Johnny "Guitar" Watson,,,,,,Lets Discuss! I wonder if Prince eknowledge the brotha as an influence or even work with him, both have the same space guitar and its very intresting. His "The Very Best Of" & "Ain't That A Bitch" were on heavy rotation on my stereo lately and I can't seem to get enough of him.
Any fans in the room? | |

NOOO! Get the fuck outta town? harley...that album cover is DAmn fuckin cool! i already told ya...i digs me some johnny g. one of the most underrated guitar slingers there ever was. jimi was into him too. (and for those who don't know) johnny was playing behind his back when jimi was in diapers...or first grade!) any johnny is worth a listen...but get his 50's stuff. and you'll hear the loudest guitar weirdness stuff U ever woulda heard back then. the brotha was WAY ahead of his time! (stevie miller took his nickname from him)

stymie...U and harley kept blowing me away with your wide-
range of musical taste...johnny guitar? most of the peeps i hang with don't even WANt to check this dude out! (u two are 2COOL! seriously...johnny's story i an intresting one. he started out on sax and piano and picked up guitar afterwards. i have a few early 50's songs where he's playing piano. (he was pretty good on that, too) rumour has it-he did some "unsavory stuff" with rock legend larry williams (he did bony maronie & dizzy miss lizzie) in between his performing. in etta james autobio-she talks about him at length. he was HER guy...best friends... his personality was like his music-hip,funky and funny. for any guitar freaks out there-b4 you rave about all of the new guitar heroes-please do yo self a favor and go get some johnny g. what he was doing in the 50's and early 60's-these new guitar GODS ain't even done yet. if you dig JImi and ernie Isley you gonna dig the gangster of love! youngca

JGW was all that!
maybe his "blues-soul, soul-blues" amalgamam was "too much" for some, but I dug him almost right off the bat.. ONCE I heard "Real Mother For Ya" (clever little play on words, there) I like, at the end of that song where he goes "yeah, gimme 2 gallons o' "low lead" (cain't affo nut'n else).. I'm get me 2 hot dogs.. & a strawberry soda".. it did seem like, for a while though, after that song, many of his other songs sounded like "real mother".. but still, his playing, his technique, his (often) "down home" sense of humor were GREAT! I'll see you tonight..

One of the best vocalists, guitarists, keyboardists ever.
I would put Johnny Guitar Watson in the class with marvin gaye for just voice alone. Etta James said in her bio she thought he was the greatest singer on the planet. And Zappa...he loved Watson to no end

Oh yeah, all the stuff he recorded with Frank Zappa was a lot of fun too.

JGW is the man in these parts of Texas. God rest his soul...
The funniest JGW album cover is the "Real Mother For Ya" album, with lanky Johnny stuffing himself in a mini caddy...priceless! Thanks to Harlepolis , I can now share the pic [This message was edited Fri Aug 1 13:33:39 PDT 2003 by codshort] ______________________________________
