I don't think it's a matter of preference. It's a matter of looking outside the limitations of what music the mainstream channels let the majority of people to access. The internet is a good tool to find new music, so for example there's the Cold Meat link supplied above if anybody is interested in taking the fascination they have for Marilyn Manson's expression to somewhere a bit deeper.

Who do I think does the same thing better? Foetus, for example.

I think it's going overboard when you are using your status as a rockstar to also promote your embarrassing watercolour doodlings in a genuine art gallery. Plus the guy never really credits any of his bandmates for the creation of the music, altough in reality Manson just writes the lyrics - He isn't making the music himself. That makes him, what, Britney?

Does most of the production? By doing what? Saying: "We'll need more electric guitars in this song's chorus"? What do you think his production skills consist of? For crying out loud: this guy credited himself as one of the songwriters in one of the songs for just programming the goddamn 8/8 hi-hat pattern.

I just don't see the difference between Britney and Marilyn Manson as artists - they collaborate to the overall music equally much. But Britney can at least sort of sing, which is the minumun requirement if you are being hired to a musical project just to provide vocals. On these grounds, I'd say Britney is more of a real artist than Marilyn Manson is. And if you want to throw in the success factor, Britney is a way better artist than him.

Manson writes his lyrics, does most of the production, and sometimes plays a few instruments. How can you compare him to Britney? When I want transgressive socio-political rebellious dark angry music, I go for Diamanda Galas. Her vocal range is amazing, she's an amazing pianist, her anger and dark imagery is overwhelmingly intense, and it doesn't hurt that she was trained by Ornette Coleman. Marilyn Manson looks kind of like a silly pop star compared to someone like her. But then, I've always prefered juice to Kool-Aid.
