Well, I think what I would define as jazz differs greatly from what you were looking for, so I’ll try and keep these jazz selections RELATIVELY straightforward, and avoid mentioning Prince.

Better by far to embrace the hard truth than a reassuring faith. If we crave some cosmic purpose, then let us find ourselves a worthy goal" - Carl Sagan

10 is just not enough but here goes.
Birth of the Cool - Miles Davis Kind of Blue - Miles Davis Bitches Brew - Miles Davis A Love Supreme - John Coltrane Giant Steps - John Coltrane Maiden Voyage - Herbie Hancock Thrust - Headhunters At Basin Street - Clifford Brown, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins The Johnny Smith Quartet - Johnny Smith The Very Thought of You - Nat King Cole Most of this list consists of material I always heard my dad and his friends playing and talking about (which at the time I didn't really appreciate). Thank goodness the tunes and musicians permanently set up shop in the subconscious section of my head. Thanks for the great thread, Harlepolis. Let me think
Holiday for Soul Dance - Sun Ra & the Astro infinity Arkestra Masterpiece!! John Gilmore and Marshall Allen at their finest! Gorgeous album! Charles Mingus Quintet featuring Max Roach Beautiful album, very dissonant. Eric Dolphy does some interesting stuff on here, 'Hatian Fight Song' is incredible!! Don't know why I'm bothering posting this one, this is a required work in any Jazz fans collection. Title says it all. If anyone ever wanted to know what love sounded like, take a listen. At the Pershing: But Not for Me Ahmad Jamal Nice and simple, just the trio thing going on. Ahmad does a lovely version of 'Poinciana', you can totally here Miles theory of 'Notes and space' on this piece. 'My Goals Beyond' - John Mclaughlin 80% of the music on this album is solo acoustic guitar, very mellow, makes you want to light an incense and think about somethangs. The other 20% are 2 pieces that have a real eastern vibe. The title of these two tracks are 'Peace One' & 'Peace 2' and they are just what the title suggest. Complicated and very textured melodies with a blissful tenor & soprano sax, flute by Dave Liebman. If you didn't know Oscar's the MAN!! The Bridge - Sonny Rollins featuring Jim Hall Sonny Rollin's saxophone and Jim Hall's guitar playing were a perfect pair. Very fine choice!! This may be an odd choice to some, but Bill's playing and phrasing on this album is genius. He's a much slept on artist, but definitely someone to keep an eye on for he's a true innovator. A very intelligent player who always surrounds himself with the genre's elite. His music is straight jazz, it's jazz with a number of other influences. Rip, Rig and Panic/Now Please Dont You Cry, Beautiful Edith - Rahsaan Roland Kirk Now this is Jazz for yo azz!! Not for the faint of heart, very aggressive!! LOVE IT!! I have to think more about the 10th one. My entire collection is in a box it's been in boxes for the last 3 months

2. Jesus Jazz - Jesus Jazz Breaks Loose* 3. Don Byron - Romance With The Unseen 4. John Coltrane - Expression 5. The Grassy Knoll - III 6. Ornette Coleman - Sound Museum 7. Greg Osby - Symbols Of Light (A Solution) 8. Don Cherry - Art Deco 9. Barondown - Tongue In Groove 10. Weather Report - I Sing The Body Electric (*=self-produced - very limited edition! )

Well, I thought on it and one title that drifted into my head was this.
This is a soundtrack to a French New Wave film (of it's time) I haven't seen the movie but the recording is stunnning, IMO, I think it's some of Miles best work. The tracks are extremely short which add to their charm. IF you are a fan of 'Kind of Blue' you'll love this.

Jaco Pastorius - "Jaco Pastorius" Isn't this the same cat who SWV stole the bassline to their hit "Rain"? I don't think they got sued or anything because the man was dead and he wasn't that well-known in the states.

i think i gotta divide mine up between jazz and vocal ...
here's just a sampling of what i dig cause my collection is insane.i'm listing some of the more obscure projects here and there that i like because alot of folks have some of the same things as favorites that i like as well: VOCAL- janis siegel "slow hot wind" janis siegel "i wish you love" ella fitgerald " ella fitzgerald songbook" carmen mcrae "carmen mcrae & friends" nancy wilson - pick an album anita o'day " jazz on a summer's day"(excerpt featuring tea for 2 & sweet georgia brown) manhattan transfer "vocalese" anca parghel " indian princess" diana krall "all for you" eden atwood holly cole "don't smoke in bed" diane schuur- "diane schuur live with the count basie band" cassandra wilson- traveling miles frank sinatra- "live at the sands with count basie and his orchestra" nicole yarling- nicole yarling live (w/joe williams) INSTRUMENTAL- keith jarret - pick any album jaco pastorius- the birthday concert miles davis- tutu miles davis- kind of blue john coltrane- giant steps pat metheny- an imaginary day bela fleck- acoustic planet ahmad jamal- ponciana john pattatucci-another world marcus miller & miles davis- siesta django rheinhardt- the complete django rheinhardt and to these you can add a whole slew of most any recordings from duke ellington, count basie, dizzie gillespie, sonny stitt, buddy rich, stan getz, max roach, chet baker, and anything from the songbooks of cole porter and antonio carlos jobim. oh, and about vocalists- can anybody out there shed some light on jane monheit? i see she's immensely popular, but i'm funny about my jazz singers. when it comes to investing in jazz vocalists, i've never been a one-time buyer, and i don't plan on becoming one now. is monheit worth my $$$ and lifelong devotion to her work...or not really?

Jaco Pastorius - "Jaco Pastorius" Isn't this the same cat who SWV stole the bassline to their hit "Rain"? I don't think they got sued or anything because the man was dead and he wasn't that well-known in the states. I don't know about the song you're referring to, but Jaco was very well-known among Jazz fans. Since his death he became more well known among bass players in general too. Jaco is pretty much to electric bass what Hendrix was to electric guitar. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Holiday for Soul Dance - Sun Ra & the Astro infinity Arkestra Masterpiece!! John Gilmore and Marshall Allen at their finest! Gorgeous album! Ah yes. Great pick My best friend played trumpet with the Arkestra for a spell. I've got a message in to him as to exactly what time period. He's has some amazing stories about the gigs and Sonny in particular. Bill Frisell is someone i've got to check out. I heard him on Mike Stern's "Play" cd. Sounds like he's got his own thing goin' on. [This message was edited Wed Mar 17 19:03:15 2004 by theAudience] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I have that biography on him, but have yet to find the time to crack it open. About Bill Frisell, yeah investigate!! He's had an interesting career. A lot of side projects. one of my true favorites by him is: Where in the world There's some incredible guitar work on here. I wouldn't neccessarily call it jazz though it certainly possess some jazz characteristics. It' one of them things you can't label. Another one of my fav's by him is: Is that you? Awesome!!
