The real finess thinks correctly. I've been looking for some out-there psychdelic-soul-rock material, and that track caught my ear instantly. Great listening experience... ..... BULLSEYE!

Meshell Ndegeocello covered this song in the late '90s on a movie soundtrack (I can't remember which one, she's contributed to a lot of movie soundtracks). I didn't particularly care for it, only because I thought the guitar playing was weak. Otherwise it was pretty good.
They don't get credit for it but the Chambers Bros. were doing the Funk/Rock thing before Sly & The Family Stone. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Rare Earth's version of the Temptation's Get Ready might fit into that category. To expand on something Supernova said, one reason "the guitar playing was weak" on older material that might be considered "psychdelic-soul-rock" was because many times the guitar parts were being played by r&b studio cats that just played traditional r&b styles through a cheap fuzz-box. They used to call it "playing psych". Listen to the guitar solo in Wilson Pickett's Engine Number 9 for an example of what i'm attempting to describe here. I'm not saying the guitar playing was weak on the original version of the song, but on Meshell Ndegeocello's cover of the song. I can't remember who played the guitar on her version. I'm hip. My comment was a wider one on general guitar playing in the "psychdelic-soul-rock" genre that Taureau spoke about. Not specific to the Chambers Brothers cut or Meshell's cover. Thanks for clearing that up though. Maybe I wasn't clear enough. Tribal Disorder "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I'll look into Rare Earth and that Wilson track, thanks for the tips! Actually I thought that Time Has Come (Today) would have been well placed among the tracks from 'Psychodelic Shack'...reminds me of a cross between the Temptations and the Rolling Stones . Great stuff. ..... BULLSEYE!

Great stuff. You're quite welcome. Speaking of the Temptations, there's an album called Psychedelic Soul that includes: Cloud Nine Psychedelic Shack War Ball Of Confusion Papa Was A Rollin' Stone Another Temptations track would be "Shakey Ground". Co-written and guitar work by the great Eddie Hazel (Funkadelics). All of which might fit what you're looking for. Tribal Disorder Yeah I have the Psychodelic Shack/All Directions double album release...it has some masterful songs on there! I also have the Cairmen of the Board double album release, 'Bitter Sweet' and 'Skin I'm In'...actually the latter is also Eddie Hazel and various other p-funk alumni strutting their stuff all over....hmm, I haven't listened to that for ages but I'm sure that's along the same psychodelic-soul-rock trip *digs through cd collection*. ..... That's settles it. This one goes on the "to be obtained" list. Here's a humorous quote from an article dealing with the Temptations "psychedelic soul" period by writer Matthew Weiner. "Back on the charts, one only needs to look at the cover of 1969’s Puzzle People to get an idea how serious the Temptations were about continuing their new direction: paisley muumuus, headbands, tough street corner scowls – it was as if the group had purchased a Jimi Hendrix starter kit." http://www.stylusmagazine....php?ID=36 Tribal Disorder "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Besides checking out Jimi, Whitfield was always checking out Funkadelic. According to George Clinton, Billy "Bass Nelson and Eddie Hazel, Norman was always coming around to shows to check out what funkadelic were doing, then running back to the studio to see how he could use it. To this day, Billy Nelson swears that the costumes on the "Puzzle People" album were taken directly from the costumes that Funkadelic had been wearing on stage. Billy also says that Melvin Franklin would call them up and say things like " You know that tune that y'all did a couple of nights ago? well Norman just cut us on that tune today..." Ironic that a couple of years later, Eddie Hazel and Billy Nelson would end up playing on the Temptations "A Song For You", (especially on " Shakey Ground") ,which was the Temptations' first non- Whitfield production...
