People who get nirvana n peeps that dont

It being about 10 years since the death of the lead singer (kurt cobain) of nirvana, i fort i might post something about them.

The thing i hear most peeps say about nirvana is that they r "over-rated" maybe they're just pissed of michael jackson fans (nirvana album knocked dangerous off no1 spot) or peeps that just dont get wot they did, and wot they were about.

I think the best fing about nirvana, is that its rock, and heavy, but also involves melodies, and also involves meaning. The lyrics meant more than pop songs did 2 me (e.g. cant get u out of my head, by kylie, that dint really make me inspired, or think seriously about wot she was saying, it was just a pop song) Nivana meant a lot 2 teens, because they spoke about fings that they might have been goin threw, (not just cos they were... "cool") and also, kurt cobain wasn't sum person, that was consumed by fame, he hated it, and thats eventually wot killed, which proved he did. blunt

Nope. No pissed off Michael fan here. (I've never even heard Michael's "Dangerous" album)

Jesus, Nirvana wasn't the first band to play hard, heavy rock with "melodies". rolleyes
I was into Nirvana, but as I said before, they were just a really good band to me at that time. I "got" Nirvana. I just think now that Kurt's dead, they are given more credit than they probably deserve.

I also thought Nirvana was good enough back in the day, but I'm not as starstruck by them as many are. Maybe it's my bitterness that they opened the door to the horrid grunge movement which became so tried and played out but refused to go away for the longest...

(i'll probably get creamed for saying that, but whatevs smile )

I was thinking about this. It's not a particular reason. Some people just didn't like them as much as others.

Here is my take on Nirvana. Sure there were other grunge bands and tons of punk bands before them... and after... His voice is beautiful and painful at the same time. His melodies make me feel a certain way. Hard to explain. I'm not a punk fan, so I haven't heard it all before. I can see how someone who has heard it all wouldn't think much of Nirvana. Perhaps they were too soft.

So they sold a lot of records. Does that make them sell outs? Nope. It just means they were able to connect with a lot of people. They had something that touched a lot of people. Sure he wasn't the greatest guitar player, but what he wrote and how he played had SO much feeling that it went straight to the heart and soul of a lot of people WITHOUT PROMOTION. Nowadays crap gets popular because it gets rammed down your throat. Please, Nirvana is at least better than Creed, right?

And lots of people thought they were great before he died. Lots of people still listen to the music. In 10 more years are people still gonna say he wasn't relevant? Did they say that about Jim Morrison? Its the same kinda thing. There is something intangible in the intervals that are used in the melodies. I've been listening to Nirvana all week, something I haven't done since he died. It's been really hard for me to play their cds, but I couldn't get rid of them.

remember when designers started making high fashion grunge? there were all these models on the catwalk wearing flannel and stilettos, trying to look sexy and strung out at the same time. That was when "heroin chic" was 'in'. so crazy. i was glad to see that go. there's nothing chic about heroin.

No, it's not that Nirvana were too "soft" compared to punk and hardcore bands. Of course they affected everyone differently, but for me Kurt's voice and Nirvana's music didn't touch me in any special way. I can't explain why, it just didn't.

Of course people say (and I agree) that they were relelvant to the music scene, but for me it's mostly because they are associated with a certain genre that came and went. It's like a time capsule in the history of music: Nirvana were part of that whole "grunge" movement in music, which came at a time when music in the mainstream was completely the opposite of the "Seattle sound". For many people, it was a welcome change from the hair bands and glossy/happy/pop-y R&B that was being played on the radio. They seemd more "real" and I think that's what really attracted people to them. They didn't have that whole "rock star" deal going on and didn't need flashy pyro-technics onstage, etc. So in that way, I'd say they were "relevant" to music. Just not mind-blowing for me.

Anyway, I liked them the most out of all those bands (Sound Garden, STP, Pearl Jam, etc.) and OF COURSE THEY WERE BETTER THAN CREED!!!! lol

Plus, there would be no Creed-type bands if it weren't for Nirvana anyway so, there you go. biggrin

I think they we're the best "grunge" band because they had so much more potential. I was totally into Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, etc. (STP was from San Diego) but Pearl Jam really went downhill for me after the second album. I still like Alice in Chains and Soundgarden is ok. Nirvana is still good to me after all this time. Sure, it reminds me of that time period, and much worse it reminds me of his life and death, but I think the music still stands. I've been listening this week a lot for the first time in a long time and I'm able to listen more to the music, as opposed to feeling depressed or nostalgic.

I remember an interview where Kurt was talking about how the Beatles went from "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" to "Sgt Pepper" and how that was a "massive progression". I can't recall Kurts exact words right now, but I remember having the impression that he really wanted to go beyond grunge. And when I listen to early Police stuff, it sounds just like Nirvana, and they were a 3 piece with the singer writing the bulk of the songs. And look how much Sting has gone beyond his "punk" days. My boyfriend thinks Kurt could have been the next Bob Dylan. So many possibilities. He could have eventually OD'd like Lane from Alice in Chains. Who knows.

I don't think interest was waning much when he died. Heart Shaped Box is STILL a killer track to me and I thoroughly enjoyed the concert I attended a few months before he died.

Nirvana was an amazing band. Kurt cobain had a talent of making awesome songs with just 3 instruments. He knew the concept of "less is more." Simple yet effective is the way to go. I wish Prince would understand this.

Nirvana is a great band, my favorite rock band of all time. However you can't tell me 10 years later that Nevermind is a better album than Dangerous. Dangerous was a myriad of different genres and styles. It was buried under the Nevermind hype. mad

Nirvana will be remembered and deservedyt so for being the band that closed the door of the silly makeup overvblown stage high hair metal era...they opened the awareness that the 80's were basically Spinal Tap in real life. Many other seminal bands as Nirvana were onto that as well ( most of th epunk scene pre and popst hair metal) but it was Nirvana who got all of the shine and broke through completely first. For that, they deserve any accolades they get imo.

They ruined Motley Crues, Guns n Roses, Warrants, Skid Rows, Slaughters, Posins's et. al carrers

Guns N Roses used to be a great band. It's a bit unfair that Nirvana destroyed the momentum they had in the early 90's. They were the biggest rock band in the world until Nirvana came. sad

In my opinion GnR were a great band in 1988..by th e time Nirvana came on the scene to the masses, GnR were already overblown and bloated etc. Nirvana just let folks realize that.

You didn't like "Don't Cry" & "November Rain" from "Use your Illusion"? How were they bloated? confused

Why was it that Nirvana and GnR couldn't coexist? It's like Nirvana just wiped them off the face of the earth once Nevermind hit it big. I remember Kurt dissed Axl big time by refusing to tour with GnR....

One of the most infuential bands of the late 80's and early 90's was the Pixies. Even Kurt Cobain himself said "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was nothing more than a blatant Pixies ripoff.

The Pixies' sound was years ahead of its time. Had they not broken up and came along a few years later who knows how big they could have been. Even now, when you hear bands like The White Stripes and Jet they sound a lot like watered down Pixie music.
