you know, that's kind of funny. things started going that way, with different musicians/styles hooking up and making crazy collaborations and sounds. then the mid nineties came and i don't know what happened. there are few acts that will combine interesting sounds now. too bad since we could really use someone pushing musical boundaries right about now.

That was on NBC late night from '89-91 (and then they did two New Year's specials on ABC in '98 and 99)...David Sanborn and Jools Holland were co- hosts and the house band was Marcus Miller, Hiram Bullock, Omar Hakim and Phillpe Saisse (sometimes George Duke). The idea was to take artists and bands from different styles, cultures and age groups, throw them together and see what would happen...everybody would show up on there: Miles Davis, James Taylor, Sting, Sun Ra, Curtis Mayfield, Sonic Youth, Boz Scaggs, Bootsy Collins, Eric Clapton, George Duke, Ziggy Marley, Take 6, Milton Nascimento, Djavan, NRBQ, John Sebastian, Taj Mahal, Taylor Dane, Pat Metheny, Al Green, Was Not Was, Al Jarreau, Arto Lindsay, Donald Fagen, Patti Austin, Marianne Faithful, Earl Klugh, Carla Bley, Joe Sample, Sreamin Jay Hawkins, Aaron Neville, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Branford Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie, Robert Cray,etc...

They tried to bring it back on ABC, they did two "After New Years" shows (After Dick Clark) and featured guests like D'angelo, Eric Clapton and Cassandra Wilson playing together, Gangstarr, Isaac Hayes, and Jewel ( Meshell N'degeocello was scheduled, but couldn't appear)...

As usual, the shows were critically acclaimed, but had low viewership, and of course they were cancelled both times...but I guess they knew something like that wouldn't last. As co-host Jools Holland said on the first episode..."Set Your vcrs, folks!"

I remember it well. So mad when they stopped running this show!!!

I was just thinking about it when watching a rerun of Dave Chapelle that featured Questlove with guitarist John Mayer...it was done for laughs, but I was just thinking that it would be cool to have an outlet like that again , where differnt styles could come together and jam...their audiences may be too polarized now, but I think the musicians would have a ball...

I taped a couple Pixies performances "Monkey Gone to Heavan" & "Tame" from Night Muisc that I will always treasure.
