*Janet Jackson* Where does she go from here?

It's still early but it looks like Damita Jo is going to go down as one of her leas sucessful albums in years. While I liked "All For You" that album didn't do the business they had hoped either. You know her label isn't going to sit around and let her release another big budget album that fails to reach number one. Janet fans, where do you think she will go from here?

well, if virgin gave more of a push, this record could have taken off. i do not blame janet for a second. virgin slept on the hype of super bowl and by the time they acted on anything, the backlash had started. i don't know all the private details but when janet was the number one searched topic in googleland they shouldhave pushing that release date forward rather than waiting 2 months to sell it. her back catalogue skyrocketed after superbowl...imagine if her record was also out to purchase! bad, bad moves on virgin's part. they could have called her and said "look, j, you need to get this photo shoot done and we are pushing this cd out now.' they should have left just a little while as a teaser when they saw its lukewarm radio reception. that should have been a clue to release all nite or rnb junkie as the official first single. i love i want you and jalw, but they are not sound choices for a first single. secondly, their promotion of this record...excluding janet's public appearances...has been horrid. at the three virgin stoes i know of, she isn't even in a window display! and her label owns the damn store. uh uh, unacceptable. even p is in the window of the mega store near me. they obviously haven't greased the wheels as much as they need to so hopefully, they will sit and let this record gradually sell. i hope they don't just kill it. with any luck, all nite will pick up sales and word of mouth (good word of mouth, that is lol) will spread.

You saved me a lot of time typing that! I agree completely.

Besides, Janet's contract is up with Virgin after this album (if not, it's the next one). Janet is, and always be, a superstar, and she'll be picked up with a hefty contract from another record company. Virgin has always sucked, and never promoted Janet as she should be promoted. I blame the sales of DJ on them.

and you knwo, thevelvetroper, virgin is going through it right now with finances and staff. although it shouldn't be, it is playing a part in the handling of their artists. i'm curious to see how they handle lenny's new release. they are gonna promote the hell out of it because the two of them are the only artists who make them real money.

nod Yeah, I know, but they wouldn't be in a financial mess right now if they were promoting their artists better to begin with. They'd be selling a lot more albums!

She should do an album about getting older.

And yeah, I'm serious.

It's about the only way she could shock me anymore.

eyepop Wow. I always thought that Virgin promoted Janet brilliantly.
Maybe they dropped the ball this time, but it also seems like her lead singles have always been stronger in the past. I remember "That's The Way Love Goes" being the soundtrack to my senior year in high school (Class of '93, baby). That song was everywhere. I don't think it was because of Virgin. It was just an awesome song. Feels like that element was missing this time around. Just my twocents

i don't think she should be worrying about shocking at all. i think she should be worrying about getting out there and showing people why she is still relevant. by that i don't mean pull a madonna and find the newest trendy producers and sounds. i think she has a lot of things to say about the world...the press, the business and, yes, aging in a superficial world. surely there must be a lot going on in her head that she is either too scared to let out publicly or just doesn't want the whole world in on her business.

i have been thoroughly enjoying damita jo; i like it much more than all for you. while i haven't become bored with it, i must say it is very familiar territory. i don't have a problem with that but, honestly, i haven't listened to it much since musicology grew on me. when i hear the stuff on prince's new disc, though it too is familiar territory, it sounds new to me. damita jo doesn't sound 'new' to me. i love it. to me, it is classic janet jackson. but it just doesn't seem fresh. i don't know exactly how to put it, i guess. i mean, i know there is more to janet than a party and a roll in the hay. when i wake up in the morning, i put damita jo on to get me ready for the day...to wake me up. when i go out to a club, i put damita jo on to get me ready to dance. but it doesn't make me think. it doesn't make me say..."wow, listen to that!" velvet rope did. rythym nation did. to me, damita jo is janet. Part II. that's not bad. but it's not re-invigorating.

yet, with all this said, all for you was a let down of a record and it sold like a mofo thanks to great promotion. damita jo is 5x the record all for you is and it's not getting any play or sales. i really think that is due to poor visibility. it's just not out there and virgin is to blame for that.

Yes, I agree, but Virgin ultimately decides what to put out first, and there were many other better choices for first single than "Just a Little While" and "I Want You".

i could give a fuck if an album sells or not..its all about my personal enjoyment..

so, based on that....Janet needs to find a new muse.....a new topic to sing about....and a quality album...

The bottom line is Janet's next album has to show some artistic development. If it's another "sex" album, it'll be her 5th in a row. OK, they have slight differences, but her output from '93-'04 has been pretty much erotica-focused.

My advice: ditch Jam & Lewis (if ever there was a producer-artist combo that needed time apart, it's J&L & Janet), write some material that does not focus on your orgasm, and get back in the studio!

And, oh yeah, ditch the interludes. Please.

I have an idea that Janet will no resign to Virgin just based on how they "promoted" her last two albums. The advertising for DJ imparticular has been very embrassing. The only hope for the album is that they release "All Nite" as a single very quickly (they way they did after "Got 'Til It's Gone" tanked). Virgin is not on the ball at all. At the very least they should have given "Just A little While" a chance by releasing the video here. It made less than no sense! We are going to have to wait and see what happens with "All Nite". It certaintly can't hurt the album!

Yeah, but I'm betting they're going to slack on "All Nite", too, and you KNOW that song has what it takes to be a huge hit.

Hmm, I thought you were referring to her live show. After last tour, where she looked like a porn star on the cover of her tour book and practically blew a guy onstage, I wonder myself.. where can she go from here? She has already:
1) Sat in lap and kissed a guy onstage (Janet)
2) Done a pole dance and tongued a guy on stage (Velvet Rope)
3) Crawled on top of a guy and stuck her face in his crotch (All For You)
4) ??? Live sex show ??

All of this while the costumes, choreography and song sequence have been the same. While the show in and of itself is great, she needs something fresh! Janet used to be the innovator, now she's trying to outdo those who were trying to outdo her.. make sense? Anyways, PLEASE janet, stop with the sex and show us some talent, creativeness and dancing!! (Tina where are you???)

Whaa...The verdict isn't in on "Damita Jo" just yet but I hardly think that MJ's sales are that good. His "Number Ones" was a near certain cash cow in the same way that the Elvis and Beatles collections where and it just didn't happen in America and I'm not sure if it did that well elsewhere. Also, "Invicible" sold less than AFY (in America, for sure, and they were released the same year) and cost a hell of a lot more. Also, Janet will probably tour and while it might not be sell out dates every time out, I doubt she will loose her shirt (well, maybe she will lose her shirt literally...). MJ hasn't toured in years and why....Hmmm????

Invincible was the most expensive album in history. Janet may have topped Michael in US sales, but Michael fans will be quick to note that "HE SOLD 10 MILLION COPIES WORLDWIDE!!!!!". Which doesn't really help the profit margin when we're talking the most expensive album in history.
