Parliament/ Funkadelic tracks I know this has probably been done here before , but I was wondering what people's favorite Parliament/ Funkadelic tracks were, including Pfunk All stars, Bootsy, Brides , Eddie, Bernie, Mutiny and any other offshoots... I'm more into earlier Funkadelic, than Parliament/P-Funk's later stuff. I guess I just love Funkadelic's more guitar-heavy, rock sound. Anyway, here are a few faves:
Loose Booty Maggot Brain Super Stupid Funky Dollar Bill Biological Speculation Cosmic Slop Nappy Dugout You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure Standing on the Verge of Getting it On Red Hot Mama Jimmy's Got a Little Bit of Bitch in Him Let's Take it to the Stage Get Off Your Ass and Jam No Head no Backstage Pass [This message was edited Thu Apr 15 13:55:20 2004 by minneapolisgenius] "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

[quote] any thoughts about the motor city madness compilation they just put out. i haven't really heard much of the old stuff and was thinking of buying it, though i'll probably get maggot brain first. not always a great fan of double disc compilations to get me started with unfamiliar material as i usually find them overlong, preferring original albums as the band's statement of art (with the notable exception of P's the hits, which got me here).

I don't have that compilation (maybe my husband does though ) I'll have to check. Anyway, you HAVE to have Maggot Brain in your collection. Start with that and also get Cosmic Slop, Standing on the Verge of Getting it On, Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow, and well, pretty much all of Funkadelic's earlier stuff (thier earlier music is just a personal preference though). It is more guitar oriented and there isn't a horn section as with P-Funk. Much more hard rock/funk sounding. There is some amazing music on all of those albums, so it's hard for me to pick just one or two albums. Hey Mark, the 2cd motor city madness is a great place play to start. The earlier material sounds better then the regular cd's(Good remastering & Book)Only 1 or 2 songs are edit's too.

Its a good collection with a few glaring omissions such as "Let's Take It To The Stage".I cant imagine why they left that or "What Is Soul" off. On the other hand , the remastering is great and they seem to have "corrected" some problems with the title track from "Free Your Mind..." Id recommend it to a newbie...but youd still wanna pick up the first and third albums.("Funkadelic" & "Maggot Brain") "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."

Red Hot Mamma/Vital Juices -this is actually all one recording split up into two parts for the origial album and 45 release( Vital Juices was called an "instrumental" B side), I think Westbound should have put the complete, unedited version out for the CD reissue...maybe one day...
Soul Mate - another tune that got edited down, just as Eddie hazel was just getting going...I recently heard an unedited version that's been circulating...again, westbound should have released the full version... Good To Your Earhole Standing on the Verge Cosmic Slop Flash Light PFunk-wants To Get Funked Up Comin' Round The Mountain ( Buddy Miles on the drum kit) Maggot Brain( Hazel Version) Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts Maggot Brain ( Hampton live version) Sir Nose d'voidofunk (Pay attention-B3M) Mothership Connection( If you hear any noise) Bootzilla The Motor Booty Affair Ick a Prick Happy to Have ( Happiness On Our Side)- Bernie Worrell Placebo Syndrome Aqua Boogie Squeeze Toy (Trey Lewd) Sloppy Seconds [This message was edited Thu Apr 15 15:01:40 2004 by paligap] " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout

I think that too many people dismiss p funk as having nonsense lyrics, when actually there are some incredibly profound themes running through their stuff( " If You Don't Like the effects , don't produce the cause") But Placebo Syndrome was a song I had to rediscover. Yes, i NEVER heard talk of those 2 songs. Placebo Syndrome is some weird ass funky shit and twisted and elegant in the same time. I dont even fave the Funkentelechy CD, but a friend of mine gave me almost the whole Funkadelic / Parliament collection..so I'm discovering the old Funkadelic alot.
