"Damita Jo" Flops In The UK

"Dammit Ho" - sorry - "DAMITA JO" is a new entry in the UK album charts at No 36! The single isn't even in the Top 40 ... Whoops now!

Um, this is really, really old news. Janet bashing is passé. Didn't you get the memo? wink

To set your facts straight though: Damita Jo debuted at no. 32 last week, and falls to no. 72 this week.

And the reason "Just A Little While" isn't on the charts? Because it was JUST RELEASED YESTERDAY. So look for its debut next week. You can't chart without a commercial single in the UK.

Number 72 after just two weeks on the chart?!! I would never have predicted that. That's the first time that one of Janet's albums has failed to hit the uk top ten. Well, that's assuming that her first two albums don't really qualify as "proper" Janet albums.

I hope this finally puts to rest the "Janet's career is stronger then Michael's" BS. Michael debuted at #1 in the UK with Number Ones (a greatest hits album that most people already have all the songs featured) and managed to stay in the top 3 for weeks on end. All Janet was dealing with was the backlash from "nipplegate" (which actually made people aware of Janet again) while Michael was dealing with child molestation allegations. Now who's bad? cool

Um, UK charts are based solely on sales. So no, it can't happen.

Janet's not very popular internationally. Well, in Japan but that's about it.

I think the "Official" - i.e Radio 1 Chart is based solely on sales. Some of the other principal chart shows like the Pepsi / Capital countdown charts I think do take airplay into account to a small degree... confused

Yes, I'm only talking about the equivalent of the American Hot 100, compiled by the UK Charts Co.

Her international fame and sales are nowhere near (relatively) her American success. She's no Michael in that respect. Sure she's done well, but she doesn't seem to have the ultra-loyal fan base of Michael or Madonna.

2 3 JANET JACKSON VIRGIN 64,940 NOW IN: 49.83%

According to sales estimates so far, expect her to basically maintain her placement, but lose over 50% to about 150K.

No way was there any backlash at all, no. Nobody cares in the UK if a nipple is shown here and there - for gawd's sake - they show that shit in the biggest selling tabloid newspaper every single morning, and far worse on TV.

What made the UK news about it was the staggeringly surprising reaction to it in the US.

Could be bad word of mouth for this album that's done it. It's the first time i've not bought one of her albums on release day. i've heard a few tracks. Not impressed enough to part with my cash.

Nah, no one gave a fuck about Janet's left nipple here. Actually, no one gives too much of a good fuck about the rest of her either - starting with her shite new album and that reconstituted gargoyle she's going out with.

Janet has never been huge in Europe...as for the Uk...it's no surprise really..the Rythm Nation
album didn't even spawn a single top 10 hit...JALW is currently @ #13 on the midweek sales chart. 'Damita Jo' has sold less than 10k so far...

It's very much a global flop really...
In the past week, "DJ" has sold 480,000 units worldwide. Overall, sales at this point are around 530K worldwide (as of April 9.)

Billboard reports that I Want You has 21.1 million listeners (#62 airplay); it alos says JAWL peaked at 28 million.

Damita Jo in Japan:

First Week: 12,884 copies
Second week: 27,510 copies
Third Week: 22,647 copies
Fourth Week: 14,557 copies
Total: 77,598 copies

Chart run: 18-10-13-15

Debut positions:
DJ debuts at No. 21 in Germany
DJ debuts at #40 in Brazil
DJ debuts at #34 in Denmark
Damita Jo makes another debut - at #43 in Sweden
#37 Debut in Italy
Falls off the Irish chart from #72
Damita Jo debuts at #49 in Spain
Debuts #49 in Austria
Damita Jo debuts at #50 in New Zealand.
Damita Jo debuts at #35 in France.

Belgium:

Debuts #34 Flanders
Debuts #40 Wallonia

DJ debuts at #34 on Swisschart

"Damita Jo" tumbles 18-44 in Australia.

Yup, and only Escapade and Black Cat got higher than #20. Which is why her UK singles from that period are so rare.

Well, I guess, for an "artist" of Janet's stature. the album's flopped. She'll just have to try harder next time.

No hit lead-single + a god-awfull previous album + mixed reviews at best + not so many 'real' Janet-fans (i really think her sales outside the US will suffer because of Michael's fall in popularity) = disaster sales. Hopefully she can break even in the long run, possibly with the help of a tour. Otherwise her next album may be do or die.

(for the record, i quite like Damita Jo, it's much better than AFU and has some single potentional imo. It just looks like it won't happen in the US this time.)

Mariah can sing but she still sucks. Janet's got a weedy little voice but she doesn't suck. Only her current album does - and that duet she did she with Cliff Richard - that sucks and swallows.
