Pretty much my sentiment earlier on in this thread. He's written some great stuff, but he's not one of the top 20 of ALL TIME.

Michael is definately in Top 5..PERIOD...He is just perfect when it comes to songwriting-composing...His lyrics are superb..PERIOD ...His story-telling is amazing(BillieJean) and you gotta listen to JAM from dangerous...lyrics belong to him...No need to metion his UNREAL melodies(smooth criminal is one of my favs) I want to remind you that he has written a poem book in 1992(I think) called Dancing The Dream or something like that

JAM
Nation to nation all the world must come 2 gether
Face the problems that we see then
Maybe somehow we can work it out

I asked my neighbor for a favour she said later
What has come of all the people
Have we lost love or what its about?

I just want you to recognize me in the temple
You cant hurt me I found the peace in my life
Go with it go with JAM

GENIOUS cool !!

Dude, I love Madonna but I'm not gonna put her in the top 20 songwriters slot simply because of that. I think your Michael obsession is confusing your judgement. Those lyrics sounded like they were ripped from Janet's RN1814 album two years earlier. And they aren't very profound, just more "we must come together" tripe, which is a common subject for Michael.

And "Smooth Criminal" is IMHO one of the most dated of Michael's tracks.

No offense, but I think it's silly to add Michael Jackson to this list.Yes,he has written some great pop songs, but I don't see him as this amazing lyricist. Most of the songs he has written are "poppy" and fun,but not really profound ("Billie Jean" is a notable exception).

Bullsh*t. I don't think songs like Stranger In Moscow, Who Is It and Will You Be There are "poppy and fun". Even if all of his songs were "poppy and fun" (which they aren't) why would he be excluded? You don't have to write "profound" material to be a great songwriter. The Way You Make Me Feel is "poppy and fun", but is it not a great song? There are people on these lists who have never wrote a "profound" song in there life.

I understand what you're saying and I would agree with you that MJ has written some good songs. However,I just think it's silly to place him on a list with people like Gamble and Huff and Burt Bacharach. Those are people who have written classics ,songs that will live on forever. For all of his success as an entertainer,MJ was never as prolific and creative as those people, when it comes to the art songwriting.I mean, let's be honest, how many songs has he actually written for other artists? And how many of those songs can rightfully be called "classics"? "Muscles" by Diana Ross? "Centipede" by Rebbie Jackson? I don't think so.

Also, many of the songwriters on my list (Rod Temperton,Paul McCartney,Stevie Wonder,Smokey Robinson,Gamble and Huff,Freddie Perrin,Babyface, etc) are actually responsible for some of MJ's most -loved songs...

"Who's Loving You" written by Smokey Robinson
"Rock With You" written by Rod Temperton
"Enjoy Yourself" written by Gamble and Huff
"I Can't Help It" written by Stevie Wonder
"Girlfriend" written by Paul McCartney
"Gone Too Soon" written by Babyface

Don't get me wrong,I know MJ is capable of writing great songs but I just feel he's gotten lazy in recent years. On 'Invincible',there are only about two songs that he wrote all by himself.

Mjs most-loved songs are written solely by himself

dontstop, billie jean, beat it, smooth criminal, bad, way u make me feel, black or white, heal the world, who is it, earth song, they dont care about us, stranger in moscow etc etc...

Those are all masterpieces and legendary classics...after 1000 years people will still be listening to them....I think michael can do everything he wants...he is definately one of the most talented artists of all time...He can do what those people can do in those lists and he can do what nobody else can...PERIOD!!!
(VoicesCarry how the fuck you say i have MJ OBSESSION you dont fucking know me man! I am just telling what the truth is...I think its you guys anti-mj(or extreme Prince) obsession that confuses your judgements...)

It is not me who gave the artist of the century and millenium awards to MJ...they are music experts who awarded him...just to remind you, not the singer or dancer of the millenium...ARTIST of the millenium which includes, singing, writing, performing etc etc...

And listeners have voted MJs billie jean, black or white, beat it in the top 100 best songs ever.he is the only one with 3 songs on the list..does that make sense?..and just to remind you all those songs are completely written by him...Got the point?

BWAHAHAHAHA dude you really think the World Music Awards has any artistic merit? "Music experts"? LMAO lol

BTW, here are five who have made a MUCH bigger contribution to the craft, and to whom Michael owes a LOT:

1. HDH
2. Ashford & Simpson
3. Smokey Robinson
4. Lennon/McCartney
5. STEVIE WONDER

And tell me why I should be jealous of Michael Jackson. Please, get a new line. I thought "y'all jealous of _____" was only used on Ricki Lake.

This is very awkward to decide in my opinion... confuse

I do enjoy listening to The Beatles etc and so to some extent would like to say Lennon/ McCartney or Harrison (I think Harrison was the better of these) but then again much of their lyrical content seemed to be random drug-fueled nonsense (I still enjoy it though!)

Prince is an obvious choice hands down, after years of beautiful and memorable music.

Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy... if you ever get a chance to hear his stuff then please do, if not look up some Divine Comedy lyrics they are beautiful and captivating.

I would also like to include the 80s British SKA band Madness (who I was virtually breast fed!) their songs were never really taken seriously because they were 'mad' but if you look deeper into the lyrics and at their later stuff certainly (such as Yesterdays Men) you will see outstanding musical and lyrical ability.
JaneyPoos used to be it... then they changed what it was. Now what I am isn't it and what is it is strange and frightening to me...

I would say he qualifies biggrin

Only a small percentage of those songs you listed are "Great" Lyrically....Musically there are great tracks but it's about "Quality not Quanity"

In which case how do alot of the ppl get inc in ppl's lists - eg Prince has wrote a shitload of songs but only a handful are true classics and majority are absolute tripe, so how does he qualify? surely it's a personal thing?

and enuff with the MJ bashing it gets sooooo tired
