SALSA recommendations???

I've recently had the urge to get back into my roots and listen to
more latin music...although it's hard to buy since i'm not familiar
with the bands/musicians. Any recommendations? Who's good?

Basically, what I do own is the more "pop" stuff...Selena, Enrique,
Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony...
I enjoy these, but would like to try new sounds, more salsa or latin
flavored jazz.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I think I'll start with Sheila E's influences...Tito Puente and Sheila's father, Pete.
Any suggestions as to which CD's?

ok..this is still in the pop vein and i apologise for that. but i just got back from spain and this track "Buleria” by David Bisbal always got me dancing. i love it. he may be a pop idol winner boxed but this song is a chooooon.
i got the album and there are 3 or 4 great dance tracks...rest are mid tempos..but hes got a nice voice. no idea whats hes singing about but hey shrug

If you like Salsa with a Hip Hop flavor, check out:

FULANITO

They're pretty hot.

Otherwise, you can do some:

oscar de Leon
Celia Cruz
Marc Anthony
Tito Nieves
Willie Colon

And for a Japanese spin on it (and they are VERY GOOD)

Orquesta de la Luz

Another thing you can do it look for "Salsa mega mixes" or other "Various Artists" cds with a song or two from the list above. That way, you can branch out and find other artists you might enjoy.

Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another

Marc Anthony is said to be working on another salsa album (in addition to another pop album). His last salsa CD 'Libre' is incredible,so I can't wait for the new album.

nod nod nod and don't forget , for a more urban, newyorican flava there's always "LA INDIA"...her voice is so powerful, and at turns sassy and street- i just LUV-HAH! she'll make you move your booty all across the floor, even if you're just at home by yourself cleanin' your kitchen in your pajamas!

if you like La India....dig in the crates and check out La Lupe..."the queen of latin soul,"que te pedi" & "si vuelves tu" are both covers of this amazing artist that La India recorded for her "Sola" album...La Lupe gives drama.
I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back.
I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there.
I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish.

9. Raulin Rosendo~ Derroche
10. La Fuga~ Amiga Mia
11. Carlos Vega~ Que Voy Hacer Contigo
12. Puerto Rican Power~ Aguinaldo Pa To El Ano (Navidena)

working thru it now...nice rhythms.

Check those out (scroll to the bottom for samples). remember that Fulanito is more edgy hiphopish and remember that Orquestra de la Luz is all Japanese. smile

You're on a good start, nonetheless. smile
