"Funkin For Jamaica (NY)"

that song was just on, and I was thinking about the music that came outta Jamaica NY( Queens)...All the "Kats", as they call themselves ( under The tutelage of the late Weldon Irvine Jr ( Whose own records ( Like " Spirit Man" were sampled by Tribe Called Quest). They include (among many others):

Tom Browne ( Trumpet: " Funkin For Jamaica", "Thighs High[Grip Your Hips and Move"]

Marcus Miller ( Bassist, writer/producer for Miles Davis(" Tutu"), Luther Vandross, David Sanborn, Jamaica Boys, etc.)

Lenny White ( Jazz/rock Funk Fusion Drummer/producer for Return To Forever, Twennynine ( "Peanut Butter"), Jamaica Boys, etc.)

Bernard Wright(Keyboards; "Who Do You Love," After You", "Haboglabotribbin'", " Spinnin", " Bread Sandwiches"; Tom Browne, Dave Gruisin, Michal Urbaniak, Sadao Watanabe, Roy Hargrove, etc)

Donald Blackman( Keyboards; " Holdin You, Lovin You", " Heart's Desire",, Twennynine, Sting, Lenny White, P-funk, etc.)

Eddie Martinez( Guitarist; RUN-DMC (" Rock Box", King Of Rock"),Twennynine, Robert Palmer, etc.)

Bobby Broom(Guitarist(" Clean Sweep")

Barry " Sonjohn" Johnson( Bass, Vocals , writer/producer; Twennynine,etc.)

They, along with collaborators like Dave Gruisin and Larry Dunn, created their own distinctive style of Jazz/Funk--like the song said, "Jamaica Funk, That's What it Is..."

Glitter was good album, but that was a horrific cover..and so was Last Night A DJ Saved My Life

The Good:

-All My Life (sounds like recycled Teena Marie, but nice to hear Mariah trying something new)
-Never Too Far (good vocal performance but bland everything else)

The Bad:

-Lead The Way (standard treacly ballad #1)
-If We (lame R&B duet #1 - is this a Mariah record or a Ja Rule record? She basically only contributes background vocals to this track)
-I Didn't Mean To Turn You On (a remake using the SAME instrumental as the original is something we don't really need. Lazy, lazy, lazy.)
-Reflections (standard treacly ballad #2)
-Last Night A DJ Saved My Life (because 80s dance tracks always featured hardcore rappers on them rolleyes)
-Want You (lame R&B duet #2)
-Twister (Mariah tries to get "deep". Enough said.)

The Ugly:

-Loverboy (WTF?)
-Loverboy (Remix) (WTF? + Da Brat = WTF?x2)
-Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica) - WORST. COVER. EVER.

What was missing from this album was Mariah's usual sense of melody. Where'd it go? Off with Affanasieff, perfhaps?

OMG…I read your song list and was transported back to high school. I ask people if they remember 'Peanut Butter' and they look at me like I'm crazy. Me and an old classmate are planning our 20th high school reunion and you've reminded me of some great songs to give the DJ.
