha Franklin or Tammi Terrell Barry White or Issac Hayes The Chambers Brothers or Tower of Power Rick James or Grandmaster Flash I think it's unfair to pit Tammi against Aretha. If Tammi hadn't died so young, I think she would have become one of the 70s biggest soul singers, but she never got the chance. I really really like her voice and material, but of course I'm forced to choose Aretha simply because of what she is. It's probably easier to compare Tammi with Mary Wells or Kim Weston, Motown singers who never got their just due. She was like Diana Ross, only not annoying. Those Marvin-Tammi duets still have the best duet chemistry of all time IMHO. [This message was edited Thu Apr 29 11:26:04 2004 by VoicesCarry]

These are all kind of hard becuase I just know and have more CDs by some artists than others. If I had more experience with all the artists, this might be a different list.
Al Earth Otis Smokey for songwriting/James as a preformer, singer Luther Spinners Tammi Issac Tower Rick James, bitch!

Hmmm...a few of them are really tough. I guess I'm basing my choices on the music that I tend to play or have played more often.
Al Green Earth Wind & Fire Otis Redding James Brown (even though I love Smokey I gotta give the overall edge to him) Luther Vandross The Stylistics Aretha Franklin Barry White Tower of Power Rick James It would be great fun to have a rock version of this thead, or even generational or by decade one artist/group versus another from a different decade i.e. Jackson 5 vs. New Edition or Barbra Steisand vs. Celine Dion "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!
