Marilyn MANSON...

An undeniably influential and stylistically original artist of our generation, of extreme cultural relevance...

...or just another geeky cock-jedi who enjoys the attention shown towards his evil facade, the personal irony of which provides him with daily amusement?

I've never understood the purpose of Brian Warners imaginative behaviour, although I have to admit his version of Sweet Dreams is one of the most inspired covers I've heard. confused

What do you think of this guy?

Sorry, I know it's the 'Music:Non-Prince forum', but I didn't know where else to post.

Well, I've been a fan since late '97. I wish I knew about him since '94 cuz I missed out on all the great tours throughout those years. I really would have liked to see the Dead To The World tour. That's when Manson was in his prime. But I have managed to see him at least 6 times on tour, so I've seen some good shit. I was especially glad to have met him and the band last year. They were mostly cool, so I have nothing bad to say. I think the music and shows are still great even after 10 years. Hopefully he'll have the staying power. Prince had a good 10 years before it started going downhill.

I like some of his tracks, I just think he tries a bit too hard. He's also seems to be a really great guy; if you've seen Bowling For Columbine, you'll know what I mean.

He's been known to be an asshole too. His now "former" guitar Player, John 5 said Manson never spoke to him socially except to once say "Happy Birthday, faggot." I find this hard to believe, but I guess it's possible.

And as far as Bowling For Columbine goes, Manson said although he felt strongly about the point he was making, he disagrees with much of the documentary and Michael Moore's politics.

Maybe. Manson's one thing this minute, another the next.

I really enjoyed Mechanical Animals and The Last Tour On Earth. I picked up the God Guns & Goverment dvd a couple months ago, and was both let down and pleased with it.

I'd love to see him live, he's a great performer. Some of the stuff he did on there kinda rubbed me the wrong way though. I cringed when he screamed out "Fuck safe sex!" and everyone cheered.

He's only 6ft1? Hah, he has said in the public that he's much taller, must be the platform boots then...

Oh, what do I think of Manson? Try Foetus if you want to see somebody doing the same thing much better with some genuine artistry and not having to resort to licking the asses of the mall goths of this world all the time.

It's all a matter of preference. Who do you like better in his category?

I don't think it's a matter of preference. It's a matter of looking outside the limitations of what music the mainstream channels let the majority of people to access. The internet is a good tool to find new music, so for example there's the Cold Meat link supplied above if anybody is interested in taking the fascination they have for Marilyn Manson's expression to somewhere a bit deeper.

Who do I think does the same thing better? Foetus, for example.

I don't care for his image and all that tripe, I simply enjoy a large variety of his music.

That article though about MM door knocking etc seems a little far fetched to me & it's no surprise but then again the media does bullshit a lot.

Meanwhile Manson has had two #1 albums and has sold millions of records. The man's doing his thing.

Like I said: "mall goths".

The fact that he has achieved all his mainstream success isn't really a sign of anything else than a compromise he has done musically and imagewise. He never set out to do just his "art", just set out to become big. And that to me, is a sell-out. He has had his influence from the underground and just took the shocking parts from whomever: White House, Foetus, Genesis P'Orridge etc. and capitalized on it.

I think it's going overboard when you are using your status as a rockstar to also promote your embarrassing watercolour doodlings in a genuine art gallery. Plus the guy never really credits any of his bandmates for the creation of the music, altough in reality Manson just writes the lyrics - He isn't making the music himself. That makes him, what, Britney?

Britney? Dude, you're insane.

Manson writes his lyrics, does most of the production, and sometimes plays a few instruments. How can you compare him to Britney? I'm sick of this attitude that artists are sell-outs if they become successful. If I had the opportunity to make millions of dollars and get millions of fans, I'd do it too. I'd still be making my art, so what's the big deal? Better to be rich and secure than to have to worry if you can pay your rent from the next album.

Does most of the production? By doing what? Saying: "We'll need more electric guitars in this song's chorus"? What do you think his production skills consist of? For crying out loud: this guy credited himself as one of the songwriters in one of the songs for just programming the goddamn 8/8 hi-hat pattern.

I just don't see the difference between Britney and Marilyn Manson as artists - they collaborate to the overall music equally much. But Britney can at least sort of sing, which is the minumun requirement if you are being hired to a musical project just to provide vocals. On these grounds, I'd say Britney is more of a real artist than Marilyn Manson is. And if you want to throw in the success factor, Britney is a way better artist than him.

I've spoken.

lookup some of the acoustic versions Marylin Manson has done of his songs, you'll see a whole different side of him. Mechanical Animals has some great songwriting on it as well.

Anxiety

When I want transgressive socio-political rebellious dark angry music, I go for Diamanda Galas. Her vocal range is amazing, she's an amazing pianist, her anger and dark imagery is overwhelmingly intense, and it doesn't hurt that she was trained by Ornette Coleman. Marilyn Manson looks kind of like a silly pop star compared to someone like her. But then, I've always prefered juice to Kool-Aid.

To sum up some fans' opinions: Bwitney Speaws is better 'cause she's pwettier.

Really, people, at the very least he sings on his damn records. Not like Britney does. The only thing she's "written" is "Dear Diary" and a few dubious co-writing credits (along with 20 other writers) off In The Zone.

Diamanda Galas?! evillol barf

That's some of the worst music I've ever heard, if it can be called music. That bitch must be on more drugs than Manson to be sounding like that. And Manson is prettier too.
