June Pointer, meet Whitney Houston...Crackpipe? Discuss...

June Pointer Whitmore, the youngest original member of the Pointer Sisters, was charged yesterday (April 26) with cocaine possession, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said. The 50 year-old singer was arrested last Thursday with two other people outside the Hollywood apartment of her older sister, Bonnie, but was released on bail.

Bonnie Pointer, who left the group in 1978 to pursue a solo career with Motown, was not charged in the case. Whitmore has not performed with the Pointer Sisters in more than three years, according to their lawyer, Martin Singer.

The two remaining members of the original lineup, Anita and Ruth Pointer, previously obtained a court order barring their younger sibling from the group and asserting their exclusive rights to the Pointer Sisters name, Singer said. He said Whitmore was kicked out of the group because of repeated substance abuse problems that prevented her from making several appearances.

Anita and Ruth Pointer, who now perform as a trio with Ruth's daughter, Issa, are currently en route to Belgium for a tour, Singer said. He said they were in Montana last week recording a DVD when Whitmore was arrested.

Details of Whitmore's arrest were sketchy. But a spokesperson for prosecutors said she and her co-defendants were confronted by police officers that responded to citizen complaints and found them in possession of cocaine and cocaine pipes.

Whitmore is charged with one count of cocaine possession and a lesser charge of possessing an illegal smoking device. Although conviction carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison, Whitmore would be eligible for a California program that allows first-time offenders to have their record expunged if they complete drug rehabilitation.

Legal representatives for Whitmore were not readily available. No arraignment date has been announced.

The Pointer Sisters produced a string of hits in the late 1970s and early '80s, including "He's So Shy," "Slow Hand" and a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Fire."

That is one sad story. I can't believe they are still working and kicked her out of the group. She really needs to clean up her act.

Pointer Sister 'on drugs charge'

The youngest member of the original Pointer Sisters trio has been charged with cocaine possession, reports say.
June Pointer Whitmore, 50, was arrested in Los Angeles on Thursday, according to the Reuters news agency.

Ms Whitmore was arrested with two other people outside the Hollywood apartment of her sister, Bonnie, who was not charged in connection with the case.

She was charged with one count of cocaine possession, as well as possessing an "illegal smoking device".

Prison sentence

Whitmore, who has not performed with the Pointer Sisters in more than three years was released on bail.

She could face a maximum penalty of three years in prison, if found guilty.

The original Pointer Sisters trio produced a string of hits in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including Slow Hand and Jump (For My Love).

The two remaining members of the original line-up, Anita and Ruth Pointer now perform as a trio with Ruth's daughter, Issa.

disbelief What a shame because I love the Pointer Sisters.I saw them on a TV special last year, performing without June, and it just wasn't the same.I was hoping that,by now,June would have gotten herself together and re-join the other two girls.

June has always been off the hook and crazy...Yes, I concur she has been on crack now for ages... I am surprised that this is her first arrest. The old school original line up (June, Ruth, Anita, Bonnie) is my favorite. Those Blue Thumb recordings are a must. Pick up "Yes We Can Can" The Best of the Blue Thumb Recordings you will not be disappointed. Jams like, "Yes We Can Can, How Long (Betcha Got A Chick On The Side), Black Coffee" will start you off nicely. This is not the pop version but more of complex vocal group. Don't get me wrong I love thier 80's music also, but the 70's version is mine. wink

Peace, Serveitupfrankie*

I always admired Madonna for not filling in the gap. She got so PO'd when Vogue filled the gap in digitally on one of her covers that she refused to accept their woman of the year award in '91 (I think).
