Any Fans Of Art Tatum? There Should Be Dammit!

Duke Ellington said in his biography book that if there was eva a PIANO GOD then that must be ART TATUM and Patrice Rushen said many times that "He should be the one pianists listen to whenever they have a low or high self-esteem day" lol!

Forget about his achievments 4 the moment, his piano chops and the essence of his playing could neva be captured by anybody anytime anywhere. Duke Ellington & Teddy Wilson were banging their heads against the wall trying to reach the place where Tatum play his heart out from.

I have this "Live-After hours" obscure record of him alone playing those keys to heaven above. Everytime I learn/hear/discover something new from that no name album whenever I give it a spin.

He's my ABSLOUTE FAVE pianist,,,EVER!

Amazing Piano Player!! And then when you consider that he was legally blind...I actually saw some footage of him from the early 40's, playing in a club...I was dumbfounded!! I think he IS the PIANO GOD...

Hell yes and I saw that footage in that PBS Blues documentary. Ray Charles and Clint Eastwood (of all people) were talking about him and then they cut to that footage from a small club in the 40's and my jaw was left on the floor.

"That guy could play as fast with his left hand as he could his right" - Ray Charles

The recorded works aren't the best recording quality (what do you want for the time period?) but the guy was a piano god. Period.

Most definitely. I only recently discovered his playing and was floored. I taped the Scorcese PBS thing, but I haven't watched that Clint Eastwood one yet. Now I'll have to dig it out to see that footage you all are talking about!
