But bear in mind that the message wasn't directed at you. Nevertheless, your attempt to broaden the level of discourse has been duly noted. lol lol

IT'S FACILE TO COMPARE LEGENDS...

Across different industries and mediums. Greta Garbo is no greater a legend than MJ, and vice versa. It's precisely like comparing Tiger Woods to Rocky Marciano. They've set different precedents and made accomplishments which carry varying degrees of influence in their fields of work. The outcomes of which do not always fare well when drawing comparisons. "Garbo helped to reform that system", Voices Carry writes, whilst MJ was a frontrunner in the recognition of black artists on music television. Deciding whose achievements is greater is a matter of some subjectivity.

I wasn't passing decision on whose achievements were greater, I merely stated that Garbo was a much bigger star in her time than MJ is in this era. Simple as that.

Recall Luv4oneanotha's initial statement:

your gonna compare Greta Garbo, Dorris Day, jean arthur to Michael Jackson?
not of the quality of but in star status?

Reread my original post wink

YET EVEN THE PROCLAIMATION BELOW IS QUESTIONABLE

We'll probably have to save the discussion as to how one becomes a star (if not by their accomplishments), and how you reached your conclusion for another thread. I wouldn't want Luv4oneanotha to spend another lonely night on the basketball court.

How I reached my conclusion? By reading up on it. Hollywood used to be much bigger than it is today (primarily because people wanted escapist entertainment in the Depression), and as a moneymaker it dwarfed today's film and music industries. Garbo was the queen of MGM, who advertised her films with simple taglines like "Garbo Talks!" (for her first talkie) or "Garbo Laughs!" (for Ninotchka, her first comedy). She *made* MGM, along with Jean Harlow, Clark Gable and Joan Crawford. These were the stars that made Hollywood a viable operation because before special effects, they were what the studio used as currency to sell and market. Now, not so much. Which explains why we have so many shitty actors today.

Of course they are pretty much forgotten today, because who watches black & white films anyway?

PS: I would argue that Chaplin was probably the biggest star that ever lived, but that's debatable. He was a phenomenon in his time.
