RENE ZELLWEGER TO PLAY JANICE JOPLIN - WTF??? You gotta be kidding me! I think her turn in Chicago has gone to her head or something. I know she can handle the acting stuff but can she do that voice? Can she even come close??? I would have liked to see Beth Hart or Nikka Costa (hell, maybe even Courtney Love w/ lots of overdubbing ) give it a try. I know they're not actors but damn, if you can't perform w/ that fire from your gut it's gonna suck nuts

Yeah, this was reported about 6 months ago, and Zellweger was in talks. They've now signed Pink to the film. I'm not kidding. The working title is "The Gospel According To Janis". BUT Zellweger still may make her own Joplin film by a different scriptwriter. Working title for that one is "Piece Of My Heart", but the production status is UNKNOWN at the moment, and nothing's been heard since last November. It is highly likely that that project simply morphed into the Pink one, which will film this summer. [This message was edited Sat Apr 24 2:39:28 2004 by VoicesCarry]

I just heard this on that VH1's "Best Week Ever" - they made it seem like she just signed on to do it, I didn't know it was old news I knew there was one more person that could be suitable to play Janis - Pink is a decent choice imo. Killer voice, attitude, not so easy on the eyes You don't sound crazy about Pink for this - who would you choose VoicesCarry?

Someone who looks at least SOMETHING like Janis and who has experience in the field. Not some faux-tough popster from the 21st century. Giving Pink her first acting gig on something like this is just stupid . Evidently she's read for the part and they think she can pull it off, though. I thought Bette Midler was hearbreaking in The Rose, but she's about 30 years too late to make this flick. Too bad, because she was perfect. You need someone who can capture Janis's stage performances, and she did it - and then some. That's where I think Pink will fall short. Although, to be fair, that was essentially Midler's first film. OH YES, Bette would have been perfect I'm gonna do for Pink/Joplin what I'm for Andre/Hendrix - hope they don't fuck it up & we're all pleasantly surprised I hear you though, she's totally unproven as an actress & looks absolutely nothing like her. That's why Bette would have been so good - they're kinda in the same family looks-wise. Beth Hart is WAY skinny w/ a sharp, angular face... Nikka's face is probably too distinct... I dunno - I'm just certain that Rene is completely WRONG!

I like your suggestions! I think Beth Hart would tear it up She's got the voice for it. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I think they should definitely use an actress rather than a singer/performer.If not Zellweger, than an unknown.
Janis was a very interesting person with a BUNCH of personal issues.I doubt any of today's younger performers could pull off what is probably a difficult role. Perhaps they should get Charlize Theron. They managed to "ugly" her up enough to play that awful Wournos woman, so Janis shouldnt be a problem. Not that Janis was THAT ugly anyway. Actually, Courtney Love might be good too.She won all sorts of accolades for her work on that Larry Flynt film a few years ago.But I have to wonder if it wouldnt be hitting a little too close to home. "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."

that's like when JLo wanted to play frida. WRONG! just plain WRONG. Actually I think that both of these young women could pull off the "visual" of Joplin easily; that's why you have make-up teams on a set to transform things into the impossible: however I do think that vocally, the person who could pull the performance through would be Pink. And by the way, you are entirely right about JLo and the Frida thing; Salma Hyak KILLED it, in terms of both her performance AND her production of that project.

[This message was edited Sat Apr 24 3:30:09 2004 by VoicesCarry] Aw V.C., you're always so harsh! Keeping in mind that Bette's version of the Joplin story THE ROSE (actually it was a hybrid of Joplin's life mixed with Bette's life as a Bathhouse Diva) was her first film gig, maybe Pink MIGHT not be SO bad! I mean, with the proper director, they might be able to draw something really electric out of Pink, as Mark Rydell was able to do with Bette. If they have the right director who can give her the right "tools", I wouldn't doubt for a minute that Alicia Moore could pull it off...somehow more than Zellweger . By the way, if you have DVD, you should check out the director's commentary on The Rose in the most pivotal scenes; it's stunning to watch how the director can bring his actor to "that place" where they need to be to make the scenes "work". Also, slightly off topic, did you know that one of Bette's former boyfriends has a tribute page to her online that has nearly ALL of her concert performances from before she hit it big with The Rose? He even included the audio from when she was taping her concert scenes for the movie and it's so amazing to listen to her in between takes when she's out of character and talking to the arena crowd, then listening to her slip back into character for the filming and NAILING the performance! Cool stuff.

I don't know why they shouldn't consider a singer/performer for the project; when Bette Midler was chosen for the Mark Rydell version of Janis' story in THE ROSE, she had been known only as a grammy award winning vocalist (best new artist 1972), and you know what? Through proper direction (and an abundance of talent and wherewithall) SHE NAILED IT !

OH YES - I love love love her in that! She was just so real, sang from the gut, was FUCKED up... Like VoicesCarry said Bette would have been GREAT to play the part had they made it years ago . [This message was edited Sun Apr 25 16:26:31 2004 by CalhounSq]
