Or something like that. My god, what a night. Opening night of their reuninon tour in Minneapolis at the Fine Line. I don't even know where to begin. It was a sold out show, (even I missed out on the ticket sale that only lasted 3 minutes) and I purchased my ticket from a co-worker's friend's co-worker. I paid $200 for a ticket that was $23 retail, but they were going on eBay for $350 or so, so I kinda got a deal. One thing I can say, well worth it. I was 17 again for one night. (I even dressed the part in a vintage Jesus & Mary Chain "Head On" tee. )

The Pixies kicked my ass. We started out with cocktails in the back of the venue as we watched it slowly fill and fill. The opening band was boring, and I doubt anyone was much paying attention. As they finished, my friends and I started to work the crowd toward the stage. With as packed as it was (obviously oversold) I didn't expect us to get anywhere, but somehow it worked. Once the Pixies started, 2 of us made it to within 3 people in front of the stage, smack dab in the middle. As they kicked off with Bone Machine I lost all sense of time and place. I was jumping with the crowd, being slammed this way and that and I didn't care. It was the sweatiest, happy-go-lucky bounce fest I've ever been in the middle of. The crowd was very mixed between young and old, but I think we all felt like teenagers for the evening. And everyone was sooooo polite. There was a tall guy standing in front of us and 3 songs in we asked if we could stand in front of him, and he let us! How often does that happen?
I couldn't begin to give a setlist, but off the top of my head I heard Bone Machine, No 13 Baby, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Gigantic, Gouge Away, Debaser, La La Love You ( ), Levitate Me, Caribou, Velouria, Into the White, 2 different versions of Wave of Mutilation, Where is My Mind, Broken Face... Damn. Damn. (It's worth repeating.) And when all was said and done, I got a 2 disc set of the entire performance (for $25) on my way out the door.
I might get to see them again in November (if I can get tix before they sell out this time).

What a night.

To wind down and discuss the show we headed to a small basement bar in Nordeast Mpls. Apparently it was Motley Crue karaoke night where they have a live band playing mostly Motley Crue and other metal tunes while audience members sing. It was kinda silly. But at one point I turned around and low and behold, f-ing Lori Barbero was behind the bar tending drinks. Rock n Roll is alive, and it lives in Minneapolis.

No nostalgic speeches were made. No $250 golden-circle tickets were sold. Nothing the Pixies said or did Tuesday night at the Fine Line Music Cafe suggested they were playing their first reunion concert -- and that, of course, made the show all the more special.
The T-shirts on sale called it the "Pixies Sellout" tour, but the truth is the Boston band that helped give birth to '90s alternative rock could have done a lot more to milk its first public gig in 11 years.
Tickets originally priced at $30 were going for as much as $400 on eBay. Judging from the 700 fans who were lucky (or rich) enough to get in, the quartet could have charged twice that amount and gotten away with playing half the 27 songs in Tuesday's set list.
Actually, there were a lot of noticeable omissions in the fast-paced, 90-minute performance. Like many groups who split up less than amicably, the Pixies stuck mainly to early recordings -- from when things were still fun and innocent in the band.
Only one song from each of its final two albums was played, while three-quarters of its first two LPs and even a big chunk of its little-heard 1986 debut EP were offered. It didn't matter, though. The crowd howled along to obscure oldies such as "Broken Face" and "Levitate Me" as readily as it did to latter staples such as "Here Comes Your Man" and "U Mass." The only song that wasn't widely recognized Tuesday was a cover of Neil Young's "Winterlong," which tells you a little something about the primary age and record collection of the Pixies' cult fan base.
This truly was a reunion concert Gen-X style, something the kids of boomers have really only experienced with one other band, Jane's Addiction (which unfortunately has milked its reunions). The Pixies predated the post-Nirvana days when cool alternative bands got played on FM radio, so there really were no "hits" to play. That left them with terrific, deep-album cuts such as "No. 13 Baby" and "La La Love You," the latter of which was introduced by bassist Kim Deal as "one we never, ever played live."
The few other comments made by the band members fit the self-deprecating tone of the T-shirts. When frontman Frank Black/Black Francis (real name: Charles Thompson) struggled to tune his guitar before "Vamos," he remarked, "This is starting to seem like our first gig."
There were some missteps: a botched bass part in "Tame," an out-of-tune "Velouria," and a poorly paced encore that lagged except for a sing-along version of "Where Is My Mind?" On the other hand, Francis' scream of a voice was in great shape, and he and Deal -- who were at odds with each other all these years -- could still harmonize like best buddies. Thankfully, that's as close as they got to appearing sentimental.


Pixies fans discover the magic of 'instant' live CD

Twin Cities music fans got their introduction to the "instant" live CD after Tuesday night's concert by the Pixies at the Fine Line Music Cafe.
Ten minutes after the band finished its encore, fans could pick up a $25 double-disc recording of the show they had just seen. Before this, bands such as Pearl Jam and the Who sold "bootlegs" of local concerts via Internet downloads or by mail, with a few days delay.
The sound on the Pixies CD was less than studio-perfect, but good enough to impress fans who didn't know what they were getting.
"I was skeptical, but it seems to work," said Jonathan Kinsel of Edina. "I'm still listening to it," he said Wednesday afternoon.
Disclive, of New York, is behind the recordings. The CDs were mixed and mass-burned in a trailer outside the club. A Disclive representative said the trickiest part is hand-placing the discs into the cardboard CD jackets, but the process went smoothly Tuesday. Only 1,000 copies were printed, and half had been pre-sold online, via www.disclive.com.

I was reading a very bad review of the show in the Pioneer Press this morning so I was hoping you hadn't wasted your money. The reviewer basically said that the group already seemed like they weren't getting along and the reviewer wondered if they would make it through the tour. His main criticism was with the lead singer who he said looked like he didn't want to be there and was just going through the motions.

$200 is a lot but it sounds like you got your monies worth. Are you going again this summer?

They're coming back in November and I am planning on going. I'll have to check out that article. As the mpls paper mentioned, there were a few flaws in the show. But I was having too good a time to let it bother me.

I will say, there wasn't a lot of comaraderie going on on stage, but I didn't feel it there was anything negative either. Just kinda straight forward.
